Comic-Con 2010: 'Tron,' 'Scott Pilgrim' and more on day one agenda

By Jen Chaney
Comic-Con

The first night of Comic-Con -- dubbed preview night because it gives pass holders the chance to check out a few movie and TV screenings and walk the Exhibit Hall floor before the pop culture proceedings really get underway on Thursday -- was filled with the usual bumping, jostling and unabashed spending sprees. The lines for the Hasbro, Entertainment Earth, Warner Bros. and, yes, even the Hallmark booths stretched out in lengthy but orderly fashion as attendees waited to buy everything from "Star Wars" Christmas ornaments to Venture Bros. action figures. Complimentary items -- vampire mints -- and other rare opportunities -- the chance to have a picture of yourself "zombified" at "The Walking Dead" booth -- were also coveted by the crowd, which only occasionally got surly. ("I am really tired of having to bob and weave like a freak," spat one guy into his cell phone as he raced past me, finally finding a small clearing of open Exhibit Hall space that allowed him to roam free.)

Yes, I spotted some Batmans and Kick-Asses and women dressed in Princess Leia bikinis. But I spotted just as many parents with kids and babies.

If last night felt too overwhelming, just wait until today, kids. And speaking of today, here are five (though hardly the only) highlights on the Thursday Comic-Con agenda; barring any technical mishaps, I will be Tweeting live from the daytime activities, as well as some evening parties, at twitter.com/celebritology; you also can read along right here in the blog, where posts that contain said feeds will go live later today.

"Megamind"

The first big panel of the day in Hall H focuses on this animated adventure in which the bad guy (voice of Will Ferrell) attempts to get his mojo back after killing his superheroic nemesis (Brad Pitt). Pitt reportedly will not be in attendance to promote the movie, which comes out in November, but Ferrell, Tina Fey and Jonah Hill will.

"Tron: Legacy"

For the third consecutive year, a "Tron" update will be presented to the Comic-Con faithful. Key cast members -- Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen, Bruce Boxleitner -- and "Tron" directors new (Joe Kosinski) and old (Steven Lisberger) will be on-hand along with, hopefully, some substantial footage.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"

Michael Cera battles a flotilla of his new girlfriend's ex-beaus in this Edgar Wright movie based on the comic. Cera, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzman, Mae Whitman, director Edgar Wright and several others are on board to showcase the boyfriend-butt-kicking goods.

Tacos with the cast of "Machete"

Would you eat a taco prepared by Michelle Rodriguez? Well, I just might at the "Machete" taco truck. This is not a joke: cast members will serve up tacos this evening, followed by a cocktail party, in a parking lot adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center.

The GPhoria Strikes Back party: This G4 event celebrates the 30th anniversary of "The Empire Strikes Back," complete with recreated scenes from the movie inside the Hard Rock Hotel. Reportedly attending: Nathan Filion, Lance Reddick, Seth Green and "Lost" executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, among others.

And last but not least, here's the story on your panel votes.

Based on highly scientific polling conducted in an attempt to have readers choose which panels I should cover, here are the top five ones I'll try to hit on your behalf over the next few days:

The "Smallville" panel

The J.J. Abrams/Joss Whedon panel

The "Big Bang Theory" panel

The "True Blood" panel

The "Green Lantern" panel

Michelle Rodriguez tacos? First thought: sign me up! Second thought: Jen, are you absolutely sure you want to go there with this crowd? (See the Lizard Lexicon for the reference.) I'd also be interested in hearing about Robert Rodriguez and his famous puerco pibil, if it makes an appearance at the food truck this evening.

I'm guessing LiLo is going to miss out on the Machete Taco truck action.

northgs, you make it very difficult for me not to say what I would like to do with Michelle Rodreguez' taco.

In addition, I hope Jen will give my lurve to the smart, sexy Tina Fey.

Dorkus, the comment on Lilo and the taco blew right past me.

reddragon, LiLo is also in Machete, but her jail sentence will most likely keep her from serving tacos with Michelle Rodriguez.

Get in line, reddragon. ;)
