The 'Lost' Five: Points to ponder ahead of 'Recon'
As we prepare for tonight's Sawyer-centric (and consequently, possibly sexy-centric) episode of "Lost" -- title: "Recon" -- a song keeps buzzing through my brain. That song? "Who's Zoomin' Who?" by Aretha Franklin. And no, it's not just because I accidentally flipped by one of those adult contemporary radio stations that delivers "the best mix of the '80s, '90s and today!"
"Who's zoomin' who?" is another way of asking, "Who's got the upper hand?" Or: "Who's conning who?" And I suspect that's a question that will be raised more than once during the seventh episode/eighth hour of the final "Lost" season.
Some things to ponder before 9 p.m. EST rolls around...
What does "Recon" mean? During this week's particularly excellent official "Lost" podcast, Damon Lindelof noted that the title of tonight's episode could be read two ways. The most obvious is as an abbreviation for "reconnaissance," which indicates -- to my feeble brain, anyway -- that we will learn a bit more tonight about Charles Widmore and his efforts to spy on the island. The second interpretation is "re-con," as in a repeat of the con job we saw Sawyer attempt to commit in "Confidence Man," coincidentally, the eighth hour to unfold during season one of "Lost." Might he try to con the same (or a similar) woman? Will it go as planned? Will she even refer to him by using a cheeky nickname?
Speaking of Widmore, what's up with that guy? At the very end of last week's episode, we spotted Penny's daddy, in what looks like the Galaga, clearly near the island and keeping an eye on things. Presumably, he is the "someone coming to the island" previously referred to by Jacob. But what does he want? To overthrow Ben? Hook up with Locke/MIB for Evil Fest '07? (Assuming that's what year it is at this point on the island since, so help me, it's hard to keep track.) Whatever it is, I suspect his motives won't be as deep and dark -- as submarine, if you will -- as we might assume.
Returning faces: I've said we won't do the flagrant spoiler thing here, and I intend to keep that promise. But I will say this: if ABC's press release re: tonight's episode is accurate, we should see at least two familiar faces that we haven't yet spotted this season.
Future eruptions: If I may again refer to the most recent "Lost" podcast, LindeCuse also answered a very good fan question about both Annie (remember that sweet girl that Lil' Ben was friends with in the "Man Behind the Curtain"?) and the volcano also referenced in the same episode. Turns out Annie isn't such a big deal after all -- the show runners said she mainly came into the narrative to demonstrate that Ben craved female connection, which would later illuminate his desire to be with Juliet. But the volcano, which they once called "seismic" during a DVD commentary? That's not off the table, plot-wise. So at some point this season, that thing could blow.
Are Jacob and MIB the same entity? JOpinionated raised this question -- one she credits "Lost" podcasters Jay and Jack for also noting -- in her "Dr. Linus" analysis. I think all three of them are on to something. Is it possible that MIB and Jacob were part of a single whole at some point, but -- like the timeline of our current narrative, and the backstories of our characters -- they were torn asunder and forced to battle each other? You noodle on that one until tonight. Then maybe we can discuss tomorrow morning, when Liz and I reconvene here for the dueling analysis.
