From Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston to Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz: Recent celeb pairings that surprised us most

The news this morning that Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston have gotten engaged -- information that, based on this Us Magazine interview, may be as much of a surprise to Sarah Palin as it is to the rest of us -- is the latest in a rash of celebrity weddings and engagements, some more out of the blue than others.

So which pairing, so far, has been the most unexpected? Was it the low-key nuptials between Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green? Or the ones between Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz? Zoe Saldana's recently announced engagement to longtime boyfriend Keith Britton? Let's take a look at some of the pairings and determine their individual "surprise" factors. Beats talking about Mel Gibson's tirades yet again, doesn't it?

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green: Less than two weeks after announcing they had gotten re-engaged, the "Transformers" siren and the actor formerly known as David Silver took a Hawaiian vacation and tied the knot.

Surprise factor: High. These two had been engaged once before and called it off last year. So when they said marriage plans were back on, few expected them to be on, like, immediately.

Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher: The country crooner and her hockey star beau got married last weekend in a wedding that reportedly featured their dog in a Swarovski-encrusted pink tuxedo. They announced their engagement last December, but shielded their weddings plans from the press until the last possible minute.

Surprise factor: Moderate to high, only because they kept their plans such a secret.

John Krasinski and Emily Blunt: These two also got married last weekend, following a 10-month-plus engagement.

Surprise factor: Moderate. They had been engaged for a while, and some celebrity gossip sits, like Popsugar, suggested ahead of time that the nuptials were imminent.

Carlos Santana and Cindy Blackman: The guitar legend surprised his drummer girlfriend on July 9 by popping the question in the middle of a gig in Illinois. Fortunately, she said yes.

Surprise factor: High, for two reasons: didn't really expect Santana to propose onstage. Also, haven't though that much about Santana in general since "Smooth."

Carmelo Anthony and Lala Vasquez: The basketball star and reality show host solidified their union -- again, last weekend -- after an engagement that began back in 2004.

Surprise factor: Low to moderate. That's a heck of a long engagement, but since the wedding will factor into a reality show about the couple, the wedding wasn't such a major surprise.

Zoe Saldana and Keith Britton: Last month the notoriously private "Star Trek" star confirmed her engagement to longtime boyfriend Keith Britton.

Surprise factor: High. Please see previously noted "notoriously private" reference, although those close to Saldana, like her "Avatar" co-star Michelle Rodriguez, didn't seem that shocked.

Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz: As just confirmed by their reps, the Oscar-winning pair wed earlier this month in a small ceremony in the Bahamas. The couple had long played coy about whether they were engaged or even a couple, even though some media outlets reported their engagement last year. But they managed to keep their wedding well-hidden until they were ready to share.

Surprise factor: High. Few knew the two had already tied the knot until today's news broke. Pretty big coup on their part.

Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston: The daughter of Sarah Palin and the Playgirl-posing father of her child split last years. Despite all of Johnston's public bad-mouthing of the Palin family, the two seem intent on making it work, even if momma Sarah still doesn't know yet.

Surprise factor: Off the charts. What? I mean, seriously, WHAT??

Now you decide:

Bristol and Levi are NOT celebrities, except in their own (and the Palin family's) minds. If they even have minds, that is. I wish Brile would just disappear, along with Heincer.

There goes my flat screen.

Gotta reload the coffee cup.

BTW, Elias, happy belated birthday.

Well, sorry sas! You ever tried saranwrap on your screen?

There is an explanation for this. I got in the "Way Back" machine to visit my old friend, Eli. But old Elias is, how can I say?, getting old and set the "Way Back" to 2025 instead of 1825.

Hey, did I mention saranwrap for the CRT,errr LCD?

I have a feeling Bristol Palin is pregnant again...I had never seen the photo of the baby before - he's adorable. But this is a marriage destined to fail.

Please don't kick me off the island when I say this: when I heard that Bristol and Levi were engaged, the romantic in me went "awwww". I hope this means that they can pull away from the Palin talons and that it's not some tawdry publicity stunt. Just think - it could be a rewrite of a classic novel: _Pride and Prejudice and Palins_.

Keeping idiot fame wh*re Sarah OUT of it is probably the only hope Bristol & her baby daddy have of making it work.

As for the real celebs, GOOD FOR THEM for keeping their plans secret. The only way to keep their special day from becoming a paparazzi scrum/sideshow/debacle. What a contrast to Wee Tom and Katie Holmes, who distastefully milked it for all it was worth.

Nosy, you know what rhymes with Brile?

Vile ...

also, "Pile."

Maybe that's what they'll name their impending child: Pile Palin-Johnston.

Or, maybe they will buck tradition and name the kid something really "out there" unique, such as Jane or Mary, John or David.

So I've been to Alaska numerous times, love it and recognize it is nothing like the Lower 48. However, what's with the weird names? Levi; his sister Mercede; the entire Palin family, except Sarah and Todd.

I'm going to have to re-watch "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" now to see if sparks were flying between Cruz and Bardem. Certainly seemed like it to me when I watched it the first time, but I was hung over on a transatlantic flight, so I wasn't paying close attention.
