The unauthorized Angelina Jolie biography: A book club discussion guide

By Jen Chaney

"Angelina": coming to a book store (and maybe book club?) near you. (St. Martin's Press via AP)

"Angelina: An Unauthorized Biography" arrives in bookstores Saturday, ready to make readers use their suntan-lotioned fingers to flip feverishly through its 336 pages of largely anonymously sourced tidbits. Of course, some reviews and a number of allegedly juicy leaks from the purportedly true story of the "Salt" star, as written by speculative celeb-bio king Andrew Morton, have already begun to spread, which prompted St. Martin's Press to bump up the release date from the previously planned Aug. 3.

Here's a roundup of just a few of the topics you might discuss, should you make "Angelina" the next selection in your neighborhood book club.

Jolie's virginity: According to USA Today, the book reports that Jolie lost her virginity at 14 and was assisted in her young sexual efforts by mother Marcheline Bertrand who previously abandoned her as an infant and who gave up the master bedroom so Jolie and her then-boyfriend could make good use of it.

Book club discussion topic: Is it a good idea to allow one's daughter to have sex in one's own bed? How does the author use irony here to make an important point about gender politics and mother-daughter relationships?

The Mountain Dew incident: As the Chicago Sun-Times notes, the biography also reports that Angelina Jolie once peed into an empty Mountain Dew bottle, chilled it in the refrigerator and gave the "beverage" to the then-mistress of her father, Jon Voight.

Book club discussion topic: Do you agree that the appearance of urine symbolizes the fluidity of the relationship between Jolie and Voight? Also: Doesn't Mountain Dew already kind of taste like pee?

Jolie's hookup with Leonardo DiCaprio: Apparently Jolie and DiCaprio were set up by their agents in 1998 and semi-hooked up once, allegedly taking a shower together. Ultimately, though, they didn't have any sexual chemistry.

Book club discussion topic: What is the significance of this encounter? Is this an effective use of foreshadowing that builds additional tension surrounding the box office battle between "Inception" and "Salt"?

The Billy Bob tattoo: The tat that Jolie once had scrawled on her nether regions in honor of now-ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton was written in Helvetica font.

Book club discussion topic: What does the boldness of that font choice say about Jolie's feelings for Thornton? And why didn't she go for something edgier, like Garamond or Century Gothic?

The Brangelina relationship: Morton's book repeats that oft-uttered allegation that Jolie stole Brad Pitt from then-wife Jennifer Aniston, adding that she used adopted son Maddox as "bait."

Book club discussion topic: OMG, if this is really true, that is so awful for Jen!

Naughty photos: Scandalous pictures of Jolie -- largely naked save for nipple tape in one, and allegedly doing drugs in another -- are printed in the book.

Book club discussion topic: Nothing to discuss here. Just pass those babies around.

Jolie is a complete ass.

Posted by: anonymous67 | July 30, 2010 5:34 PM | Report abuse

I highly doubt Brad is "unaware" of Jolie's notorious past or that salacious photos would damage their relationship. I daresay that's one of the things he is attracted to ... the danger/bad girl element. She certainly is the polar opposite of Jennifer Aniston, who is by all accounts a lovely person.

Jolie's nuttier than squirrel poop.

I do wonder how men feel making love to a woman who has another man's name tattooed in her nether regions, though.

As for the font, well, maybe she just doesn't like serif fonts.

Posted by: Californian11 | July 30, 2010 5:38 PM | Report abuse

Wow, she is nutty than squirrel poop! Using your son to "trap" Brad, I can see that. She's got that rope around his throat so tight, he'd never beable to leave. She's an absolute NUT case. She does have looks but other than that she gross's me out. She's no better than all the "hookers" that got involved with the stars. She's just a HO! Why can't he see that and what he had. Who wants to be with someone that's beded 1/2 of Hollywood, I don't understand............

Hello...this is an unauthorized biography, which means it's full of nasty unsourced gossip.

I don't really care one way or the other about Angelina, but I do feel sorry for ANYONE who is considered a subject for this kind of thing. Andrew Morton is a hack.

Is it really appropriate for a Pulitzer winning paper, to discuss tabloid issues in such an irreverent manner? Isn't this more appropriate in the likes of the Enquirer or US magazine?

Posted by: oo7 | July 31, 2010 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Wait -- you mean it would be better to discuss tabloid issues in a reverent manner?

Posted by: ScienceTim | July 31, 2010 2:48 PM | Report abuse

No, you're right. A Pulitzer-winning paper should only discuss books like this in a reverent manner.

Posted by: kejones4 | July 31, 2010 2:50 PM | Report abuse

The Post seems to be going out of its way to lose quality, in editing and content. If you want to appeal to the National Enquirer crowd, you are barking up the wrong tree, they don't read newspapers to begin with, web site or print.

Meanwhile, you are losing people like me who have bought the paper edition for 40 years, who see the tabloidization of the Post as an insult, and as a sad story. Appealing to the people who watch "The Real Housewives, etc, is going to be your downfall. Get it together. Hire some real editors and writers, not bloggers.

Posted by: ozpunk | July 31, 2010 2:58 PM | Report abuse

Well Jen and Liz, I commend you on your use of levity in this otherwise serious and demanding subject matter. I will raise an argument here that perhaps humor will not be the downfall of mass media as we know it. Perhaps this is a time for those who have made biting comments about the failure of Washington Post editors to see this story as inane and unreadable, to reflect on their own choice of reading and commenting material. Take a deep breath. Release.

For all of you who are getting so bent out of shape about blogs or what the bloggers review or discuss -- why are you even here? Do you have nothng better to do than to track down things that piss you off so you can complain about them? LOL!

For Jen and Liz -- Everyone knows that these bios culled from unnamed sources are usually half BS anyway. Good job of looking at it with levity. The book is a joke that will soon be forgotten and moved to the bargain bin.

As for Angelina -- Whether nutty or not, she was a lot sexier before she decided to turn earth mother and birth/adopt a United Nations of kids. I'm sure Brad must think sometimes that maybe he should have stayed with Jen. It would be a lot quieter for him in the morning.

Posted by: Puckdawg69 | July 31, 2010 5:42 PM | Report abuse

Morton's scribblings are skewed truths, if at all. Topic for discussion: What prompts anyone to be a total leech and live off other people's lives via sensationalist books, like Morton does? What's the psychology behind it, has he a latent S/M wish to be punished in court, or does he merely want to destroy celebrities, out of envy?

I doubt this stupid book can hurt Angelina Jolie or her relationship. I doubt anyone will care about it much. Angelina did some disoriented things and then she pretty much grew up and that's it, and we all know it.

Posted by: asoders22 | July 31, 2010 5:54 PM | Report abuse

Some of you are acting like this is the lead story on the Post's front page. I rarely read celebrity news, but the teaser about the Mountain Dew bottle drew me in, and I found this piece absolutely hilarious.

A worthy, appropriate response to a book that is nothing more than more drivel from Morton, who is about as trustworthy as Nixon. Wait, has he written a tell-all about Tricky Dick? I'm sure there are some scintillating personal revelations there!

As for Jolie, she's a talented, beautiful person who has donated millions to worthwhile charities and traveled the world using her celebrity to draw attention to the plight of the voiceless. She's dramatically improved the lives of her own children and many others. I can't think of many other celebrities about whom the same could be said. If Brad Pitt were unhappy with his "crazy" mate, I'm quite sure he would have moved on before agreeing to 8 kids (or however many they have). Sure Jennifer Aniston seems sweet, but sweet can get boring. I doubt Jolie is ever boring, and that's likely a major draw for him.

Posted by: buzzbuzzard | July 31, 2010 6:11 PM | Report abuse

I am conservative, but I admire Angela Jolie. I ACCEPT that people in showbiz are a different breed! All kinds of wierdness goes with the creativity. And recreational drug use and crazy interests and oddball sex!
What I like about Jolie is that she is a major talent who believes in giving back. She works as hard for things she is interested in and cares about offscren as she does in her approach to film work. She is a considerate woman, very intelligent, very strange on some things.
That makes her INTERESTING!
There are others like her (look at some of the talented but odd Idol contestants). And this goes outside the celebs to most people's personal experience. Most of us know an usual odd duck or two. Guaranteed they do somethings we disapprove of, but we are happy to know them because they do many things commendable as well, and we find them INTERESTING and an enhancement to our life experiences.

And most of us want more of that, and when the people around us do not furnish the variety, the talent we want to associate with in real life - we adopt celebrities as vicariously filling in those gaps. It is more than just being entertained or savoring Jolie's big rack. She interests tens of millions.

The "naughty photos" are no big deal. She has already appeared nude in at least half a dozen movies.

Posted by: buffysummers | July 31, 2010 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Who cares. I find writing and revealing unauthorized biographies about another person despicable and cowardly. The author of the unauthorized biography and the reporter at the WaPo are even more disgusting and despicable that anything Angelina Jolie did in the past. Whatever Angelina Jolie did in her past or during her youth is her own business. Angelina Jolie seems to have found another way to channel her bad past and negative energies, by doing charity work and adopting children who came from impoverished backgrounds. She seems to have become a better person in doing so. So unless she committed a crime, anything she did wrong in her previous life should be between the All Mighty and herself. By the way, to the best of my knowledge, Angelina never claimed she is perfect.

Posted by: fridaolay | July 31, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Seriously...I like Angelina Jolie's movies...i don't care about her as a person.

But the fact that the WP actually wrote this drivel is astounding. And shameful.

So much for real, useful reporting.

PASS THOSE BABIES AROUND!

What does this say about the article's author or authors? They get off on naked pix of women?!? When I read that comment, I was sure it was written by a man. When I realized it wasn't, I thought to myself -- hmmmm, tramps writing about a tramp, or something to that effect. I should be careful not to stereotype, but when you consider the real weightiness of WHAT they write about (yes, sarcasm), and HOW they write about the stuff they write about, one could quite easily draw the conclusion that these two gals are shallower than a dried up African watering hole. 30 years from now, when they fondly look back on their remarkable body of work and realize that none of it helped improve anyone's lot in life; none of it helped to make the world a better place to live; none of it inspired anyone to seek a cure for cancer or Alzheimer's; and none of it ever threatened to give today's brand of journalism a much-needed credibility boost, they can proudly rest on their laurels and the fact that they were single-handedly responsible for the establishment of "Wednesday--Porn Movie Day" in their retirement village.

I'm not defending Jolie, but...
a) people can't be "stolen" unless they're so inclined;
b) by adopting those kids, she's taking positive action to give those kids a better life;
c) envy is a terrible thing; and
d) "The only thing worse than being talked about, is NOT being talked about."

This woman is gross. Even if only a fraction of what is rumoured about her is true, this is not a good person or someone to be admired. Even the stuff we know to be true about her is enough to be a huge turn-off. Also, she is only in her 30's but while still a beautiful woman, she looks at least 15 years older than her actual age. By age 50, she will be washed up. And I'll just say this -- her talent didn't get her where she is. If her father weren't famous, it is a big question mark as to whether Angelina would have gotten anywhere further than being a porn website model.

Posted by: cougar49 | August 1, 2010 2:01 PM | Report abuse

First of all, I am disgusted with myself for even reading this article. Shame on me! This woman disgusts me and is a terrible role model for young women. Sex for her seems to be pretty much as it would be for an animal - unrelated to love. If even half the stuff mentioned in this article is true, she is immoral and revengeful. No matter how beautiful she may be on the outside, it appears that she is not a beautiful person on the inside unless she has changed a great deal in recent years, which is possible since people are capable of seeking to be better people.

RightStuff,
By your narrow-minded statement, you're condemning everyone that has a tattoo - Angelina as well as countless people from all walks of life, all levels, including some of our best and bravest military members who are daily putting their lives on the line so you're able to come on here and lay your stupid judgement on others. As a retired military person, I suggest you take that quote and shove it where the sun don't shine. That's where it belongs you religio-nazi idiot.

Nikkofly,
Thank you for your dissertation on the worth of this article now and in the future. Maybe we can all compare it to your body of work after you die and see how it compares. Let us know what you write or create or do to help others. You sound like another judgemental moron.

joelevin,
Great comment -- I'm surprised you were able to type it from under your white hood and robe. I wonder what you and your redneck wife look like when you do the beast with two backs. Are you even able to get close enough with you beergut hanging out like it does? I'm sure your grunting doesn't sound animalistic at all, does it? Sieg Heil, you piece of $hit.

cougar49,
With a username like that you call Angelina gross? What do you think you look like going after 20-year old boys in your crinkly old body? Give it a rest lady. Take your Geritol and load up the batteries in your toy. Give the young guys a break.

Puckdawg69,

Now THERE is a charming name, as he makes fun of someone else's. He calls me a "judgmental moron". That's odd -- isn't HE being a judgmental moron when he calls me one, since you know absolutely nothing about me? Hmmmmm. (Nikkofly scratches his head) Oh, and what does the 69 stand for in your name? Take your time and make up a a really convincing comeback now. You assassinate the character of not one, not two, not three, BUT FOUR posters in one fell swoop! That might dang near be a record of some sort! Have any mirrors in your basement? Try looking into one. Perhaps you could even consider removing the redwood tree from your own eye so you can see more clearly to remove the speck from mine and your other attackees. Do you think? Huh? You're a real class act Puckdawg69 -- with that really kewl, charming, handsome handle. Frankly, I think it fits you perfectly based upon the meanspirited, uncalled-for attacks on four folks who had the audacity to express an opinion on YOUR website. You DO own it don't you? Could have fooled me! Actually, I never should have dignified your post with this response. It clearly wasn't deserving of one. You appear to be just one of those holier than thou armchair warriors who thinks they are so blasted superior to everyone else on the planet that they can merely sit back in the privacy of their own dark, dank corner and pick'em off four at a time. Keep up the expert hypocritical work. You have certainly found your calling, Puckdawg69.

Don't feel bad for these celebrities - when you're not in the news, you're history in the entertainment world. Like Madonna, Jolie has done an excellent job of marketing herself.

It's just like coming upon a car wreck when out for a drive. We inquiring minds are reading along, thinking our high and mighty thoughts (LOL), and then just can't help rubbernecking in on an article like this.

I admire Angelina and Brad a lot. I think the media is trying to use Angelina as bait for attention. Angelina had a full of life when she was single, but as soon as she open her eyes and found out the real world we are living in,She changed right away to a better person. I feel pitty towards people who always saying, she stole Brad from Jennifer, pitty, pitty Brad is mature enough to do whatever he want to do...like last week, when Angie's movie is coming,Jennifer also want some media attention,so she brought out her perfume whatever...please don't compare Jennifer and Angie because of Brad. but above all, don't compare what kind of person they are, because they are totally differrent. one is thinking about her own image, her look, her body infront of the public... one is thinking about the family, partner and the world. I am proud of Angie, she totally accomplish lot of things. She tried everything before and now she changed. so leave her alone. Her and Brad are the King and Queen of the Hollywood, no matter what you guys are saying, to me they are the totally King and Queen...I hope Jennifer will find a love or boyfriend, so she will stop competing for media attention...I did noticed Angelina as a hollywood actress, but noticed her as a refugee ambassador of the united nation, and from now on, I will support her movie and Brad's movie, because they deserve it....and thanks for this oppurtunity.
