Tony Awards go Hollywood; January Jones's car trouble

Denzel Washington in a scene from the Broadway revival of August Wilson's "Fences." (AP) GALLERY: Famous faces among Tony Award nominees Three stories we're tracking this weekend... In an effort to bring more celebrity glamour to Broadway and, perhaps, decent ratings to CBS's broadcast on Sunday night, this weekend's Tony Awards will boast a distinctly Hollywood vibe. Several of this year's nominees -- Denzel Washington, Scarlett Johansson, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones -- already happen to be more familiar from screen than stage. But previously announced performers and presenters like Daniel Radcliffe, Cate Blanchett, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and "Glee" stars Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison also raise the likelihood that the Tonys may emerge as a Twitter trending topic. But perhaps the best reason to watch? To find out whether host Sean Hayes makes any sly commentary about a recent, controversy-generating Newsweek article that said actors like Hayes...

Friday list: 10 peripheral movie and TV characters who deserve starring roles

Could Kirk Lazarus -- just playing himself, not a dude disguised as a dude playing another dude -- handle his own movie? (Paramount Pictures) Hollywood may have discovered a new hobby: shoving peripheral characters into the spotlight. Russell Brand's hard-partying rocker Aldous Snow -- who was a supporting player in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," albeit a funny, impossible-to-ignore one -- got above-the-marquee billing in the recently released "Get Him to the Greek." And confirmation came this week that Paramount really is giving Tom Cruise's tyrannical, profanity-spewing producer from "Tropic Thunder," Les Grossman, his own movie. Here at Celebritology, we're still not convinced that Cruise in a fat suit getting jiggy to Ludacris is enough to justify an entire motion picture. But this pair of cinematic episodes did get us thinking about which minor characters from film and television may deserve to rise to the major leagues. Because it's Friday, we...

Update: Celebrities still eat!

Amy Winehouse enjoys a bracing mouthful of fries. (Image courtesy celebrities-eating.com) I first shared my love of celebrities-eating.com back in 2006. It's a good go-to spot if you're seeking a break from the usual continuum of celebrity photo ops (i.e. red carpets, retouched mag spreads and self-administered Twit pics) or, you know, work. So, imagine my dismay when in July 2008, the site just stopped posting updates. Well, as of June 1, the site is back online and already fielding a robust array of the celebrity-meets-gastronomy-meets-voyeurism pix that made it such a must-click in the first place. Already we've got pix of Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus AND Arnold Schwarzenegger pigging out on ice cream, Amanda Bynes doing battle (and possibly losing) with a fried chicken wing and Carrot Top hand feeding Gene Simmons. As it turns out, celebrities-eating.com isn't the only game in town (see Buzzfeed.com's and Delish.com's collections,...

Five reasons to watch Sunday's Tony Awards

Catherine Zeta-Jones (center) is just one Hollywood regular on the Tony nominee list. (Joan Marcus) BROWSE PHOTOS: TONY AWARD NOMINEES -- FAMOUS FACES Anyone who even casually follows the Broadway scene usually pays attention to the Tony Awards. The trophies, handed out to the best productions to splash on to New York stages during the past year, are important to theater people for a couple of reasons. One: they can sometimes have a positive impact on ticket sales, at least in the short term. (This year, revenues went up around the time nominations were announced, then slumped again.) And more importantly, they are an honor for any budding actor, writer, director, producer or otherwise theater-affiliated person to receive. That said, the average person -- you know, someone who doesn't know all the lyrics from the soundtrack of "Spring Awakening" -- may avoid tuning into the Tonys because he/she assumes...

Rihanna opens up about Chris Brown, Matt Kemp

(Photo courtesy Elle) Rihanna's come a long way since the night, a little over a year ago, when then-boyfriend Chris Brown threatened and physically abused her ahead of the 2009 Grammy Awards. In the July issue of Elle, the pop songstress opens up about the tumultuous end of her relationship Brown ("I just didn't want to feel the pain, the confusion") and her life with new boyfriend Matt Kemp ("It keeps me sane"). A few highlights: On new boyfriend Matt Kemp: "I have a boyfriend. I'm so happy. I feel really comfortable, and it's so easy. I have such a chaotic life, but at the end of the day, that is just my peace. It keeps me sane, really, talking to him and talking to my family." About Chris Brown: "A year ago, I was very confused. Because he was my best friend. All of a sudden, one night...

Songs that should be covered in 'Glee' season two

New Directions, we've got some new tunes for you. (Fox) The first season of "Glee" came to a close last night in the expected fashion: with a barrage of blistering Sue Sylvesterisms, teary tributes to Mr. Schue, the -- SPOILER ALERT -- birth of a baby and, of course, a spirited Journey medley. Now that it's over, we are left with several questions to ponder regarding season two. Will Emma and Will get back together? (Seems likely, based on last night's events.) Will the show be able to sustain its mix of poignance and pop-music frivolity for another full season without getting stale? (Unclear.) And what will they sing next? On that last question, I actually have some ideas. Here's a list of some tunes that could sound pretty great if given the New Directions treatment....

Fashion Statement: Willow Smith, girl gone wild

(AP) I'll surely get taken to task for daring to snark -- no matter how gently -- on a nine-year-old's get-up. But think of me not as a kid basher, but as more of an interventionist whose only aim is to save a misled elementary-aged girl from years of critiques from the Fug girls. First of all, brava to miss Willow Smith -- budding actress and daughter of Hollywood power couple Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith. Even at nine, she's clearly working hard to establish her own persona. And that takes a lot of guts. And experimenting with one's look is better done at age nine, certainly, than at, say, age 32. But there's a fine line between individuality and caricature. And, sadly, the leopard-print get-up Smith wore to Monday's "Karate Kid" premiere (brother Jaden stars) is more cartoonish than couture. From the Zubaz-style pants to the dominatrix-ish boots to...

Lindsay Lohan posts bail on new arrest warrant; Heidi Montag files for legal separation

Lindsay Lohan at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards. (AP) Girl Trouble: A little alcohol-monitoring bracelet shouldn't stop a girl from a post MTV Movie Awards cocktail, should it? Well, if you're Lindsay Lohan the answer is no, and yes. A California judge yesterday issued an arrest warrant and doubled Lohan's bail to $200,000 after the trouble-plagued actress's SCRAM anklet reportedly "indicated the presence of a small amount of alcohol [in Lohan's system] on Sunday night," according to lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley. Lohan herself wasted no time defending herself via Twitter, writing "i did not violate anything .. at all," and "My scram wasn't set off-Its physically impossible considering I've nothing for it to go off-All of these false resports [sic] are absolutely wrong." Bail was posted almost immediately and -- barring more violations -- Lohan is due back in court on July 6. Celebrity Beat: Heidi Montag files for legal...

The same-sex kiss gag: Yeah, it's getting old

Once upon a time, on an MTV that existed eons ago (eons = seven years ago), a kiss between two members of the same gender still carried a wee bit of sexually-charged shock power. I refer, of course, to the lady-on-lady lip-lock between Madonna and Britney Spears -- and also, technically, Christina Aguilera, although everyone seems to forget that part -- at the 2003 Video Music Awards. The brief onstage kiss between Pop Music's Queen and her anointed Princesses sparked tons of media coverage and "Oh my God, did you see that?" conversation. And inadvertently, it paved the way for a same-sex kissing trend that, in 2010, has started to get a little tired. In the years since Madonna made kissy face with Britney, and particularly in recent months, we've seen more celebrity men and women with their mouths enmeshed than I can even begin to remember. Sacha Baron Cohen...

Justin Bieber: The fever that won't quit

The cover of Bieber's latest album, 'My World 2.0.' It sure is. (AP) I'm not sure any other celebrity -- especially one born the year I graduated from college or not named "Elvis" -- has spawned as many Internet memes as 16-year-old wunderkind Justin Bieber. Kanye West came close in the wake of his September 2009 VMA Awards stage siege -- you remember, when he dissed Taylor Swift, defended Beyonce and inspired a flurry of "interrupting Kanye" Web sites and viral vids all riffing on his "I'mma let you finish" speech. Well, sorry Kanye, but that (while fun) was a flash in the pan compared to the range of Bieber-inspired sites that have been propagated in the past six months or so. In fact, over the past several months, Bieber's Web footprint (not to be confused with a webbed footprint) has grown from the typical -- his own early...

'Grease' is the word ... unless it's dirty

The fine people at the Guardian's Film Blog recently stumbled onto something alarming. And when I use the word "alarming," what I actually mean is "alarming to people who still harbor an obsession with Rydell High." Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, still smoking in "Grease." (Paramount) While reviewing the trailer for the "Grease Sing-A-Long" -- an upcoming reissue of the beloved musical that still stars twenty- and thirty-somethings pretending to be high-schoolers, but now comes with lyrics conveniently printed on the screen in case the words to "Summer Nights" are not permanently burned into your brain -- writer Stuart Heritage noticed some striking alterations. For starters, the cigarette that dangles from the mouth of John Travolta in the opening scene, making Danny Zuko seem that much more sexy and dangerous? Gone from the teaser clip. And even more disturbingly, some of the lyrics printed on the screen during snippets of...

Weekend box office: Sorry, Hollywood. Not interested.

"Shrek Forever After," still presiding over a less than solid weekend box office. (DreamWorks/Paramount Pictures) Apparently Americans are not very interested in going to the movies right now. After the weakest Memorial Day holiday at the box office in 17 years, Hollywood had another bummer weekend, with "Shrek Forever After" at No. 1 for the third week in a row and overall revenues down 24 percent compared with this time last year. So what's the deal? Do people have the gall to spend their weekends at the beach, reading books or, God forbid, getting some exercise instead of sitting in a multiplex and gobbling down $85 (cost approximate) bags of popcorn? Or is the real issue that the movies right now totally stink? Let's crunch some numbers and try to figure it out (As always, figures are based on studio projections; final numbers release later today.)...

MTV Movie Awards: The highlights of the lowbrow

Betty White, cracking up the kids while Sandra Bullock receives her Generation Award at the MTV Movie Awards. (Reuters) BROWSE PHOTOS: MTV MOVIE AWARDS If you felt a sudden shift in the Earth's tectonic plates last night at around 9 p.m. Eastern time, do not panic. That movement merely signified the restoration of class and decorum to our culture courtesy of the MTV Movie Awards, an annual ceremony known for its sense of decency and unwavering appreciation for the intelligence of its audience. And by class and decorum, I am of course referring to that close-up shot of Christina Aguilera's crotch with a glowing heart on it, and Sandra Bullock's random girl-on-girl kiss with Scarlett Johansson, and the dropping of at least 177 f-bombs -- and that was just during the portions of the program in which Tom Cruise did his Les Grossman-from-"Tropic Thunder" routine. Collectively, it made Howard...
