Friday List: What we'd change in the '80s, if we could travel back in time

In "Hot Tub Time Machine," John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and Clark Duke trek back in time to 1986, where they encounter everything we all remember about that special, curling iron-singed time in American culture. Girls in legwarmers. Guys in "Miami Vice" T-shirts. Young people rocking out to Poison and drinking wine coolers with no sense of irony. But they also find something else: They have the ability to alter the past, present and future as they know it. And that brings us to today's Friday list. A few days ago, we pondered what we might do if a hot tub, some alcohol and a high-octane energy drink somehow catapulted us back to the Era of Big Hair. (What? It could happen.) We've come up with some answers, and also included some of your best responses. Join us now as we explore the ways we could conceivably change...

Why Comic-Con should stay in San Diego

Anyone who follows the politics behind San Diego Comic-Con already knows that the totally awesome geek extravaganza may be moving in the near future. Please, Comic-Con officials: won't you let this woman continue to dress up as Deadpool in the city of San Diego? (AP) Officials in both Los Angeles and Anaheim, Calif., are making bids to shift the annual pop culture convention away from the home of the Gaslamp District and to one of their respective cities, where convention space is larger and affordable hotels exist in greater abundance. Between the two, Anaheim is looking like the stronger contender, with more hotels and a larger convention center. To further make that case, the Anaheim/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau recently launched a Facebook fan page to demonstrate how many people are interested in moving Comic-Con to Disneyland Central; so far, more than 201 Facebookers have shown their support. (Also...

'Laverne & Shirley': They're going to do it?

A couple of weeks ago, Liz and I wrote about movie remakes, noting that, in some rare cases, they might not be a bad idea. This is not one of those cases. In case you missed the news, which has been percolating for a while, but was first confirmed last week by TV Guide and reiterated today on ComingSoon.net, producer Garry Marshall plans to move "Laverne & Shirley" to the big screen, courtesy of a screenplay written by one of the 85 million (note: number approximate) people who starred in his "Valentine's Day": Jamie Foxx. Who would play Laverne and Shirley? Two more "Valentine's" vets: Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel. But here, why don't I let Mr. Marshall explain it, courtesy of a quote from that TV Guide story: "It’s a whole different modern day take on how they came up on the streets during difficult times. Laverne would be...

In which Jen and Liz resist the urge to write the entire analysis in Spanish and reflect on the past, present and future of one Richard Alpert, a man who has -- as dead wife Isabella said -- suffered long enough.

Your chance to travel back in time, 'Hot Tub'-style

If you're like most people, you probably began this week by asking an important question: Should I join John Cusack on Friday and travel back in time, with some help from a Jacuzzi tub, excessive alcohol consumption and a high-octane energy drink? The answer, in the form of a full movie review of "Hot Tub Time Machine" from the Post, will come later this week. In the meantime, I can tell you that the movie isn't going to win any Oscars (shocker), but it has some amusing moments and some bit players that will rock your '80s-nostalgia world.(Hello, McFly?) It also inspired me to ponder this philosophical question: If I could go back in time and change something about the '80s, particularly from a pop-culture perspective, what would it be? Before Liz and I answer that question -- and we will, in Friday List form later this week -- we...

Reality Check: 'Dancing with the Stars'

Even Kate Gosselin, Pamela Anderson and more campy ball gowns than you can shake a stick at weren't enough to save Monday evening's "Dancing with the Stars" season premiere from being a two-hour yawn fest. And, predictably, Gosselin and Anderson were saved for the very end of the show, which meant a full hour and forty-five minutes of suffering through watching cheesy soap stars (Aiden Turner), octogenarian astronauts (Buzz Aldrin) and c-list cable stars (Niecy Nash) kill time with a repeating loop of wooden takes on the cha-cha and Viennese waltz. In seasons past, we've gone through each contestant one-by-one to detail their debut performances. But, honestly, reading a tedious post about Olympic figure skater Evan Lysacek's take on the waltz or a description of bachelor Jake Pavelka's schmaltzy bio video clip would probably be second in boredom only to watching the show itself. So we'll confine ourselves to the...

Breaking down the box office: A 'Wimpy' win (of sorts)

To the "Wimpy" go the spoils. (Rick McEwan/Fox) "Alice in Wonderland" may have kept its grip on the No. 1 spot at the box office with more than $34 million in ticket sales, but "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" also had a strong showing in second place. A few quick takeaways from this weekend's box office results. Kinney's "Kid" adaptation scores: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," based on the popular books by Maryland's own Jeff Kinney, brought in $21.8 million, which may not sound like a whole lot in blockbuster movie terms. But the production budget for the kid-comedy was only $15 million, which means it's already earned more than it cost to make. Well-done, wimps. "Bounty" doesn't bring in much of one: "The Bounty Hunter," by contrast, earned almost as many dollars ($21 million) but also boasted a budget of nearly twice that amount ($40 million). Sure, it'll...
