Harrison Ford makes his debut appearance at Comic-Con

Updated with video below Harrison Ford made his debut appearance at Comic-Con during a presentation about his 2011 film "Cowboys & Aliens." Yes, that Harrison Ford. The guy in this video clip. The place went absolutely nuts when he walked out on stage, escorted by cops. (A nod to his role in "Cowboys & Aliens"? A joke about the stabbing that occurred earlier? People were too busy snapping digital photos to care.) Director Jon Favreau showed some clips from the film, which has a Western-meets-Spielberg feel and also stars Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell, who also were onstage. The movie comes out next July. And it might take until then for some people in the Convention Center to calm down after seeing Ford in the flesh for the first time at Comic-Con, perhaps the most exciting moment of the event so far. New: Video of Ford's Comic-Con appearance...

Comic-Con 2010: A stabbing at the San Diego Convention Center

A stabbing occurred today at Comic-Con in Hall H, the largest auditorium in the San Diego Convention Center. KTLA got confirmation from San Diego police that there were two victims. Here in the Hall, there was a commotion in the back of the room, and someone yelled out that medical attention was needed. The sessions were put on hold for an hour while police and medics responded to the scene. Fellow Comic-Con attendees, as well as Twitterers inside the Hall, reported that the stabbing was the result of an argument over a seat. At least one person was reportedly removed on a stretcher. I'll share more information as I learn it....

Comic-Con 2010: 'Super 8' amps up the viral marketing

What the heck is a Rocket Poppeteer? It's got something to do with J.J. Abrams's upcoming movie "Super 8," his homage to/collaboration with Steven Spielberg that hasn't even begun production yet. But, in keeping with the traditions of Abrams's production company, Bad Robot, the viral buzz is already being generated. While standing in line for the "Green Lantern" Comic-Con panel -- a panel that hundreds of people, including me, were shut out of -- an ice cream truck dubbed the Super Speed Flier and featuring the words "Rocket Poppeteers" on the side was spotted cruising the streets of San Diego. "Join the Race for Outer Space!" it urged. A Web site for the Rocket Poppeteers leads to the Rocket Poppeteers Twitter page. And as the Super 8 News notes, it all ties back in to "Super 8" ... somehow. I wasn't able to get close enough to snap a...

Comic-Con 2010: 'Harry Potter,' Mark Ruffalo (maybe) and more on day three

The Green Hornet ladies, on the Exhibit Hall floor at Comic-Con. (AP) | PHOTO GALLERY Day three of Comic-Con is here, bringing with it several potentially big-deal moments from the high-profile movie previews in Hall H. Here's a quick look-ahead. "The Green Lantern" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"" The Warner Bros. panel in Hall H at 11:45 a.m. PST brings a more in-depth look at "The Green Lantern" -- one that presumably extends beyond that much-debated image of Ryan Reynolds's costume. (And one that, presumably, won't have people walking out of Hall H in droves as they did during yesterday's "Green Hornet" panel.) Also on the agenda: more footage from "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows" that...

File photo of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor (AP) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes Update: Zsa Zsa Gabor remains in critical condition after receiving a blood transfusion, according to husband. Zsa Zsa Gabor is in critical condition after possibly suffering a stroke during hip replacement surgery, according to her publicist. The 93-year-old actress was reported to have been recovering from hip replacement surgery, Monday. Gabor's husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, told publicist John Blanchette his wife "was bleeding excessively," according to the Associated Press. "She hasn't talked. She wasn't speaking. They were worried about that. They took her off morphine to see if that might be the cause," Blanchette said. "She's vacant." Gabor's daughter denies her mother is on "death watch," according to Reuters. We will update you as more information becomes available....

Friday List: Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt and other awesome movie spies

Jolie's Evelyn Salt is the latest awesome movie spy In honor of the opening of Angelina Jolie’s “Salt,” we bring you this guest post from intern Lizzie Horne who writes about the best movie spies she wishes she could be. Posted by Lizzie Horne If there’s one thing Hollywood can do right, it’s make a suspenseful and action-packed spy movie. Audiences have been eating up fictional espionage since Woody Allen’s low-budget spy film “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” – and, to be honest, that movie was terrible. Needless to say, the producers of Tinseltown have done it again with “Salt,” your average thriller about a kick-butt government agent who’s accused of being a Russian spy and fights everyone in her way. It’s true, Evelyn Salt is the real deal. But she's just the latest in a long lineage of spies that have dominated the box office. Ethan Hunt from “Mission:...

What happened to Chauncey and other 'Mad Men' questions that need answers

Some of those 'Mad Men' (AMC) | Winner of 'Mad Men' Look Contest Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes Like millions of other television viewers out there, I am ridiculously excited for the season premiere of AMC's "Mad Men" this Sunday. As a lover of all things sixties and scandalous, I have been hooked since the first episode. But unfortunately my impending joy is tainted by anxiety that not even a gimlet can ease. (SEASON ONE, TWO AND THREE SPOILERS BELOW) Season three was, how to put this, a tad disappointing. With the biggest mystery -- Who is Don Draper? -- solved -- He's some guy named Dick Whitman -- the show didn't really have a lot of places to go. I was bored by the British invasion of Puttnam, Powell and Lowe (even though some poor Brit did lose his foot to a John Deere) and by Betty's father's...

Comic-Con 2010: 'Walking Dead,' 'Green Hornet' and more on day two agenda

After just one day of Comic-Con, semi-exhaustion has already set in. Even a taco from the "Machete" cast and crew, while delicious, wasn't capable of completely reviving me. But it's time to wake up and man up because there is plenty to do on day two of the Con. Here are five items on my Friday Comic-Con agenda; again, I will do my best to Tweet live from the daytime activities, as well as some evening parties, at twitter.com/celebritology; you also can read along right here in the blog, where posts that contain said feeds will go live later today. "The Walking Dead" The upcoming AMC series about members of a Kentucky town dealing with a zombie-filled, post-apocalyptic existence looks intriguing, especially since Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Mist") is writing, directing and executive-producing the TV adaptation of the comic. I have a feeling there will be much...

Comic-Con 2010: Bringing the Force to the Comic-Con party scene

Photo by Jen Chaney This may be nit-picking. But this is San Diego Comic-Con, and that's sometimes what happens here. Nerds find nits and they pick. And that's why, technically, one must point out that the Princess Leias in their held-hostage-by-Jabba-the-Hutt bikinis technically had no business parading around the GPhoria Strikes Back party, thrown by G4 and Lucasfilm Thursday night at San Diego's Hard Rock Hotel. The Leia bikini ensemble is totally "Return of the Jedi," not "Empire Strikes Back," the "Star Wars" film that the soiree was meant to honor on this, its 30th anniversary. Of course, no one seemed to mind this minor flub. In fact, everyone in the room -- from Seth Green to Joss Whedon -- seemed perfectly delighted to have some drinks and get their photos snapped with the Leias, storm troopers and wampas that lurked about, bringing a decidedly Episode V-ish vibe to...

Guillermo del Toro to take on 'Haunted Mansion'

Guillermo del Toro made a surprise appearance at the end of the "Tron: Legacy" panel at Comic-Con to announce his next project: "The Haunted Mansion." Del Toro will direct the film for Disney, which is based on the amusement park ride. But del Toro told the Comic-Con crowd that his version of the movie will be frightening. Don't take the kids, he warned. Because they will get scared. He also made it clear that this film will be nothing like the family-oriented Eddie Murphy version released in 2003. "We are not returning Eddie Murphy's call," he said, to a chorus of approving whoops from the crowd. We want this to be "the haunted house movie that a generation remembers and loves," he added. What do you think? Excited to see what the director of "Pan's Labyrinth" can do with a Disney ride? Or should he have stuck with his...

After divorce and cancer, Christina Applegate is engaged and expecting

Christina Applegate accepts the "Do Something Kick Ass for Survival" award at the 2010 VH1 Do Something Awards in Los Angeles (Chris Pizzello - AP) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes Breathe easy, dear reader, this isn't about Lindsay Lohan. "Samantha Who?" star Christina Applegate and her musician fiance are expecting their first child, according to her rep. Now isn't that a nice change of pace? The past few years haven’t been easy for Applegate. She divorced “That Thing You Do” actor Jonathan Schaech in 2007 and was diagnosed with breast cancer the next year. She underwent a double mastectomy. But! In April of this year she got engaged to Lenoble -- the person she credits with helping her overcome cancer -- and, if you're still not sure what this post is about, is now expecting a baby. All's well that ends well, right? While I don't want to condone...

Comic-Con 2010: 'Tron,' 'Scott Pilgrim' and more on day one agenda

The first night of Comic-Con -- dubbed preview night because it gives pass holders the chance to check out a few movie and TV screenings and walk the Exhibit Hall floor before the pop culture proceedings really get underway on Thursday -- was filled with the usual bumping, jostling and unabashed spending sprees. The lines for the Hasbro, Entertainment Earth, Warner Bros. and, yes, even the Hallmark booths stretched out in lengthy but orderly fashion as attendees waited to buy everything from "Star Wars" Christmas ornaments to Venture Bros. action figures. Complimentary items -- vampire mints -- and other rare opportunities -- the chance to have a picture of yourself "zombified" at "The Walking Dead" booth -- were also coveted by the crowd, which only occasionally got surly. ("I am really tired of having to bob and weave like a freak," spat one guy into his cell phone as...

As Steve Harvey begins filming 'Family Feud,' we look at past hosts

The new host of "Family Feud," Steve Harvey (Jonathan Exley) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes We surveyed 100 people; top answers are on the board. Name a person who has hosted the CBS game show “Family Feud.” Survey says -- *BING* -- Steve Harvey! Yes, Harvey, best known for his sitcom “The Steve Harvey Show,” will join the long list of comedians who have hosted "Family Feud" when he begins filming this week. He will take over the game show from “Seinfeld” alum John O’Hurley, who after four years, decided to step down as host. Harvey's first episode premieres in September. "Family Feud," on the air since 1976, was first hosted by game show veteran Richard Dawson. Since then, the show has been canceled and revived, canceled and revived again, with hosting duties changing hands several times. A Q&A with Angelina Jolie, cast and crew of 'Salt'

Angelina Jolie, in "Salt" mode. (Sony) When Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor and the director and producer of "Salt" recently gathered in Washington, D.C., they went through the usual movie press junket routine. And part of that traditional junket routine involves the ritual known as the press roundtable, a time when the talent rotates between various rooms filled with reporters, each stepping on each other's sentences in an effort to jam as many important questions as possible into a 15 to 20-minute period. (Example of an important question: "So what was it like working with Angelina Jolie?") We at Celebritology could treat you to a full, thoroughly illuminating transcript of the nearly two-hour round table sessions regarding the suspected spy thriller. But in an effort to save you some time, this post just hits the Q&A highlights. Want to know whether Jolie really intends to give up acting,...

Comic-Con 2010: Vote for the panels you want covered

The Comic-Con nominations are in. Now it's time for the poll. This week I asked readers which Comic-Con panels they would most like to see covered during my ongoing reporting from the San Diego pop culture extravaganza. After perusing your nominations, I've come up with a list of the most-requested panels and presentations (yes, "Smallville" is included) and have compiled them in a poll. Now it's your turn to vote for the ones you most want me to attend. As previously promised, I'll do my best to hit one or two of the panels that the majority of Celebritology readers have demanded. The winning panels will be announced in a post on Thursday morning, before the Comic-Con chaos goes into full-tilt mode. So start voting now. Write-in votes via comments on this post will be considered. poll by twiigs.com Check out some video highlights from Comic-Con 2009 below:...

Lindsay Lohan's daddy drama and other controversial celebrity parent-child relationships

Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes Lindsay and Michael Lohan pose for photogs in 2002. (Getty Images) | PHOTO GALLERY Well, it’s official: Lindsay Lohan is behind bars. Hopefully, this marks the end of the dramatic saga that has pushed the troubled starlet into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. When times are tough, some of us can count on our parents for their support and their discretion. Unfortunately, Lindsay can’t say the same for her press-friendly father, Michael Lohan. On Tuesday, Lindsay tweeted, “I don't want Michael Lohan Sr. anywhere near me, no matter where I am. I am in a great place and he only brings negativity in my world.” In order to respect her wishes, Papa Lohan showed up at the courthouse and shouted, “We love you Lindsay” at his daughter. His lawyer then told the press, "Michael spent the morning praying for his daughter. He doesn't...

Lindsay Lohan goes to jail

Lindsay Lohan goes to jail. | PHOTO GALLERY (AP) Lindsay Lohan has turned herself in at a Beverly Hills court house to serve her prison sentence. She remained calm throughout the proceedings, where she was ordered to begin her sentence of 90 days for violating probation on previous DUI and related convictions. TMZ and other media outlets have reported she will likely serve no more than 23 days. Judge Marsha Revel prohibited photography of Lohan being taken into custody. She will serve her sentence at the Lynwood Correctional Facility, the same lock-up where Paris Hilton did time in 2007 for a probation violation. Famed attorney Robert Shapiro stepped down as Lohan's lawyer yesterday for unknown reasons. Shawn Chapman Holley returned as Lohan's lawyer after resigning from the case earlier this month....

Comic-Con 2010: The stars coming to San Diego

Comic-Con is hardly a glittery affair. During the four-day span when pop culture creators from film, television, comics and other realms assume command of the San Diego Convention Center, the scene looks decidedly more cargo-shorts-and-Wookie-T-shirts than high glamour. Nevertheless, there will be plenty of celebrities in attendance, as always, when Comic-Con 2010 officially blasts into dizzyingly high gear on Thursday. Who will be there? Here's a partial rundown of the famous names expected, broken down into various categories of Comic-Con Celebrityhood. The Ultra A-Lister: In recent years, there's usually one major star who pops in semi-expectedly at Comic-Con and almost immediately departs, thereby elevating him or herself into the Ultra A-Lister category. In 2008, it was Hugh Jackman, who made an unannounced appearance to promote "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Last year, Johnny Depp came, captivated and left. This year the not-so-big celebrity surprise looks to be the Comic-Con debut of...

'Jersey Shore' cast members go on strike, despite their lack of real jobs

Life's a beach ... unless you go on strike. (MTV) Several "Jersey Shore" cast members have reportedly gone on strike, refusing to shoot scenes for the Snooki Show's third season. Why? According to E! Online and other media outlets, they don't get paid enough. Here's how it breaks down. The alleged strikers -- JWoww, Ronni, Sammy, Pauly D and Vinny -- each pull in $10,000 per episode, writes USA Today. So at the end of a nine-episode season, each of them walks away with $90,000. That's $90K for partying, drinking heavily, hooking up, wearing tacky clothes and sporting glaringly hideous spray-on tans. There are plenty of people in New Jersey who do all of these things and receive no compensation whatsoever. If you ask me, those are the individuals who should be threatening a revolt of some sort. I mean, we're living in challenging economic times. Plenty of very...

Comic-Con 2010: Letting the readers make the call

San Diego Comic-Con is about many things. Grown men and women dressed in the equivalent of adult Underoos. Hollywood studios trying to convince the masses that they should buy tickets to a movie that doesn't come out until fourth-quarter 2011. Standing in line for 45 minutes to earn the privilege of buying a soft pretzel. But above all else, Comic-Con is about the fans. And that's why I'm turning to you for guidance. A reader asked during a recent Celebritology chat if I was taking requests as far as what panels to cover. And that sparked an idea. So I am asking you, Celebritology Nation: which Comic-Con panels would you most like me to attend? To help with those selections, I refer you to my highlights from day one, day two and days three and four, as well as the incredibly lengthy, complete Comic-Con schedule. Would you like me...

Weekend box office: 'Inception' is No. 1

"Inception" gets a very positive box office reception. (Warner Bros.) Christopher Nolan's "Inception" blew our minds and became the No. 1 movie in North America over the weekend, proving that sometimes intellectually challenging films actually translate into dollar signs. The film opened with $60.4 million, making it the strongest opening weekend in Leonardo DiCaprio's career so far. More details on the weekend box office, including a less than stellar showing for "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," can be found below. "Inception's" $60.4 million exceeded expectations. According to the New York Times, audience-tracking surveys indicated the film would bring in close to $40 million. But with all the positive reviews and the buzz factor behind it, that $60 mil shouldn't be all that shocking. In addition to the new financial benchmark that number sets for Leonardo DiCaprio, "Inception" also stands as the second biggest opening of Christopher Nolan's career, right behind "The...
