Gary Coleman, best known for his portrayal of scrappy adoptee Arnold Jackson on TV's "Diff'rent Strokes" from 1979 - 1986, has died at the age of 42.

On Wednesday, Coleman was rushed to a Utah hospital with what his family called a "serious medical problem." Coleman's manager later confirmed to People.com that the actor was on life support after suffering a brain hemorrhage that may have been caused a fall in his Utah home.

Coleman had struggled with his health since childhood, undergoing two kidney transplants by the age of 14. Earlier this year, Coleman suffered a seizure on the set of TV's "Insider" and was also hospitalized in January for unspecified reasons.

By 1999, the former child star was broke. The same year, he pleaded no contest to punching an autograph seeker. In 2007, he was cited for disorderly conduct after he was spotted getting into a "heated discussion" with secret wife Shannon Price. Then Coleman was accused of purposely running over another autograph seeker outside a bowling alley. He eventually ended up paying a $100 fine for disorderly conduct in the case. Price herself was arrested for domestic violence in 2009 after locking Coleman out of the couple's home. Then in 2010 Coleman was arrested on an outstanding warrant and spent the night in a Utah jail.

Still, we'll always remember him as this awesome kid:

And, in this 1985 interview, a 17-year-old Coleman talked about his frustrations with the entertainment industry and said he'd gladly trade his fame for a simple life, which sadly, he never seemed able to attain:
