Owning a(nother) piece of Marilyn Monroe

By Liz Kelly

Another week, another celebrity memorabilia auction. This time around, Marilyn Monroe's iconic bubblegum pink "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" gown is set to hit the auction block and expected to sell for a whopping $150,000-$250,000. Act quickly and you could add it to a growing collection of Monroe artifacts (the actress's chest x-rays were offered for sale in April.)

Lest you scoff at that $150K estimate as laughably inflated, consider that the slinky dress Monroe wore when she sang a sexily-inappropriate "Happy Birthday" to President Kennedy in 1962 sold, in 1999, for $1,267,500. Yes, more than one million dollars. And, despite lacking a tie to a potential illicit presidential affair, the "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" gown is arguably the more famous of the two -- spawning countless copycats including, most famously, Madonna's "Material Girl" video which elevated her Madgeness from the ranks of pop wannabes to an icon on par with Monroe.

If Marilyn isn't really your bag, fear not. Other items being offered in the auction include Johnny Depp's "Edward Scissorhands" hands and "Pirates of the Caribbean" Jack Sparrow jacket, Darth Vader's "Return of the Jedi" light saber, Julie Andrews's "Mary Poppins" carpet bag and a used (whatever that means) genie bottle from "I Dream of Jeannie."

The auction takes place June 10-12 and, fear not, online bids are accepted.

Tangentially: Jazz pianist Hank Jones, who just died this past weekend, was Marilyn's accompanist when she sang "Happy Birthday" to JFK. Jones claimed MM had rehearsed her singing for 8 hours, but was still so terrified that she fortified herself alcoholically before the performance.

I assume the jazz memorabilia (and a few things from Wiaard of Oz) were announced for auction before the people died.

Most disturbing item (the URL says it all), pictured with Woody face even: http://www.profilesinhistory.com/items/hollywood-memorabilia-auction-40/sperm-costume-from-woody-allens-everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-sexbut-were-afraid-to-ask.html

The heck with the dress. It would never fit me anyway. I don't think Capn. Jack's jacket would fit me either - Johnny Depp is probably one of those guys who's teeny tiny in real life. I'm waiting for the Lost memorabilia auction - and nobody'd better bid on that winning lottery ticket, because it's MINE! (Well, it's mine as long as the price doesn't exceed my top bid of $25.)

Among the lots: "Harrison Ford's personal heavily-annotated complete shooting script for 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'."

This, yes, right now, I think my head just asploded from nerdy 80's-era glee. If only I had a spare $50 to $70 K lying around.

Huh? NO ONE is on par with MM.
