Bret Michaels hospitalized with brain hemorrhage

Michaels in 2008. (AP) People.com is reporting that "Celebrity Apprentice" contestant, reality TV staple and former Poison frontman Bret Michaels was rushed to the ICU Thursday night after experiencing an "excruciating headache." Doctors discovered Michaels had suffered a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding at the base of his brain stem) and he is currently in critical condition: "After several CAT scans, MRIs and an angiogram, [doctors] decided to keep Michaels in the ICU and are running several tests to determine the cause. [It] will be touch and go for the next few days while he is under intense observation," a source told People.com. Michaels, a diabetic, underwent an emergency appendectomy on April 12, but told fans in an April 19 note that his recovery was going well. No word yet as to whether the hemorrhage is related to his previous surgery....

Friday list: The most surprisingly funny SNL hosts

Gabourey Sidibe is scheduled to host "Saturday Night Live" this week. Yes, that Gabourey Sidibe, the Oscar-nominated actress who played the mumbly, perpetually downcast, abused teen in "Precious," a movie now officially listed as a synonym in Roget's Thesaurus for the words "serious" and "depressing." Can Sidibe show us an unexpectedly funny side? Considering that she's actually pretty sunny and giggly in real life, we think it's entirely possible. And we're rooting for her to rock it tomorrow night. Our hope that Sidibe finds her place in the SNL Host Hall of Fame got us thinking about past hosts who surprised with their graceful, hilarious ability to slip into sketch-comedy mode. Which brings us to today's Friday List: our top 10 most surprisingly funny "Saturday Night Live" hosts from the past decade. Which guest hosts surprised you with their comic stylings? Share your picks below......

Fashion statement: Jasmine Burke, gender bender or fashion offender?

Last night, actress Jasmine Burke -- who you may or may not remember from "The Secret Life of Bees" or, umm, "The Secret Life of Bees" -- turned up to an Atlanta event wearing the get-up you see below. Decidedly not the usual garb for aspiring starlets. Is it retro-"Newsie"-esque, Diane Keaton-inspired, "Victor Victoria" chic or just flat out risky. (Getty Images) You tell us......

Paulina Porizkova takes on plastic surgery

A post-surgery Montag on the cover of People. (Courtesy People Magazine) Paulina Porizkova -- former supermodel, "Dancing with the Stars" alumna and rock star wife -- blogs. And, as it turns out, her brain droppings might just be worthy of our attention. As we discussed in last week's Celebritology Live chat, we're nothing if not fascinated and/or perplexed by mainstream standards of beauty and the lengths to which some stars (mostly women) will go to attain what has become a generic aesthetic -- usually blond, busty, tanned and wrinkle-free. Everything from retouching to extreme plastic surgery have become as common as changing hair color and, we said, we're a little worried about the trickledown effect on the rest of us, not to mention young girls who may start to think it's the norm for a perfectly pretty California girl (Heidi Montag) to go under the knife transform herself into...

Is 'Avatar' really eco-friendly?

It's Earth Day. And if you buy into the hype surrounding the DVD debut of "Avatar" -- in stores today, in case you somehow missed one of the splashy television ads promoting that fact -- this is the perfect time to release the biggest multi-dimensional blockbuster ever made, since it focuses on protecting our environment from big, bad corporations who want to exploit it for financial gain. Neytiri and Jake, saving Pandora in "Avatar," even if the DVDs aren't necessarily saving the Earth. (Fox) Director James Cameron, in fact, was on Capitol Hill just last week, talking about how his movie is "a call to action" for those who care about protecting our planet. Or, you know, Pandora's. I have no problem with Cameron using the film as a platform for discussing these issues. Kudos to him for doing it. Here's where I do have a problem, though. Today's release...

Iron Man, Hugh Grant and passive vs. aggressive heroes

I think we can all agree that movie mash-ups are one of the best Internet time sucks ever invented. Within that beloved genre of merged-together trailers, there are many subgenres. You've got your mega-mash-ups that contain spliced-together footage from multiple films (see 40 Inspirational Speeches in Two Minutes); ironic mash-ups, like the classic "Shining" clip that makes a stay at the lodge with Jack Nicholson seem positively delightful; and Batman mash-ups, the forever proliferating category that never ceases to find amusement in making "The Dark Knight" look silly. Well, here's a new subgenre for you: passive vs. aggressive hero mash-ups. In recent days, a video that features Iron Man punching Hugh Grant in the face has gone viral, along with that Iron-Man-punching-Gwyneth-Paltrow-in-the-face clip from The Onion, which we featured in this morning's mix. This suggests two things. One: that Iron Man punching people could easily become a wildly popular sub-sub-genre...

Tweet Beat: Lindsay Lohan attacks Samantha Ronson (again)

For what feels like the umpteenth time, Lindsay Lohan has taken to Twitter to blast ex-girlfriend Samantha Ronson. Is it the beginning of another tweet war -- Lilo has gone there in the past with Ronson and with dad Michael -- or just a minor flare-up? Here's the deal: Lohan, reportedly after having all kinds of fun at the three-day heavily celeb-attended Coachella music festival, is letting her fingers do the talking when it comes to her ex. Last night she accused Ronson of assaulting her with bodily fluids and leaving the scene of the crime with (we assume) Justin Gaston: (Twitter) Ronson, we assume in response to Lohan's accusation, succintly defended herself: (Twitter) Last April, following the couple's breakup, Lohan also used Twitter to accuse Ronson of cheating on her and using drugs. Then in September, she again attacked, saying Ronson had told her family that she (Lindsay) was...

The 'Lost' 5: Questions ahead of 'The Last Recruit'

Okay, things are getting a little sketchy. Jen and I try to maintain a near-constant state of denial about the imminent end of "Lost," but it must be said: after tonight's show, we'll have only three episodes left before the May 23 finale and, tempus fugit, time is a'wasting and there are questions yet to be answered. Big questions.

The Museum of Celebrity Tweets: Surreally fun

It figures that on the day we feature our Q&A with Museum of Modern Tweets proprietress and artist Odessa Begay that the first image in the queue is somewhat NSFW. So consider yourself warned. It's also laugh out loud hilarious, like most of Begay's work. Here's one (SFW) example: (Courtesy Odessa Begay) Many, including your pals here at Celebritology, have tried to wring laughs out of celebrity tweets. The material is rich and there is an ever-renewing supply. But is it of import? The Library of Congress isn't sure, but did announce plans last week to archive Twitter's full backlog of public tweets. But, back to the humor: Where others have failed by either over- or under-emphasizing the ironies inherent in a bunch of rich egomaniacs hunched over their computers showing off their big brains, Begay has triumphed. Her take on celeb tweets is smart, subtle and even -- dare...

Pop culture radar: Green Day, 'Avatar' and more

Neytiri, soon to be seen on DVD. (Fox) Another week, another slew of major events shooting across the pop culture stratosphere. Here are some of the biggies on our radar at the moment. "American Idiot" opens on Broadway: Fifteen years ago, who would have thought the guys who made "Dookie" could inspire a Broadway musical? Yet here it is: Green Day's show -- featuring hits like "21 Guns" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" -- officially debuts tonight in New York. Look for a review tomorrow from the Post's Peter Marks. "Sarah Silverman tells all": The comedian releases her first book, a memoir, today. Title: "The Bedwetter: Stories of Redemption, Courage and Pee." While it's reportedly filled with plenty of Silverman's signature snark, the chick who's [bleep]ing Matt Damon does make a few genuine confessions, like the fact that she used to consume 16 Xanax a day in her teens,...

Box office update: Actually, 'Kick-Ass' wins

We should have known better than to discount Hit-Girl. Final studio figures now indicate that "Kick-Ass" -- not "How to Train Your Dragon" -- was the No. 1 movie in North America this weekend, earning $19.8 million to "Dragon's" $19.6. This is the second weekend in a row that early studio projections have been incorrect, and the top movie has not been accurately determined until more solid figures were released Monday. Executives at Lionsgate and comic-book-movie lovers? Consider this your moment of vindication....

Weekend box office: 'Kick-Ass' does not quite...

After last week's too-close-to-call box office report -- a competition so neck-and-neck that it eventually turned out "Clash of the Titans" captured the top-movie title, not "Date Night," as originally reported -- we've got another tight race on our hands. Based on Sunday studio estimates, it appears "How to Train Your Dragon" claimed the top position at the weekend box office, out-grossing second-place finisher "Kick-Ass" by $200K, give or take. To the box office bullet points: Chloe Moretz as Hit-Girl: Not a box office knock-out. (Lionsgate) First, the obvious question: What the @*#! happened to "Kick-Ass"? After all the fanboy buzz and Hit-Girl hype, the ultra-adrenalized comic-book flick made just $19.8 million and, as stated above, didn't even open in first place. (Assuming, of course, that studio projections hold up.) Part of the problem? Audience limitation. According to Box Office Mojo, 60 percent of the "Kick-Ass" audience was male and,...
