Celebritology Weekend -- Updated: Marijuana charges against Paris Hilton dropped

Three celeb-centric stories on our radar this weekend: Paris Hilton, pre-World Cup detainment. (AP) Updated: Since this item was originally posted, charges of marijuana possession against Paris Hilton have been dropped. Her co-accused -- Jennifer Rovero, a former Playboy Playmate who reportedly now works for Hilton as a freelance photographer -- pleaded guilty to the charge. Hilton's publicist told CNN the incident was "a misunderstanding." Paris, detained: Hotel heiress and former reality show star Paris Hilton was taken into custody by South African authorities Friday on suspicion of marijuana possession. According to the Associated Press, Hilton was detained outside Nelson Mandela Bay stadium, after the World Cup match between Brazil and the Netherlands, where police allegedly discovered her with an unspecified amount of pot. She later made a brief appearance in court. It's not the first run-in with the law for Hilton, 29, who served 45 days in jail back...

Friday List: Movies that make me proud to be an American

This Fourth of July weekend, Americans will find many ways to celebrate their freedom Some will do it by sizzling up as much red meat as their double-decker, stainless steel Weber grills will allow. Others will demonstrate their patriotism by going to the movies and watching a vampire and a werewolf fight over the same girl. After all, that's what this country was based on: the notion that all of us are free to obsess over "Twilight: Eclipse" as much as we want. Of course, If the "Twilight" saga doesn't exactly fill you with the urge to burst into "My County 'Tis of Thee," you could always stay home and watch a film that just might make you genuinely proud to be an American. Need some options? That's exactly what this list provides. "Rocky": Americans love to see an underdog rise up. And in this 1976 Oscar winner, Rocky Balboa...

Andrew Garfield is the new Spider-Man

Columbia Pictures has issued a press release confirming that Andrew Garfield will play Peter Parker in the next Spider-Man movie. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the new Peter Parker. (TWC/2007) "Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012," the studio says in a statement. "The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt." Garfield, 27, has landed the role in the wake of much speculation about who would slide into the Spidey suit most recently worn by Tobey Maguire. Other names that were floated as possibilities included young stars like Josh Hutcherson ("Bridge to Terabithia," "The Kids Are all Right"), Jamie Bell, Frank Dillane (Tom Riddle from "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince") and Aaron Johnson of "Kick-Ass" fame. “Though his name may be new to many,...

How 'Lost' should have ended: the video parody

I am posting the following video for four reasons: 1. I've been meaning to post it for a couple of days and keep forgetting or getting sidetracked. And it needs to be seen by those who haven't already caught it. 2. It made me laugh out loud. And more than once. 3. Some people -- or at least one person from today's Celebritology discussion -- are still suffering from "Lost" withdrawal and need a fix. 4. All right, fine. I'm still suffering from "Lost" withdrawal, and part of getting my fix is to share this with all of you. Enjoy....

Recasting 'Clue'

Posted by Paul Williams In this summer of '80s revivalism (see "Kid, Karate" and "Team, A"), there's an overlooked gem from that decade that is getting its own makeover soon. "Clue." That's right, "Clue," possibly the best movie ever based on a board game, featuring a cameo by a Go-Go. I'm not suggesting "Clue" is high art, but it is fun, silly and rewatchable. Its cast of comic actors toss off rapid-fire jokes with superb, professional timing. Director Gore Verbinski ("The Ring," "Pirates of the Caribbean") has signed on for a remake, set to come out in 2011. Knowing how Hollywood works, I'll be glad if it doesn't end up being a "Saw"-style slasher film, starring Miley Cyrus as Col. Mustard. Still, I'd like to offer some casting suggestions, Mr. Verbinski. Wadsworth Original: Tim Curry New: Michael Sheen Why: Because Michael Sheen was born to play a comedic British butler...

More speculation about the alleged Tiger Woods divorce settlement

Posted by Jen Chaney As noted briefly in this morning's mix, People magazine -- along with a flurry of other news outlets -- are jumping on reports that Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren are closer to reaching a divorce settlement. Tiger Woods, circa 2008. (Getty Images) Citing anonymous sources, People has now stated that Nordegren is likely to get around $700 million in the divorce, money that allegedly will buy her silence and prevent her from sharing more details about Woods's extra-marital affairs. Thus far, no one has gone on the record to confirm any of this. A call to Jeffrey Fisher, the Florida attorney reportedly representing Woods in the case, has not yet been returned. His assistant said he is currently in a meeting but would be back in touch with the Post. More if/when any new (and legitimate) information emerges... Poll: Is Tiger Woods divorce settlement paying too...

Talking with director M. Night Shyamalan about 'Last Airbender,' race and more

M. Night Shyamalan has built his directing career on thrillers, ones that often involve supernatural elements and almost always promise a twist ending. But with "The Last Airbender" -- his big-screen adaptation of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," the Nickelodeon animated series with a devoted fan following -- he's finally going in a direction that doesn't involve seeing dead people or crop-circle signs. M. Night Shyamalan at "The Last Airbender" premiere in New York. (Peter Kramer/AP) Shyamalan took a few minutes to speak via telephone about the film, which opens in theaters today, how he deals with box office performance pressure and, of course, the controversy over whether enough Asian actors have been cast in a film based on a series with an anime aesthetic. And yes, Shyamalan has some very strong opinions on that last subject....

'Twilight: Eclipse' sets midnight record

A big midnight kiss for "Twilight: Eclipse." (Summit Entertainment) While we were all busy discussing "Twilight'" fandom, news broke about just how strong the "Twilight" fan base is. "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" has set a new box office record for midnight showings, earning $30 million from its Tuesday witching (vamping?) hour shows alone. Allow me to put that into perspective: that's more than "Knight and Day" made in its first five days in theaters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, projections suggest the film will bring in $150 million between now and the end of the Fourth of July. I'm betting on even more. And speaking of major summer blockbusters, feel free to submit your toughest summer movie trivia questions as part of this video chat I'll do tomorrow at 3 ET, following the Celebritology discussion. Questions can be related to "Twilight" or any movie (or movies) from summers past....

Is the media fair to fans of the 'Twilight' franchise?

During Jimmy Kimmel's special devoted to "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," which aired on ABC last week, the host invited audience members to ask questions of the cast members assembled on stage. A teenage girl who looked as sweet and innocent as a newborn Care Bear immediately stepped up to the mic and kicked off the Q&A by asking Taylor Lautner, very politely but with no apparent sense of shame, if he could take off his shirt so the crowd could verify that his abs are real. The request prompted a chorus of whoops and screams from the Twi-hards around her. For the record, Lautner did not comply with the request. In fact, he looked a little embarassed. And, perhaps, so were many of the "Twilight" fans watching at home. There's a reason the mainstream media often depicts the admirers of the "Twilight" franchise as a bunch of screaming teen and...

Why we should cut Jason Bateman some iPhone-gate slack

Apparently no one likes a guy who cuts in line, even if he is the only responsible member of the Bluth family. Jason Bateman, with wife Amanda at a movie premiere last year, blissfully unaware of the iPhone scandal in his future. (AP) As we noted in Friday's morning mix, Jason Bateman was plucked from a line outside an L.A. Apple store last week so he could get quick and easy access to the new iPhone. The incident sparked plenty of iOutrage online, enough that Bateman was forced to defend himself on Twitter. "There wasn't one boo. Not one hiss. The Apple guy brought me in away from the paparazzi. Period. I was content in line. I wish I'd stayed," he posted Sunday to his Twitter account. Then Us Magazine cited several witnesses who said, actually, people were booing at Bateman, and that the paparazzi amounted to one photographer, max....

Putting Alex Meraz of 'Twilight: Eclipse' to the wolf test

Alex Meraz, arriving at the L.A. premiere of "Twilight: Eclipse." (AP) To win the role of Paul, a prominent, toned and (naturally) often shirtless member of Jacob's wolf pack in "The Twilight Saga," actor Alex Meraz had to audition. But surprisingly, the good people at Summit Entertainment never bothered to give the guy a werewolf quiz. During a recent telephone conversation with Meraz -- part of the promotional and media blitz behind "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," a movie that, frankly, probably doesn't need much promotion at this point -- I convinced Meraz to answer a series of five werewolf-related questions, some trivia and some personal. It quickly became apparent that I should have considered his age before crafting these questions. Nevertheless, Meraz, 25, was a very good sport about the whole thing. (For the record, he also was very complimentary of his uber-in-demand co-stars, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and...

Can 'The Office' go on without Steve Carell?

Steve Carell has previously implied that he plans to depart "The Office" at the end of next season. Now the man who plays America's most lovable donkey of a boss has confirmed that he will indeed leave Michael Scott behind in 2011. And that means no more of this: Or this: Or this: Can "The Office" continue without the nimrod who stands at its dysfunctional paper company center? According to The Wrap, NBC has a plan in place in the event of Carell's departure, a plan that, of course, they have not shared. (Sounds a little Michael Scott-esque, doesn't it?) Reps also note that "The Office" is an ensemble show so the loss of a single character, albeit a significant one, isn't necessarily a death knell. Ensemble though it may be, one assumes that with no Michael, another character might step up and play a more central role. Who might...

Vince Neil has been arrested on DUI suspicion

Updated: The Associated Press also has reported the arrest, and confirms that Neil is being held on $2,000 bond. Vince Neil, under arrest. (AP/Las Vegas Police Dept.) MTV.com and numerous other Web sites are reporting that Vince Neil, former front man for quintessential '80s metal band Motley Crue, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Neil was stopped last night around 11 p.m. in Las Vegas and is currently being held at the Clark County jail; a hearing is supposed to take place later this afternoon. The "Home Sweet Home" singer was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years' probation after an accident in the mid-'80s in which Neil also was driving under the influence. That crash caused the death of Neil's passenger, Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley. Neil just released a solo CD and plans to publish a memoir this fall. The title...

Based on his BET Awards turn, is it time to forgive Chris Brown?

As noted in this morning's mix, Chris Brown paid moving tribute to Michael Jackson during last night's BET Awards while simultaneously making his most convincing attempt yet at a comeback. After impressively channeling Jackson with a series of Brown's well-known, MJ-inspired dance moves -- including a fluid moonwalk and a few requisite crotch grabs -- Brown capped off his performance by breaking down while attempting to sing the emotionally loaded "Man in the Mirror." (Watch the performance in the video below if you missed it on live TV.) Were his tears brought on by lingering sadness over the loss of Jackson, one of his idols? A public acknowledgment that -- a year after pleading guilty to felony assault for hitting ex-girlfriend Rihanna -- he too has looked at the man in the mirror and asked him to change his ways? Or a bit of well-timed and well-played acting designed to...

Weekend box office: 'Toy Story 3' wins, but what does poor 'Knight and Day' performance tell us about Tom Cruise?

Tom Cruise, not on-target in "Knight and Day." (20th Century Fox) "Toy Story 3" easily stays at the top of the box office. Adam Sandler remains a draw, even in a movie with only nine percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. And a poor revenue reception is bad news for "Knight and Day," but is Tom Cruise really to blame? An attempt to answer that question -- along with analysis of other pressing weekend box office matters -- follows. "Toy Story 3" added another $59 million to its North American total, bringing its domestic tally to more than $226 million. Translation: the third "Toy Story" has already outgrossed the first and is on track to become the most financially successful movie in the franchise. Adam Sandler is perceived in the industry as a box office sure thing. And while his "Grown Ups" didn't knock it out of the park...
