Comic-Con 2010: 'Super 8' amps up the viral marketing

By Jen Chaney
Comic-Con

What the heck is a Rocket Poppeteer? It's got something to do with J.J. Abrams's upcoming movie "Super 8," his homage to/collaboration with Steven Spielberg that hasn't even begun production yet. But, in keeping with the traditions of Abrams's production company, Bad Robot, the viral buzz is already being generated.

While standing in line for the "Green Lantern" Comic-Con panel -- a panel that hundreds of people, including me, were shut out of -- an ice cream truck dubbed the Super Speed Flier and featuring the words "Rocket Poppeteers" on the side was spotted cruising the streets of San Diego. "Join the Race for Outer Space!" it urged.

A Web site for the Rocket Poppeteers leads to the Rocket Poppeteers Twitter page. And as the Super 8 News notes, it all ties back in to "Super 8" ... somehow.

I wasn't able to get close enough to snap a decent photo, but I'll keep my eyes open for more vague, virally marketed frozen treats from the Rocket Poppeteers truck.

Saw the truck yesterday at Comic Con. Awesome! I got a T-Shirt. The Ice Cream Guy and a Blonde chick were handing them out. The Ice Cream guy was funny. We watched hime for about 5 minutes and the cops made him move. He was calling people "Gal" or "Fella". Loved it!! Everyone was trying to find them - glad we did.
