Pop culture radar: Courtney, 'Elm Street' and more

By Jen Chaney

Courtney Love, not so loved on new CD. (Daniel Jackson)

What are some of the big pop culture moments at the top of our minds this week? Glad you asked.

Molly Ringwald memoir: Yes, Samantha Baker has written a book, and apparently it's part-memoir, part-advice tome, part-girly guide to life. "Getting the Pretty Back" is on sale today; USA Today's Pop Candy has an excerpt in which Ringwald waxes philosophical about hair color.

Great Tweets from days of yore: Fans of the Web site Historical Tweets will be happy to know that the book -- also called "Historical Tweets" -- is available today, featuring loads of new ,140-character comments that important figures shared on Twitter. (What, you find it hard to believe that Abraham Lincoln Tweeted?)

Hole, reborn" "Nobody's Daughter," Courtney Love's full-length-CD attempt to relaunch Hole, and herself, is out today. Most of the reviews aren't terribly kind, including Joe Heim's assessment right here in the Washington Post: "It's petty and pretentious. It's self-absorbed and self-pitying. It rocks in only the most generic way imaginable." Ouch.

A new "Nightmare": Jackie Earle Haley dons the finger knives once worn so menacingly by Robert Englund in a remake of "Nightmare on Elm Street" that hits theaters this Friday. No reviews have surfaced so our creep-o-meter is unable to register a reading yet. Look for a review in the Post on Friday.

Did anyone catch Robert Englund on a recent "Bones," where he played the creepy long-time janitor at the high school Temperance Brennan attended, whose acquaintance she renews when she returns for her class reunion and to solve a classmate's murder? Englund's character had been one of Brennan's few friends when she was a geek in HS 15+ years earlier.

Now I will have to watch all the "Bones" reruns. In spite of itself, and in spite of the fact that Emily Deschanel is the insufferable Zoe Deschanel's sister, it continues to be be consistently good.

Also Hole, whether reconsistuted or reborn, is the perfect vehicle for Courtney Love. If there is such a thing.

Molly Ringwald isn't a natural red-head. I'm just so confused at the moment, it's as though everything I once knew has now been completely upended.

I'm kind of tempted to see the new "Nightmare" just for Jackie Earle Haley. I'm not even that into horror movies, but he does such an excellent "creepy".

And thank you for the "Historical Tweets" link. I know what I'm doing during downtime today!

I am looking forward to seeing the new Nightmare on Elm Street. Provided they haven't updated it too much. That's just shorthand for "lots of sex and explosions."

Saw Molly Ringwald on Today this morning. She is very down to earth. I too was suprised she was not a natural redhead as it suits her so well.

By the way, don't you mean Courtney Michelle?

Also, just FYI: Celebritology's front-page link is misdirecting again (title is for this post, but the link takes you to yesterday's "Political Statement" article).
