Correspondents' Dinner weekend: The Friday party scene

'Entourage's' Adrian Grenier (in blue) chats at Friday night's Funny or Die party. (Jen Chaney for TWP) On the night before Nerd Prom -- otherwise known as the party-filled Friday evening prior to Saturday's White House Correspondents' Dinner -- every famous person I talk to seems beyond happy to be in Washington, D.C. Don't they know this city, lovely as it is, is filled with wonky, public policy-debating nerds? Actually, for at least some celebrities, that seems to be the appeal. Shortly after making my way into the People/Time magazine party at the St. Regis Hotel, I find myself at the far end of the bar, listening to Steven Weber -- former star of "Wings," current star of "Happy Town" -- talk about how excited he is to be in the presence of so much political and media star power. "There's Andrea Mitchell over there. I'm kvelling," he gushes,...

Celebritology Weekend: Hollywood invades D.C.; Halle Berry single again

Scarlett Johansson, just one of the celebs expected at Saturday night's White House Correspondents Association Dinner. (AP) The three celeb-centric stories we're tracking this weekend… 1. Los Angeles relocates to D.C.: At least it feels that way thanks to tonight's ballyhooed White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, which, for a few shining moments, turns our stuffy city into a place with all the star wattage of Hollywood. So who's chowing down tonight at the Washington Hilton? Here are just a few of the bold-facers slated to be there: Steven Spielberg, Scarlett Johansson, Gabourey Sidibe, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jessica Alba and Simpson, all three Jonas Brothers AND Justin Bieber, Morgan Freeman, Alec Baldwin, John Cusack, J.J. Abrams, Jon Bon Jovi, Betty White, Bradley Cooper and at least one star of "Glee" (Matthew Morrison). Phew. We're already out of breath. And we'll be panting even more later this weekend, as both Celebritology and...

Jim Carrey’s boinging good time

Jim Carrey. (Getty Images) Jim Carrey has been busy lately. In 140 characters or less. The actor and funny man has been yukking it up on Twitter almost non-stop for the past week. But instead of tweeting about the recent end of his relationship with Jenny McCarthy or promoting his latest projects, Carrey has been posting scores of nonsense messages each day – many containing the word “boing.” Why, we don’t know. But he has managed – on at least one occasion – to get #boing into Twitter’s hot “trending topics” list. Here’s a sampling of Carrey’s brain droppings over the past 24 hours: #BOING IS TICKLED PINK BY HIS OWN FINGERS! 8^}7 #BOING WORLD! I'm so grateful 2 u who bounce the big blue ball with me but I've had it with u who need 2 chalk me up as crazy. cont. the vision of these narrow minds...

Friday List: The best prom scenes ever

This weekend, we enter the month of May. And that means it's officially high school prom season, that wonderful time of year when you can't get a table at the restaurant of your choice because a bunch of 17-year-olds wearing ill-fitting tuxes and BCBG dresses have a reservation and you don't. Not coincidentally, this Saturday also marks an event that some media types and politicos refer to as "The Nerd Prom," otherwise known as the White House Correspondents' Dinner, a night to dress up, booze up and suck up to the Washington and Hollywood elite. Best. Prom. Trio. Ever. (Paramount) In honor of this special moment, we could wax nostalgically about our own "magical" prom nights -- Liz, on the outs with her then-boyfriend, spent hers' eating frozen pizza, drinking a 2-liter bottle of Cherry Smash and watching "The Color Purple," while Jen rode in a luxury coach that leaked...

Do any of these horror movie icons still scare you?

The remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," in theaters tonight at midnight, attempts to reinvent one of the most recognizable horror movie evildoers of all time: Freddy Krueger. With a revamped (but still scar-filled) make-up job and Jackie Earle Haley in the role made famous by Robert Englund, Warner Bros. -- which now owns New Line Cinema, the studio once referred to as the House that Freddy Built -- is hoping Krueger will invade the dreams of a whole new generation of horror fans. (Read my review to find out why I think it probably won't.) The original Freddy (Robert Englund) and Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) grab some one-on-one time. (New Line) But is Freddy, even in the Englund carnation, still scary to us? For that matter, do any of the more iconic horror movie villains still deliver the power to petrify? I mean, once you've seen a couple of...

Why we love Sandra Bullock

Despite a 2010 that raised Sandra Bullock to the heights of professional glory, then threatened to drown her in the depths of an icky marital scandal, she's remained true to herself and managed to find her way back into the spotlight on her own terms. And those terms are good. Better than good: the woman is a survivor.

Bill Condon to direct last 'Twilight' movie

"Breaking Dawn" has got its man. Bill Condon -- the Academy Award-winning screenwriter and director of such trophy-worthy fare as "God and Monsters" and "Dreamgirls" -- will direct "Dawn," the final film in the "Twilight" series. Or, perhaps, films -- it's still unclear whether, as rumored, Summit plans to make two "Dawns" or just one. Bill Condon, the man tapped to oversee Bella, Jacob and Edward. (AP) In any case, a press release from Summit says the screenplay -- based, of course, on Stephenie Meyer's swoon-inducing vampire series -- is still being written by Melissa Rosenberg; the film/films is/are slated for a 2011 release, according to imdb info. Today's announcement puts to rest all the rumors about which pedigreed director might be tapped for the project. Names that had been bandied about in the blogosphere included Condon, Sofia Coppola and Gus Van Sant....

Talking 'Lost' with Henry Ian Cusick

It's been a rough few days for "Lost" fans, what with the lack of a new episode and the mounting anticipation/dread of the whole thing coming to an end. Henry Ian Cusick, your Constant and ours. (ABC) But here's something that may pick up your spirits: an extended Q&A with none other than Desmond Hume, aka actor Henry Ian Cusick. He has lots to say -- about why he wasn't in that much discussed cast photo, the mysteriously leaked call sheet and how it felt to officially wrap the show last weekend after four-plus seasons of playing everyone's favorite "brotha" man. (He also confirms, without saying much else, that -- SPOILER!! -- he is indeed in the show's final scene.) Cusick chatted with me via telephone Monday night from Hawaii, where, due to the time difference, he was en route to pick up his three sons from school. ("I've never...

Joss Whedon still not confirmed as 'Avengers' director

Joss Whedon, chatting at Comic-Con 2008. (Photo by Liz Kelly/TWP) When the news broke a couple of weeks ago that Joss Whedon was in final negotiations to direct Marvel's "The Avengers," the fanboy community rejoiced. Within hours of a few Web sites stating that it seemed likely this would happen, it began to be reported as a done deal. Blogs started to refer to the movie as Joss Whedon's "Avengers." IMDB.com updated their "Avengers" page to indicate Whedon -- the man behind "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly" and several revered issues of "Astonishing X-Men" -- was now onboard. And nerd champagne flowed happily throughout the land. But maybe we all need to curb our enthusiasm a little because Whedon still has not been confirmed as "Avengers" director. During a conversation this week with "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau -- who has been tapped to executive produce "Avengers," which...

Pop culture radar: Courtney, 'Elm Street' and more

Courtney Love, not so loved on new CD. (Daniel Jackson) What are some of the big pop culture moments at the top of our minds this week? Glad you asked. Denzel Washington on Broadway: The revival of August Wilson's "Fences," starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, made its official debut last night. Reviews of Washington's performance are somewhat mixed -- the New York Daily News complained that his portrayal of former Negro League ball player Troy, a role once inhabited by James Earl Jones, becomes "more exhausting than exhilarating," but Entertainment Weekly says he is giving a "grand, sell-it-to-the-balcony, crowd-thrilling performance." The show runs through July 11, so you can always take a trip to NYC and find out for yourself.--> Molly Ringwald memoir: Yes, Samantha Baker has written a book, and apparently it's part-memoir, part-advice tome, part-girly guide to life. Russell Crowe: 'I will kill you with my bare hands' (and other tales from the 'Gladiator' set)

Thanks to a new book we are reminded that not only is Russell Crowe a big-time movie star who has another splashy Ridley Scott-directed epic -- "Robin Hood" -- opening in two weeks, but that the actor is also quite possibly a lunatic.

Political statement: Janine Turner, tea partier?

Maybe it would be easier to take Janine Turner and her new Constituting America campaign seriously if almost every page of the campaign's official Web site didn't carry the same photo of the "Friday Night Lights"/"Northern Exposure" actress doing her best Loni Anderson impression.

Weekend box office: 'Dragon' wins. Really.

For the first time in two weeks, there's no photo-finish drama involved in determining which movie was the weekend's No. 1. "How to Train Your Dragon" regained the top spot at the box office with $15 million in the bank; "The Back-Up Plan" did so-so business and landed in second; and apparently no one wanted to go to the movies this weekend. Box office revenue was down 12 percent compared to this time last year, according to the L.A. Times. And with that happy bit of news, here are your box-office bullet points: (DreamWorks) "How to Train Your Dragon" accomplished something rare this weekend; it regained the No. 1 position with that aforementioned $15 million after having dropped out of the coveted top spot four weeks ago. According to Box Office Mojo, a movie has returned to the numero uno position after a few weeks away only four other times...
