Celebritology Weekend: Rob Schneider has a choice word for Al Franken; celebs take a stand on chimps

Three celeb-centric stories on our radar this weekend... Sen. Al Franken, the object of Rob Schneider's bleeped insults. (Linda Davidson/The Washington Post) Schneider disses Franken: Apparently, Rob Schneider, star of this summer's film “Grown Ups,” doesn't have fond memories of working with fellow “Saturday Night Live” alumnus and current junior senator from Minnesota, Sen. Al Franken. During a recent appearance on HLN's “The Joy Behar Show,” Schneider was asked by guest host Shaun Robinson to discuss his SNL character The Richmeister — you know, the “Makin' copies!” guy that was all the rage for five minutes in the mid-'90s. While explaining how the character was created, he brought up Franken and said: “You know, the Senator — what a [bleep] he is.” Because the word actually was bleeped from the broadcast, it's unclear which expletive Schneider chose. But he immediately clarified his stance on Franken, a.k.a. Stuart Smalley, by adding:...

Friday List: Movie genres that 'Scott Pilgrim' actor Jason Schwartzman should consider

Cool T-shirt, Schwartzman. (Junko Kimura -- Getty Images) Posted Sarah Anne Hughes Jason Schwartzman, it's time to act in some non-hipster movies. (Now before anyone gets their skinny jeans in a twist, this is not an attack on hipsters or the films they enjoy. Hipsters are good people: They recycle, make cool music and cut down on pollution by biking.) His past super-cool-kid acting credits -- to say nothing of his hipster music background -- include "I Heart Huckabees," "Marie Antoinette," "Bored to Death" and hipster god Wes Anderson's "Rushmore," "The Darjeeling Limited" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Schwartzman's latest film, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” is a comic book movie first and foremost, but certainly has hipstery elements: Ramona Flowers' trendy, candy-colored hair, an indie rock soundtrack featuring Broken Social Scene, Beck and the fictional band Sex Bob-omb and, of course, indie darling, Michael Cera. (For more on this...

'Eat Pray Love': Parsing our feelings about all those product tie-ins

Julia Roberts, in "Eat Pray Love," wearing a hat you can probably buy somewhere. (Sony) When most women finished reading the final words of easily digestible spiritual wisdom in Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat Pray Love," they probably didn't close the book and think: "What I really need right now is a $359.99 Indonesian oversized bench with a cushion." But just such a bench -- and canisters of "Eat Pray Love" black tea, and leather journals, and tunics that would look perfectly casual yet chic on that next visit to an ashram in India -- are all for sale as part of the marketing blitz surrounding the release of "Eat Pray Love," the movie. World Market has devoted an entire department to products tied, both vaguely and directly, with the New Age-y rom-com. The Home Shopping Network has done a similar push. And plenty of travel agencies are trying to capitalize...

Want to know why so many people hate movie critics? Here you go.

This is not the best time to be a mainstream movie critic. Some of them are getting fired, and the ones who aren't live in daily fear of the sassy film bloggers that threaten their existence. Rotten Tomatoes provides ongoing evidence that there may be too many of them, or at the very least, that there is an urgent need to diversify the largely white, male members of the cinema reviewing community. Average moviegoers often make scathing remarks about all those "snobby critics" who just don't understand "real entertainment." And on top of everything else, some people in this profession had to sit through "Marmaduke." So as a frequent film reviewer myself and a lover of people who love cinema, I hate to jam my thumb into an already open sore. But the truth must be told: movie reviewers sometimes deserve to be disliked. And in an excellent piece today...

Fan of Snooki. Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi: Tequila Drinker. Pink Slipper Wearer. Poofy Hair Trend-Starter. Fan of John McCain. These two crazy kids, despite their differences, have managed to find common ground: their mutual admiration for, well, each other. Talking 'Lost' with Michael Emerson -- Emmys, epilogue, finale and more

Michael Emerson, in Ben Linus mode. (ABC) More than two months have gone by since "Lost" left our lives. But due to recent and upcoming events -- the release of the season six and complete series DVDs on Aug. 24, the recent online leak of the series epilogue that appears on said DVDs, the upcoming "Lost" auction and the Emmy Awards -- the island drama hasn't exactly disappeared from the cultural landscape. And let's be honest, neither has Benjamin Linus, the always untrustworthy master manipulator who happens to play a key role in that aforementioned epilogue. Michael Emerson, who won the Emmy last year for his portrayal of Linus and is nominated again this year, recently called from his Manhattan home to talk about that epilogue, the much-debated series finale, the possibility of a band releasing a CD called "Benjamin Linus" and why, for some reason, no one wants...

Teri Hatcher: Real and spectacular?

Teri Hatcher, on Facebook and fresh from the bath. (Teri Hatcher/Facebook) Teri Hatcher wanted to make a point about beauty. So she did what most people do: posted pictures of herself on Facebook, without make-up, after just emerging from a bath. In a photo album entitled "Oy With the Botox!!!" -- a series of images that has made the rounds on numerous media Web sites -- Hatcher admits she has toyed with Botox or fillers in the past, but doesn't anymore. How do we know? Because she can raise her eyebrows in a way that creates genuine wrinkles across her forehead. "I am alone in my bathroom naked in a towel on behalf of women everywhere trying to make a point," she writes in one of the captions. "Women YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL." She also notes that the reason so many celebrities look amazing in photos is because of lighting....

Jennifer Lopez reportedly out as 'Idol' judge

J. Lo an "Idol" no-go. (AP) | GALLERY: 'IDOL' REPLACEMENTS Looks like Jennifer Lopez won't be sharing her musical wisdom as an "American Idol" judge after all. People magazine reports that Lopez is officially out of the running for the "Idol" gig. An unnamed source that People describes as "close to the situation" said J. Lo's demands got too excessive for Fox executives, so they walked away from the deal. (Wonder if it was because she demanded that her dressing room be decorated all in white?) Presumably that means previously discussed judge contenders -- Steven Tyler, Jessica Simpson, maybe even Howard Stern -- could have their status reconsidered if any of them had already been dismissed as Simon-Cowell-replacement options. Either way, it's going to be hard to make the new season of "Idol" as interesting as all this pre-game speculation. Source: People Magazine...

Justin Bieber and the water bottle: Autotune remix

This was inevitable. Given the interest in the video of Justin Bieber getting nailed by a water bottle, it was only a matter of time before someone did the autotune remix. Just to clarify: It's not nice to throw objects at people, whether it's the Biebster or someone else. That said, if you can watch this video without spewing Coke Zero all over your computer monitor, you are a far, far better person than I am....

Hot trend of the moment: Candy-colored hair

Mary Elizabeth Winstead in "Scott Pilgrim" -- pretty in pink hair .. and blue ... and green... (Universal) The hot hair trend of the moment isn't blond, brunette or even red. It's more like ... ROYGBIV. Celebrities and fictional characters of all sorts -- from Katy Perry to Ramona Flowers, the chick with seven evil exes in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" -- have been popping up with hair colors that appear to have been borrowed from the nearest bag of Skittles. While cos players and manga fans -- the sort of people who come to Comic-Con in costume -- have long sported the Easter egg look, lately it's becoming more mainstream, even more mainstream than it did after Kate Winslet played Clementine in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Seriously, is Frenchie from "Grease" now responsible for dying everyone's hair and/or supplying their wigs? Given the ubiquitousness of...

Is Jennifer Aniston really destructive to our society?

Easily outraged Fox talk show host Bill O'Reilly has blasted Jennifer Aniston for making comments that he says are "destructive to our society." And no, he's not talking about the fact that she said she would like to be in the "Arrested Development" movie. In a press conference earlier this week to promote her upcoming rom-com, "The Switch" -- a movie that happens to be about a woman who gets artificially inseminated -- Aniston said that a woman does not need to settle with a man just to have a child. Most people would hear that statement and say, "That's technically true." They would not think, "Man, Jennifer Aniston is going to convince a bunch of 12-year-olds that it's okay to go out and get pregnant." But then, most people are not Bill O'Reilly. Here's video from his Fox show in which he and commentators Margaret Hoover and Gretchen Carlson...

Fantasia Barrino hospitalized

Fantasia Barrino is reportedly recovering from an overdose. (Fox -- File photo) Fantasia Barrino was hospitalized last night in Charlotte, N.C. for what several media outlets are reporting as a medication overdose. The singer and onetime "American Idol" was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville on the same day that news broke regarding a lawsuit that accuses Barrino of breaking up a couple's marriage. A North Carolina woman filed court documents last week that claim her husband, Antwaun Cook, and Barrino engaged in an illicit affair and recorded sex tapes; Barrino's reps have denied that she caused the marriage to dissolve. Barrino's condition is reportedly not life-threatening. Source: People Magazine...

Britney Spears will appear on 'Glee'

Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy confirmed to Ryan Seacrest that Britney Spears will appear on an episode of the hit Fox show. “Britney, I think 100 percent, is going to be on the episode,” Murphy said on Seacrest's radio show. Seacrest confirmed it again on his Twitter. While we already knew that there would be a Britney-centric episode via a Comic-Con panel, this takes the episode to a whole new level. (After Comic-Con, Jen wrote, "During the press conference [Murphy] said, 'Brittany will sing one.' I initially thought he meant Britney, as in Spears, but in retrospect, I believe he was referring to the Brittany played by Heather Morris." Don't doubt your instincts, Jen!) "Glee" cast members have already voiced their approval. "I like 'Toxic' the best or the 'Slave' video. It was always her best performance. She's rocking! I don't care what I do," Heather...

Who is Brittani Senser, Levi Johnston's date at the Teen Choice Awards, anyway?

Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes Levi Johnston has been a busy boy. First, Johnston and baby mama Bristol Palin announced their engagement. About three weeks later, they called the whole thing off, with Palin telling People she "got played" by Johnston. And to cap it all off, his manager announced that the 20-year-old would run for city office in Wasilla, Alaska. Oh, and he's filming a reality show to document his journey into the political arena. Despite his political ambitions and failed engagement, Johnston somehow found the strength to attend this year's Teen Choice Awards. Instead of walking the red carpet with Kathy Griffin, Johnston made the rounds with a pretty brunette on his arm. So, who is this mystery girl? Find out after the jump....

Did Emma Watson cut her hair for 'Dragon Tattoo' audition?

Emma Watson's pixie cut: liberation or audition? (Facebook) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes When “Harry Potter” cutie Emma Watson announced on Facebook that she had chopped off her long locks in favor of a shocking pixie, it seemed she took the haircut plunge for personal reasons. Watson posted this message on her page: "Cut my hair off a few days ago ... Feels incredible. I love it. I've wanted to do this for years and years; it's the most liberating thing ever. Hope you like.” But perhaps the cut was less about liberation and more about an audition. Sources, including the Sun, are speculating that the 20-year-old actress shed her tresses to audition for the role of Lisbeth Salander in the U.S. remake of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” Playing Salander, described by our own Paul Williams as a "pierced, bisexual, damaged and dangerous waif with a photographic...

Justin Bieber's head meets water bottle, makes Internet users giggle

In astonishing new footage that, by all appearances, has been covered up since a Sacramento radio station hosted its Jingle Ball concert last December, we can now see that Justin Bieber getting hit in the head by a water bottle onstage. Only one person threw one water bottle, but this YouTube clip, posted today, replays the footage multiple times, allowing viewers to wince/do a spittake as many times as possible. It sort of reminds of the replay of Joe Theismann's famous 1985 leg break, except this is infinitely more hilarious and didn't make me want to upchuck into the nearest available receptacle. To Bieber's credit, he shrugged off the bottle-hit -- although he did acknowledge that it hurt -- and moved on, probably under the assumption that this minor moment would easily be forgotten. But thanks to YouTube and the ever-growing industry known as Justin Bieber Meme Generating (or JBMG),...
