Celebritology 2.0: May 9, 2010 - May 15, 2010

Celebritology Weekend: Graduation glitz; Christy Turlington in D.C.; More trouble for Roman Polanski?

Alec Baldwin greets graduating students at the May 12 New York University commencement. (Getty Images) The three celeb-centric stories you need to know about this weekend: Earlier this week, Alec Baldwin delivered a concise, six-minute commencement address to New York University's Class of 2010 at Yankee Stadium. "One day you will fully understand what your parents did for you," he told the sea of mortar board-wearers, "and you will want to thank them while they can still see you." Baldwin's remarks are merely among the first from many celebrities sharing words of wisdom with young grads this season. Doing the "Oh, the Places You Will Go" routine this weekend alone: Anderson Cooper (Saturday, Tulane University), Katie Couric (Sunday, Case Western Reserve in Cleveland), Rachel Maddow (Sunday, Smith College) and First Lady Michelle Obama (Sunday at D.C.'s own George Washington University). But the speech we are especially eager to hear:...

Profiles in 'Lost' Fandom: Danny Simonzad

Some "Lost" fans have been hardcore, Smoke Monster-obsessives from the minute the show debuted back in 2004. Others didn't fall head-over-Hurley heels until a little later in the game. Danny Simonzad, the man who made "Obsession." (Photo provided by Danny Simonzad) Such is the case for Danny Simonzad, the man responsible for "Obsession," the video entry in ABC's recent "Lost" promo contest that -- at least in my opinion -- did the best job of capturing the bittersweet feelings "Lost" followers feel as they approach the big farewell. Watch it below. (For the record, the winner -- "Convergence," which aired during Wednesday's episode -- also is quite well-done.) I spoke to Danny about he became a "Lost" fan and what inspired him to capture our collective sense of Sawyer mourning in Web video form; read all about it in the Q&A that follows....

Friday List: More candidates for a Betty White-style career revival

Hollywood likes a remake, so it's no surprise that Betty White is the latest thing to -- again -- take the entertainment world by storm. But surely White -- the 88-year-old sensation who utterly burned up the small screen when she hosted "SNL" last weekend -- isn't the only card-carrying AARP member worthy of a later-in-life career revival. In fact, another grassroots Facebook campaign is already underway in support of another comic legend taking the "SNL" stage: Carol Burnett. With that in mind, we started thinking about more elder statesmen -- and women -- of stage and screen who could totally mount successful returns to an entertainment landscape awash in whippersnappers. We've listed five candidates below and ask that you return the favor by sharing more nominees in the comments section. Don Rickles in 2007. (Los Angeles Times) Don Rickles: If it's funny we're after, this king of comedy --...

Battle of the movie trailers: 'Inception' vs. 'Adjustment Bureau'

In what may be the hottest psychological-thriller battle of 2010, new previews for both Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated "Inception" and the Matt Damon drama "The Adjustment Bureau" recently debuted online. And weirdly, though the films are clearly different, their trailers share a number of things in common. In this corner, we have the latest, lengthiest trailer for "Inception" (in theaters July 16), which gives us quick-cut glimpses of a super-stressed-out Leonardo DiCaprio; a possibly doomed romance between DiCaprio and Marion Cotillard; vaguely sci-fi themes about stealing from the subconscious of others; a glass-smashing car crash and an epic building collapse; Joseph Gordon-Levitt doing some pseudo-"Matrix"y stuff with a bunch of levitating guys; and a pervasive paranoid vibe that's been cranked up to 11. And in the other corner, there's "The Adjustment Bureau" (coming Sept. 17), which shows us images of a super-stressed-out Matt Damon; a possibly doomed romance between Damon and...

Owning a piece of 'Lost': Used wheelchairs and beat up paperbacks? Priceless.

A set of Virgin Mary statues. These probably aren't stuffed with baggies of heroin, though. (Image courtesy Profiles in History) Just 10 days away from "Lost's" final episode, zeitgeist surrounding our favorite show has reached fever pitch: cast members are flooding mags, blogs and talk shows with frustratingly cryptic interviews, the "Lost" Twitterverse is tweeting itself to exhaustion and we're just so hopelessly addicted that we're unable to not make a big deal about anything even peripherally "Lost"-related. So I'm sure the similarly "Lost" afflicted will appreciate word that scads of actual items from the show will be up for grabs this summer courtesy of auction house Profiles in History. The date is still TBD, but according to press contact Marc Kruskol bidders -- whether on the Calabasas, Calif. auction floor, online or on the phone -- will have equal opportunity to vie for John Locke's Oceanic 815 boarding...

Fashion statement: Jersey girl Teresa Guidice's red carpet look

(Getty Images) What do Jersey girls do when they aren't busy trashing each other or pushing their elementary-aged daughters on to Fashion Week runways? Well, in the case of Teresa Guidice -- one of the foul-mouthed "Real Housewives of New Jersey" who will forever be known for coining the phrase "prostitution whore" and had already struck a major blow at the image of Garden State girls a full year ahead of "Jersey Shore's" Snooki and J-Woww -- one apparently pens superfluous cookbooks and strikes awkward doll-like red carpet poses. Anyone who watches the Jersey-based edition of the "Housewives" franchise is familiar with Guidice's over-the-top bordello of a home, muscle-bound grunting husband and penchant for dressing her tiny daughters like mini-strumpets. So it should come as no surprise that the Franklin Lakes mom showed up for a NBC Universal event wearing what appears to be a too-small negligee (seriously, the...

Celebrity commencement speakers: Who's talking and who's on our wish list

It's commencement season again. And as always, sprinkled among the distinguished political figures, noted scholars and community leaders who have been called upon to deliver inspiring graduation speeches, we can easily find a fair share of celebrities. Shouldn't this man be asked to speak at a college commencement? (AP) Today, for example, Alec Baldwin delivered the keynote speech during New York University's commencement at Yankee Stadium, where he reportedly stressed the importance of commitment to a crowd of freezing cold, soon-to-be grads. The verdict, at least according to this blog post? His remarks were "cute." Baldwin isn't the first entertainment type to try to impart words of wisdom this graduation season. Actor/activist/recently arrested protestor Danny Glover spoke at Utah State University on Saturday. “Maybe with all our force, with all our conviction, with all our humility — and with all our understanding — we can make something get done," he...

Listen up: Tila Tequila is now a pop star

Tila Tequila is back. And here I'm guessing you didn't even realize she'd been on some kind of self-imposed hiatus. It's okay. Neither did we. The reality show D-lister turned 24-hour-a-day Twitterer now fancies herself a recording artist and yesterday released the three-single EP "Welcome to the Darkside." Tila herself told us about her new pop career herself and previewed the song "Blue Dress" -- in a video she shot herself in her bathroom with her toilet clearly visible in the background -- back in April. (Warning: The video is slightly not safe for work if your workplace has a policy against watching a no-talent wannabe dance around her bathroom while lip-synching along to an iPod): The other two titles are also available for an online listen. First, the upbeat "Get Me Off." Apparently a love song, it starts subtly enough with the lyric "Spread my legs wide open for...

Profiles in 'Lost' Fandom: Stuart Kizcek

Our salute to "Lost" fans continues with a profile of a guy whose loyalty to the island is unquestioned. No words are even required to describe it. I mean, for God's sake, just look at that picture. Stuart Kiczek and Jorge Garcia at Comic-Con 2006. (Photo provided by Stuart Kizcek) But since I like words -- and since I shared a long, thoroughly enjoyable conversation with our profile subject, Stuart Kizcek -- I invite you to get to know this Hurley doppelganger (and one of the most intense "Lost"-ophiles currently roaming the planet) via the Q&A below. Another profile in "Lost" fandom is coming later this week, but I continue to welcome suggestions. So if you know someone whose life will only be complete after they turn their basement into a replica of the Hatch, please drop us a line and let us know....

The 'Lost' 5: Asking questions ahead of 'Across the Sea'

Nerdiest Lostie? Cast your votes in our 'Lost' Superlatives poll. Results will be announced Monday, May 24. And now for something completely different. With just two episodes left before the series finale, "Lost's" crafty writing team is changing the game on us again. At least for one night. In what's been touted as the "mythology episode," we've been led to believe we won't see much, if anything, of our usual cast of characters. Instead, we'll find out more about Jacob and the Man in Black -- what their connection to the island is, how they became sworn enemies and (hopefully) how to bring their story to a satisfying close. Warning: Some light spoilers ahead... 1. Should we even care about Jacob vs. MIB at this point? Obviously the light/dark duo will be key to unraveling some of the island's biggest mysteries, so yes. But, despite some early promise, this...

25 things you maybe didn't want to know about Yoko Ono

From No. 11, re: Yoko's affinity for hats: "In case you might think that maybe I'm trying to hide a bald spot or something, I occasionally take it off to expose my bushy hair." (Getty Images) So remember last year when everyone was simultaneously bored with those "25 Things About Me" lists while also compelled to compile a list of one's own? It would seem Yoko Ono finally got hip to the trend and, over the weekend, published her own list of esoteric Yoko factoids. If I knew nothing else about Yoko Ono except what is included in the list, I would assume the woman is obsessed with her body -- mostly her feet. No fewer than seven items are dedicated to her obsession with her lower extremities -- everything from her philosophy on heels and flats to this explainer about her legs: 4. I have rather short legs...
