Kanye West makes our day by joining Twitter

By Jen Chaney

In a move that is sure to spark quotable tweets for years to come, Kanye West has joined Twitter. Frankly, it's surprising that it took him this long, but I guess he was trying to keep his trap shut after the great MTV VMA Debacle of 2009.

The hip-hop artist and controversy generator made his Twitter debut this morning with a spelling error: "Up early in the morning taking meetings in Silicone Valley."

But, demonstrating a sense of humor, he immediately followed up with a correction: "Lol I spelled Silicon wrong ( I guess I was still thinking about the other type of silicone ITS A PROCESS!! : )"

He has spent the rest of the day noting various shout-outs he's received from media outlets -- please RT us, Kanye! -- and praising Jimmy Fallon for his ability to rock a suit. He also recently paid a visit to Facebook headquarters (you know, the one in Silicone Valley -- oops, that one was my bad!), where he rapped on top of a conference room table. (This sort of thing *so* never happens in the meeting areas at The Washington Post.)

Honestly, this is the greatest news of the day, by far. Kanye, we welcome you into the social media universe. And while, by all appearances, @taylorswift13 is not yet following your tweets, we are hopeful that she will in the future. Because we believe in a Twitterverse where bygones can be bygones, celebrities can enjoy 140-character banter with other celebrities and, hopefully, you and Ms. Swift can someday engage in a Twitter battle that will shake the Internet to its very foundations.
