Celebritology Weekend: A Star-studded Memorial Day; Twitter tributes to Gary Coleman

Blythe Danner. (AP) The three celeb-centric stories you need to know about this weekend... Blythe Danner isn't a big fan of the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq, but she does support the troops. So when old pal Joe Mantegna asked her to participate in Sunday's National Memorial Day Concert, the Emmy-winning actress says she jumped at the chance. Gary Sinise, Lionel Richie, Brad Paisley, Dennis Haysbert and A.J. Cook will also take part when the show kicks off on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol (and on PBS) on Sunday starting at 8 p.m. ET. While in town, Danner also plans to make a repeat visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which she remembers visiting with late husband Bruce Paltrow and then elementary-aged kids Gwyneth (yes that Gwyneth) and Jake. On the last visit, said Danner, her son got so upset, "We thought he was tired and at...

Gary Coleman dead at 42

From the archives: Candidate With A Diff'rence | Discussion transcript: Gary Coleman dead at 42 Gary Coleman in 2003. (Reuters) Gallery: Gary Coleman through the years Gary Coleman, best known for his portrayal of scrappy adoptee Arnold Jackson on TV's "Diff'rent Strokes" from 1979 - 1986, has died at the age of 42. On Wednesday, Coleman was rushed to a Utah hospital with what his family called a "serious medical problem." Coleman's manager later confirmed to People.com that the actor was on life support after suffering a brain hemorrhage that may have been caused a fall in his Utah home. Coleman had struggled with his health since childhood, undergoing two kidney transplants by the age of 14. Earlier this year, Coleman suffered a seizure on the set of TV's "Insider" and was also hospitalized in January for unspecified reasons. By 1999, the former child star was broke. The same year,...

'Lost': Getting its props in a New York exhibit

During all the "Lost" bedlam over the past week-plus -- the LindeCuse interview, ongoing analysis of "The End" (people are still adding comments and theories!), keeping track of all the "Lost" info on the Web, incessantly weeping -- I never got around to posting my photos from the opening night of the "Lost" exhibit at the Vilcek Foundation in New York. So I'm doing it now because the exhibit -- which contains amazing props, from the Dharma van to the dress Kate wore during that oh-so-special season three brunch with Ben -- remains open to the public until June 5. So if you're in the Big Apple or headed that way for the Memorial Day weekend, you still have time to check out all the items yourself. (In the gallery, you'll also find pics of some of the "Lost" stars who were on-hand for the opening night festivities on May...

Friday List: Hot geeks

The Memorial Day weekend naturally brings it with a tendency to focus on babes, bikinis and beach bodies. But here at Celebritology, we're starting the summer with our minds on guys that, during a time before nerdiness became all the rage, might have gotten sand kicked in their faces. You know the type: The ones who keep their smoldering sexuality hidden behind a pair of black-framed glasses or a pocket protector, who shelter their Superman tendencies beneath a staid, Clark Kent exterior, who totally outshine the hunky quarterback despite their bookish qualities. We're talking hot geeks -- the celebrities or movie/TV characters who, despite projecting a rather goofy (and sometimes carefully cultivated) persona, are nonetheless irresistibly "adorkable." Jen and I have listed our geek crushes below. But the list won't be complete until you add your nominees to the comments section below. And guys, feel free to weigh in...

Gary Coleman in critical condition; Tom Cruise NOT dead

Gary Coleman remains in critical condition in a Utah hospital. No official cause released, but Coleman's brother-in-law told TMZ Coleman injured his head in a fall. Gwyneth Paltrow: She's not just like us!

Gwyneth's 'proper' tub. (Courtesy GOOP.com) It's hard for me to get through an entire quarter without somehow snarking on the insouciant Gwyneth Paltrow. And the thing of it is I don't utterly dislike the woman, no matter how many times I poke fun at her for her faux continentalism or her desire to be the hipster Martha Stewart. The truth of it is, she's not a half-bad actress and sometimes her GOOP-y domestic suggestions actually turn out to be helpful. And then there are days like today when Gwynnie sends out one of her weekly GOOP newsletters that just completely squelches any relatability we -- mere mortals -- may have possibly felt for her. Which is probably still better than the weeks when she commits a major boner and sends out questionable medical advice. Anyhoo... This week, Gwynnie allowed a Nashville interior designer to explain how -- without mentioning...

'Sex and the City' ... and the shopping

A tour bus advertising the movie drives past last night's premiere at New York's Radio City Music Hall. (AFP/Getty Images) It's unclear whether there will be a "Sex and the City 3." But after seeing the second installment in the film series based on the TV chronicles of Carrie Bradshaw and co., I'm hoping not. And so, it seems, is our film critic Ann Hornaday, who gives "SATC 2" a review even more scathing than the New Yorker's dismissal of Carrie's new memoir, one of the many unrealistic plot developments that pop up in the rom-com romp through Abu Dhabi that opens tonight at midnight. (Come on, would The New Yorker really review a book entitled "I Do ... Do I?") But know who is hoping for a third fashion-fueled addition to the franchise? Besides maybe Liza Minnelli, that is? Corporate America. Sure, "Sex and the City" has always...

Fashion Statement: Liza Minnelli's 'Sex and the City 2' premiere look -- Fab or just trashy?

No need to adjust your monitors. Liza Minnelli did indeed show up at last night's New York "Sex and the City 2" premiere wearing a head-to-toe see-through ensemble that appeared to have been constructed from metallic bargain-brand trash bags. To accessorize, Minnelli added a sturdy strapless bra and ankle high boots -- both clearly visible. Minnelli has a small cameo in "SATC 2" and contributed a cougar-ish cover of Beyonce's "Single Ladies" to the movie's soundtrack. (AP) And soon you may be able to rock your own see-through Liza ensemble. The 64-year-old just landed a deal with the Home Shopping Network to market a line of clothing based on her own ticky tacky wardrobe. The aptly-named "Liza Collection" debuts June 30....

Jesse James: 'I lied to everyone.' Viewing public: 'Snore.'

I'm guessing that, unlike me, Sandra Bullock did not stay up to watch Jesse James in his first interview on last night's "Nightline." That's because, also unlike me, Bullock is married (for now) to the guy and the reason he was granted said interview was so he could explain how he done her wrong. Way wrong. And really, who needs to watch their ex prostrate himself in the court of public opinion on national TV? Especially since most of the juicy bits -- in which James explained how it was he came to cheat on Bullock with a series of busty tattooed babes -- were already posted online and shown on Tuesday's "Good Morning America?" Oh, and lest you confuse "Nightline" with a program of the same name over which Ted Koppel once soberly presided with a daily diet of hard-hitting news, this ain't that show. This is the...

Miley Cyrus opts out of college

Miley Cyrus. (AP) Don't look for Miley Cyrus walking the halls of academia this fall when scads of teens become college freshmen. As we shared in this morning's Mix, the 17-year-old graduating senior doesn't plan to go to college right now, though she is busy trying to shed her "Hannah Montana"-fueled Disney image and make the transition into adulthood in other ways. "My sister went to MTSU in Nashville, so I'd probably want to be there with all my friends, but I'm not gonna go to college right now," Cyrus said in a Monday interview with an Atlanta radio station. "I am a firm believer that you can go back at any age you want, because my grandma went back to college at 62 years old." But is deferring an education a good idea -- even if you are a tween sensation with a decent chance of transitioning into...

The 'Lost' madness continues

Finale analysis | Gallery: The end of 'Lost' | 'Lost' Central The series finale of "Lost" aired two days ago. It's over. But because this is "Lost," a series that never wavered in its ability to keep generating unanswered questions, it's not really over. NOTE: If you haven't seen the finale yet, proceed with caution. There will be spoilers ahead. The conversation about what happened during that two-and-a-half hour, weepy trip to church is still going on all over the Internet, not to mention inside our own heads. As Jeff Jensen said of the final moments of the series during part one of his analysis of the finale -- that's right, he's turning his final column into an epic, minus the Target commercials -- "I wonder how long it will be before I can think about any of that without getting choked up? " Jeff, I'm wondering the same thing...

'Lost' Superlatives: Who won cutest couple? You'd be surprised.

More "Lost" coverage: Finale analysis | Gallery: The end of 'Lost' | 'Lost' Central As we pointed out a couple of weeks ago, the "Lost" island -- with its cliques, secret crushes and occasionally long-winded lessons about physics -- has always been a little like high school. So with the series now officially over after a six-year run (hey, some people take six years for high school, too), what better way to honor our favorite characters than by selecting "Lost" superlatives? The votes have now been tallied and all titles have been awarded. As expected, Jack and Kate were voted the island's most-attractive inhabitants, Sawyer was the clear choice for biggest flirt, Hurley the class clown and Ben Linus doubly honored as the biggest drama king and least trustworthy. Review all of the 24 categories here to find out who won. But first, a few surprises: The Man in Black...

Weekend box office: Decent amount of green for 'Shrek'

(DreamWorks/Paramount Pictures) "Shrek Forever After" has a strong weekend, with some caveats. "MacGruber" is met with so-so ticket sales. And what the heck is "Kites," the film that landed at No. 10 in this weekend's box office rundown? Answers, and details, below. (As always, figures are based on studio projections; final numbers release later today.) "Shrek Forever After" earned $71.2 million, not enough to outdo the mammoth opening weekend for "Iron Man 2," but enough to vault it into the top spot and knock Tony Stark into second. On the negative side, that opening marks the least successful ever for a "Shrek" sequel. "MacGruber"! Actually, make that "MacGruber," minus the exclamation point. The big screen version of the SNL sketch landed unimpressively in sixth place, with $4.1 million. I am guessing that means there won't be a sequel -- sorry, Will Forte. The Bollywood musical "Kites" opened in just...

Another 'Lost' theory: No, really, it was purgatory

Updated at 4:56 p.m. ET with a fleshed out version of the Hank theory. --- The "Lost" finale ended less than 12 hours ago and already we're arguing incessantly about what it all meant. In our analysis, Liz and I concluded that only the flash-sideways constituted a purgatory of sorts But our esteemed TV critic Hank Stuever has another view: Let's let him explain: Even dogs, like fan favorite Vincent, can spend time in purgatory. (ABC) It was purgatory, people By Hank Stuever In the fall of 2004, when "Lost" was amassing what turned out to be its incredibly dedicated audience, there were viewers (I was among them) who said: Maybe the island is just purgatory. Maybe everyone on Oceanic 815 is really dead (killed in a plane crash, obviously) and they are trapped somewhere between a dark place and a heavenly afterlife. This theory made the most sense, and...

'Lost 5': Counting down to 'The End'

Upated: 11:59 p.m. ET 'Lost': Instant reaction to the series finale, 'The End' --------------- This is the end, beautiful friends. (ABC) Well, this is it. Or almost it. After six years, fans will gather in front of TVs (and in some cases movie screens) tonight to witness the end of "Lost" in a two-and-a-half hour extended episode that promises to bring closure (and sadness and frustration and joy and every other emotion one wants to attach to a difficult goodbye) to what is, arguably, the most popular cult TV show ever. So popular, in fact, that ABC has basically handed over the entire Sunday night prime-time (and then some) line-up to the show -- sandwiching the finale between a retrospective special and a "Lost"-themed "Jimmy Kimmel Live." Below, a few spoiler-free answers ahead of tonight's extravaganza... 1. When should I start watching? Well, it depends on what kind of experience...
