Angelina Jolie coming to Comic-Con ... we think

Angelina Jolie, soon-to-be seen (maybe) in San Diego. (Reuters) As we previously reported, Angelina Jolie is in Washington, D.C. today, participating in the press junket for her upcoming stunt-filled spy film, "Salt." While participating in round table interviews this morning, I asked her the question currently plaguing celebrity-watching nerds everywhere: are she and Brad Pitt coming to Comic-Con or not? "Brad's working," she said. Then she paused. "That's all I can tell you." I followed up: "But you won't say whether you will be there?" "I won't say whether I will be there, but I know he's working," she said. So Brad Pitt, who would have joined Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Jonah Hill on the July 24 panel for "MegaMind," is out. But Jolie -- who could do one last push for "Salt" that same Thurday, which happens to be the day before the movie opens -- seems...

Celebritology Weekend: Angelina Jolie in D.C.; "Today" show welcomes gay weddings

Three celeb-centric stories on our radar this weekend: Three celeb-centric stories on our radar this weekend: Angelina Jolie, from the red carpet to D.C. (AP) A dash of “Salt” star power: If you’re out and about in downtown D.C. today, there is a chance -- read: a chance -- you might see Angelina Jolie. The female half of Brangelina is in Washington this weekend as part of a press tour for her upcoming (and coincidentally well-timed) Russian spy action flick, “Salt.” Also in town and hitting the interview circuit? Co-stars Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor, as well as director Phillip Noyce. The “Salt” junket is stopping in our fair city because, as film-production trackers will recall, portions of the movie were shot last year on the streets of D.C. “Today” welcomes gay weddings, incites online chatter: Comments on the “Today” show Web site quickly escalated from simmer to boil in...

Audio of Mel Gibson's racist rant has leaked online

Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva, before the legal battle. (AP) Another update: As Deadline Hollywood reported late yesterday, Mel Gibson's agency, WME Entertainment, has dropped him as a client. -- Updated July 10 at 5:09 EST It was only a matter of time. Radar Online has posted the audio recording of Mel Gibson yelling at ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. In the recording, as rumors had suggested, he harshly criticizes her for dressing provocatively, uses racial slurs and spews numerous profanities. Obviously there is a lack of context around this particular conversation. But even so, this certainly does not look, or sound, good for Gibson. People magazine reports that Gibson plans to prove to detectives that Grigorieva is attempting to extort money from him, using the release of the recording as a threat. All of this comes in the wake of confirmation that the L.A. Sheriff's Office is investigating Gibson on...

Comic-Con 2010: 'Big Bang Theory,' 'Green Hornet' and more highlights of day two schedule

Chloe Moretz, destined to get punchy at Comic-Con. (Lionsgate) The schedule for the second day of Comic-Con -- Friday, July 23 -- was released earlier today. Here's a partial list of the key panels and presentations of interest to the Celebritology universe. "Hawaii Five-O" -- 10:15 a.m. in Room 6BCF: The actor formerly known as Jin on "Lost," Daniel Dae Kim, will appear alongside executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Peter M. Lenkov, among others, to provide a sneak peek at the reimagined cops-in-paradise series, premiering this fall on CBS. "The Big Bang Theory" -- 12:45 p.m. in Ballroom 20: Think a show about nerds attracts the attention of the Comic-Con crowd? Don't answer -- that was purely a rhetorical question. Wil Wheaton moderates this discussion with sitcom stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki and others. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" -- 2:15 p.m. in Hall H: Guillermo...

Friday list: Eight TV shows that are not on DVD and should be

Sometimes it seems like every television show that's ever aired, even for a nanosecond, has been released in a prettily packaged DVD box set. "Voyagers," starring a moppy-haired Meeno Peluce? Available. The detectives-on-a-boat series "Riptide"? Also available. "Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp"? Yes, thankfully, the crime-solving monkeys who wear real-people clothes and "talk" can be viewed in disc form. Oh, and also via totally groovy YouTube clips: Yet somehow, a few gems -- genuinely excellent TV shows or ones that boast an exceptionally high retro-nostalgia value -- still have not made their way to either Amazon.com or the shelves of Best Buy. Here are eight that seem particularly worthy of release. Weigh in on the selections and nominate a few of your own in the comments section....

The problem with Pixar

"Toy Story 3": Haven't we seen this one before? (Pixar) Posted by Paul Williams Pixar stinks. No, not the studio's movies. Judged individually, their animated tales are smart, funny, creative, well-paced and brilliantly animated. In fact, the Pixar wizards are so good they've managed to obscure the fact they've been making the same movie over and over again for the last 15 years. To reveal this secret, I have obtained a copy of the top-secret Pixar plot generator. Read over the description below and select one of the choices in each pair of parentheses to help the "Toy Story 3" creators craft their next masterpiece. A sensitive, misunderstood young (poodle, airplane, No. 2 Pencil, Goldman Sachs exec) has just never felt like he fits in. He -- this is Pixar, so I assure you, the main character is a *he* -- is sure there must be more to life...

Comic-Con 2010: Some highlights of day one programming

Liz Lemon? Oh, she'll totally be at Comic-Con. (NBC) The complete, mind-bogglingly massive schedule for the official first day of Comic-Con -- Thursday, July 22 -- has been released. And as always, there are more comic and pop culture-related events than a person can possibly consume in a single day, especially if they're trudging through the San Diego Convention Center while carrying the extra weight of a storm trooper uniform. I've done the cursory scan of what's happening and have broken out the 10 Thursday panels that may be of most interest to the Celebritology audience, whether you're going to the Con or just trying to keep track of what's happening. "Megamind" -- 10 a.m. in Hall H: The DreamWorks team will do the dog and pony show for their upcoming animated film, complete with voice talent Tina Fey, Will Ferrell and Jonah Hill in tow. Missing, according to...

The final season of 'Lost' earns 12 Emmy Award nominations

Man of science, man of faith, men of Emmy nominations. (ABC) For "Lost" fans expecting their dearly departed series to be snubbed by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, this morning's Emmy Award nominations were a pleasant surprise. The Dharma drama earned 12 nominations for its final season, the most the show has amassed since 2005, when it also scored a dozen nods and won six trophies, including one for Best Drama, for its groundbreaking first season. Even the most loyal "Lost" fan -- and by that I mean me -- will tell you that while season six certainly delivered some emotional high points (please see the weep-athon that was the finale), it was hardly the strongest season in the show's run. It's fair to assume the Academy members may have doled out these nominations as a way to pay tribute to the overall achievement of the island...

Lindsay Lohan: The aftermath of the sentence

Lindsay Lohan sentenced | PHOTO GALLERY (Reuters) Now that a 90-day jail sentence has been issued and some courtroom tears have been shed and some Web photos of profanely painted fingernails have been posted, the question is: what's next for Lindsay Lohan? Can she do her time in prison while still working toward a career comeback? Opinions are mixed. An item from Fox News claims that Lohan's career is now in a "tailspin," and follows up on that headline with a nail-in-the-coffin quote from Hollywood publicist Michael Levine, former PR man for Michael Jackson: "Her employability over the next five years is impossible. She can’t get insurance, she is too much of [a] liability. Even if her best friend wanted to make a movie with her, it just couldn’t happen.” A producer for "One Night With You," one of the projects Lohan has signed on to tackle, tells Entertainment...

Five entertainment-related Internet hoaxes that duped the public

The "Back to the Future"/July 5, 2010 Internet hoax may be behind us. But America, this much is clear: we will be fooled again. Some other bit of clever Photoshoppery or genuine-looking viral video or seemingly credible celebrity rumor will pop up in our e-mail inboxes and, albeit briefly, convince us that what we see/read is true. Lady Gaga: just one victim of the dreaded online hoax. (Reuters) How do I know? For starters, because the Internet, digital seductress that she is, likes to mess with our minds. But more importantly, because it's happened so many times before. As evidence of that fact, here's a rundown of five of the best celebrity and/or pop culture-related Internet hoaxes that successfully faked out at least some members of the Web-using public. Undoubtedly there are more great examples that fit in this category, so feel free to add your own selection for best...

Updated: Lindsay Lohan sentenced to 90 days in jail

Lindsay Lohan, heading to jail in two weeks' time. (Jae C. Hong/AP) Lindsay Lohan has just been ordered to report to jail for 90 days, and to pursue treatment for alcohol and drug abuse following her time in prison. Judge Marsha Revel has ruled that the actress did indeed violate her probation. She must report to prison on July 20. Lohan began sobbing as Revel issued her ruling. Before the ruling came down, Lohan spoke to the court and insisted she had "done the best [she] could." But that obviously wasn't enough for Revel, who felt that Lohan has consistently failed to meet the obligations of her probation, which stems from charges of cocaine possession, driving under the influence and reckless driving, to which she pleaded guilty in 2007. A spokeswoman for Michael Lohan just appeared outside the courthouse in Beverly Hills and urged Lohan to immediately report to...

The Lindsay Lohan hearing so far

Lindsay Lohan, doing her court duty (Jae C. Hong/AP) Update: Lindsay Lohan has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for violating her probation. ------- The court in the Lindsay Lohan probation hearing is in recess until 1:30 PST. Here are the bullet points you need to know (okay, need is a strong word here) based on what's happened so far. As E! notes, Judge Marsha Revel indicated she will not use the SCRAM bracelet alarm incident at the MTV Movie Awards as a basis for deciding whether Lohan violated the terms of her probation. The prosecution, however, has begun calling witnesses, including staff members from Right On, the alcohol education program in which Lohan has been participating. Cheryl Marshall, co-owner of the program, bore the brunt of "what do we know about how many classes Lindsay ditched, and when did we know it" questioning. She was still on...

Lindsay Lohan in court: How we got here

Lindsay Lohan, arriving for her day in court. (Jae C. Hong/AP) As promised, Lindsay Lohan is back in a Beverly Hills courtroom today for a hearing that will determine whether or not the "Mean Girls" star has violated the terms of her probation and, perhaps, will be forced to report to prison. If you've just joined the coverage via Twitter or the various celebrity Web sites offering streaming video, you may be scratching your head over all the discussion about SCRAM bracelets and alcohol consumption. In order to make it easier to understand this obviously pressing legal matter, here's a quick primer on the Lindsay Lohan case and how we got here. Consider these today's LiLo Cliffs Notes. And feel free to consult this even more detailed timeline that traces the sad Lohan events of early 2007. On May 26, 2007, Lindsay Lohan is arrested on charges of driving...

'Back to the Future': paying proper tribute to the flux capacitor

Over the holiday weekend, lots of people gave online shout-outs to "Back to the Future," the Michael J. Fox time travel adventure that became the top-grossing movie of 1985. The only problem? Many of them were honoring the 88 mile-per-hour blockbuster for the wrong reason. The whole mess started when the movie Web site Total Film Tweeted from their account that July 5 was "Future Day," a date allegedly significant to Marty McFly aficionados because Doc Brown sets the time circuits in the plutonium-powered DeLorean to go there. The Tweet got re-Tweeted. Everyone from Elizabeth Banks to Colin Hanks got excited. "Back to the Future" started to trend on Twitter and Google. And then the whole episode came crashing down like George McFly's initial attempts to hit on Lorraine. Because the thing is: that date never gets entered into the time circuits. The Total Film staffers -- who now admit...

Weekend box office: 'Eclipse' wins and 'Airbender' surprises

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" was the weekend's No. 1 movie, a ranking that even casual box office trackers easily predicted; despite its high suck factor, "The Last Airbender" had a solid weekend; and "Toy Story 3" is inching closer to overtaking "Iron Man 2's" overall gross. Now, the breakdown on your July Fourth weekend box office. Don't look so upset, "Eclipse" cast. Your movie's No. 1 at the box office. (Summit) In its first five days of release since its Wednesday opening, "Eclipse" has earned $161 million, enough to make it the third highest grossing Independence Day weekend release ever, according to Box Office Mojo, but not quite as much as the $164.7 million "New Moon" made in its first five days. As the BBC points out, the total for "Eclipse" also falls shy of the $173 million forecast by Summit, the studio behind the franchise. But considering that the...
