Celebritology Weekend: Madonna sued over clothing line; alleged salon scammer pleads innocence

Three celeb-centric stories on our radar this weekend... The material girls, Madonna and daughter Lourdes. (AP Photo/Peter Kramer) A ‘Material’ suit: A clothing company has filed a lawsuit against Madonna that says the pop megastar’s fashion line for teens, Material Girl, is infringing on its brand. Reuters reports that L.A. Triumph says in court documents that it has been selling clothing under the same name since 1997, and that the singer -- who, for the record, has been dubbed the Material Girl since 1985 -- does not “have the right to trade in the same space under this brand.” The suit was filed Thursday in California District Court. Madonna has yet to comment on the matter, nor have reps for Macy’s, the department store where Material Girl apparel is sold. Madonna designed the ’80s-reminiscent line with her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes. Celeb salon owner asserts innocence: Maria Gabriela Perez, the Beverly...

Should Josh Holloway star in a 'Rockford' remake?

The many faces of Sawyer ... and perhaps Jim Rockford. (Photo courtesy Get Lost podcast) Remember when Sawyer was a police detective in the "Lost" sideways-flashes? Great. Now how would you feel about watching Josh Holloway in a private investigator role every week? Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Holloway's name has come up in conversation as a viable candidate for the job of Jim Rockford in an NBC redo of "The Rockford Files." (For those who don't recall, it was a much-loved detective show in the '70s starring James Garner.) Ausiello's source emphasizes that there are no serious talks underway, but perhaps if enough fan squee-ing ensues, conversations could intensify. A "Rockford Files" remake was in the works previously at NBC, but was abandoned after the pilot -- which featured Dermot Mulroney in the lead role -- was deemed too listless. Would "Rockford" be more enticing...

Friday list: Sexy celebrity magazine covers

The magazine cover that has captured the public's imagination and, perhaps, reminded some people to give blood. (Rolling Stone) It seems people can't stop staring at/talking about/Google-searching for the "True Blood" Rolling Stone magazine cover. Nude, bloody and hot vampires are super-sexy. Who knew? (Um, everyone?) The subject came up during our weekly Celebritology discussion Thursday and sparked a conversation about other memorable celebrity magazine covers, particularly those that show a bit of famous skin. There are two that rise above all others as the most iconic in this department. But they're hardly alone. With that in mind, we turn the page to today's Friday list, a look at 10 sexy (or comically sexy) celebrity magazine covers....

Ideas for the Kanye West/Taylor Swift VMA reunion

The magical Kanye West/Taylor Swift moment from the 2009 VMAs. (AP) Chelsea Handler, newly appointed host of the MTV Video Music Awards, has made it clear that she wants Kanye West and Taylor Swift to reunite during next month's VMAs. Surely you remember the West/Swift moment from last year's VMAs. How could you forget, really, when your co-workers still, a full year later, jokingly interrupt people by saying "Imma let you finish"? As noted in today's Celebritology morning mix, Handler said Thursday during Ryan Seacrest's radio show that she's actively exploring ways to get the two of them together during the show. "We'll try and think of something clever to do with them, because that would be really fun," she says. "Everyone loves Taylor Swift, and Kanye's ... Kanye." Chelsea, you might want to butter up Kanye a *little* more if you want him to roll with your plans....

Abby Elliott, Fred Armisen, Elisabeth Moss: Just the FAQ

Fred Armisen and Elisabeth Moss at last year's Emmy Awards. (AP) The most surprising celebrity-couple news of the past week -- you know, besides the fact that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have kissed in Canada -- is that Fred Armisen and Elisabeth Moss have reportedly split, and Armisen is now dating his "Saturday Night Live" co-star Abby Elliott. Naturally this raises all kinds of questions. And that means it's time for an FAQ....

10 'Lost' auction items that will really tie the whole room together

"Lost" fans who have long dreamed of owning John Locke's compass or a box of Dharma wine could finally find fulfillment this weekend, courtesy of the "Lost" auction. As serious Oceanic 815ers already know, Profiles in History is hosting a "Lost" auction Saturday and Sunday in Santa Monica, Calif., where 1,100 items from the series -- costumes! props! Hurley's Camaro! -- will be sold to bidders who name their price in-person, via telephone or online. (I got a sneak peek at some of them back in May, at an exhibit in New York.) Joe Maddalena, president of the auction house, says interested buyers are coming to California from as far away as Italy and France; one couple is driving all the way from Pennsylvania for the privilege of, perhaps, owning one of Benjamin Linus's passports. "This is the most interest we've ever had in an auction," says Maddalena, who...

Is the new Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston rom-com 'The Switch' cute or creepy?

Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes When I first saw the trailer for the romantic comedy “The Switch” – previously called “The Baster” – I was pretty excited by the cast. "Arrested Development’s" Jason Bateman? Check. Former Brad Pitt kissers, Jennifer Aniston and Juliette Lewis? Check and check. Plus, the one and only Jeff Goldblum?! Then I watched the trailer again and paid more attention to the plot. It’s kind of…creepy. Allow me to explain. Kassie (Aniston) wants a baby and decides to be artificially inseminated, not by her neurotic best friend Wally (Bateman), but by a well-meaning tool named Roland (Patrick Wilson). On the night before she’s inseminated, Wally – who is secretly in love with her – gets drunk, spills the specimen and, in an alcohol-induced blackout, deposits his swimmers into the cup. Seven years later, he meets Aniston’s similarly neurotic child and thinks, "Hey, that kid is...

In the wake of the death of Frank Ryan, mixed feelings about mourning

Frank Ryan, plastic surgeon to the stars, dead at 50. (AP) The sudden death of Frank Ryan -- a plastic surgeon who nipped and tucked the rich and famous for many years -- is yet another example of a celebrity passing that leaves us feeling a little conflicted. Ryan, 50, died Monday after he drove his Jeep Wrangler off the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. As noted in a post this morning, he was reportedly texting a Twitter item just before the accident. Ryan's Twitter page is still active; looking at his final couple of comments and the image he shared is both chilling and terribly sad. When anyone dies prematurely, it's upsetting and a reason to pause and reflect. Life can be snatched away in an instant, literally with the typing of a meaningless little Tweet. But at the same time, as sobering as Ryan's death, or any...

Report: Steven Tyler confirmed for 'American Idol'

Steven Tyler, in the "American Idol" saddle. (AP) Updated: Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton confirms that Tyler will be a judge on "American Idol," to the Star-Ledger. "Steven is doing 'American Idol.' The ink is dry on that," Hamilton told the New Jersey paper. E Online! is reporting that Steven Tyler -- frontman for Aerosmith, father of Liv and owner of the second-most-famous pair of lips in rock history -- is officially onboard as an "American Idol" judge. While Fox has not officially confirmed the news, E! cites a "very-inside music source" who says a deal was finalized last week. Also finalized as a result: the total and complete selling-out of the Aerosmith name. (I know, I know, some say that already happened at least 20 years ago.) Of course, another chair on the "American Idol" judges panel, aka the Cheesy Pop Cabinet, still needs to be filled. No word...

With 'Vampires Suck,' isn't it time to stop the spoof-movie genre?

The poster for "Vampires Suck" -- the latest in a seemingly never-ending assembly line of movie spoofs -- sports the tagline: "Some Sagas Just Won't Die." Presumably, the marketing team at Fox is referencing the "Twilight" franchise, which serves as the bloodsucking butt of pretty much every predictable joke in "Vampires Suck." But they could just as easily be talking about the genre-parody flicks they've been cranking out since 2006's "Date Movie," and that were born several years earlier, with Dimension Films' "Scary Movie" series. These comedies may be silly escapist fare, but they're silly, escapist fare of the basest, least imaginative kind. And there's one group of people to blame for the fact that these films continue to get made: ourselves....

Dr. Laura to end her radio show

Radio talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger tells Larry King on CNN that she will not renew her contract, which is up at the end of the year. "My contract is up at the end of the year, and I have made the decision not to do radio anymore," Schlessinger said. "The reason is, I want to regain my First Amendment rights. I want to be able to say what is on my mind." Dr. Laura has been under fire for repeatedly using the N-word on a recent segment of her show. "I am not retiring," she said. "I am not quitting. I feel energized." (Audio clip: Dr. Laura Schlessinger uses the N-word on her radio show) We'll get you more details as soon as we have them....

'True Blood' stars get naked for Rolling Stone

"True Blood." Also, nudity. (Rolling Stone) Ah, nudity on a magazine cover. Does anything grab our attention more effectively in the grocery stone line? Well, yes -- that would be nudity and spattered blood on a magazine cover. Enter Rolling Stone, which has placed a plasma-covered Alexander Skarsgard, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer from "True Blood" on its Sept. 2 issue, on newstands Wednesday. (Could that purposely be timed to distract America from its obvious obsession with "Vampires Suck," which releases in theaters tomorrow? No? Not so much?) As the folks at Rolling Stone themselves point out, nudity or semi-nudity is a frequent fixture on entertainment magazines. Most of us can probably immediately recall the fleshy covers -- a pregnant Demi Moore on Vanity Fair, a topless Janet Jackson (foreshadowing, anyone?) on Rolling Stone, the bare and pseudo-tattooed Dixie Chicks on Entertainment Weekly -- that succeeded in generating some...

'Piranha 3D' makes a bid for Best Picture

We've already established that "Inception" has a lock on at least a few Academy Award nominations. But now another summer movie is coming to theaters that just might threaten the Oscar prospects for Christopher Nolan's dreamscape thriller. Okay, not really. But Funny or Die has posted an amusing video (with, of course, some NSFW language) in which several cast members from "Piranha 3D" attempt to make a case for their multidimensional bloodbath's award-season prospects. In the process, they raise some valid questions. Given the amount of CGI in "Piranha 3D," why not nominate it for best animated feature? Do the Oscar organizers really want young people to watch the telecast and, if so, why do they continue to make the show so [bleep]y and boring? Why can't we change the name of Cheetos to Paul Scheer-tos? Why, I ask you?...

In light of 'Melissa & Joey,' four more '90s TV stars who could make a sitcom comeback

Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence are making a bid for renewed sitcom relevancy with the aptly named "Melissa & Joey," a sitcom that debuts tonight on ABC Family. The Post's TV critic Hank Stuever says it isn't half-bad. "You could do worse -- say, 'Hot in Cleveland,'" he writes. He also adds in a couple of "Whoas!" for good measure, because you can't mention the name Joey Lawrence without following up with at least one whoa. "Whoa!" See what I mean? Anyway, all this discussion about Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Blossom's brother got me thinking about other '90s sitcoms who deserve a chance at an ABC Family or TV Land show of their own. Here are four that immediately popped to mind....

'I'm Still Here' trailer finally reveals that we still don't know what's going on with Joaquin Phoenix

The trailer for "I'm Still Here" -- the Casey Affleck-directed documentary that's supposed to finally explain Joaquin Phoenix's bizarre attempt to become a hip-hop artist and speak unintelligibly on talk shows -- has arrived online. And after watching it, it's now very, very clear that ... we still don't know what the deal is with Joaquin Phoenix. Is he serious about ditching acting to bust rhymes? Has he cracked up just enough to make him think that his hipster-meets-homeless-dude appearance is working for him? Or was all of this a well-orchestrated, impressively lengthy attempt at performance art? Option C is certainly the most likely at this point. The trailer gives off such a "Joaquin-as-serious-artist-on-a-journey" vibe that it's hard not to laugh. And laughter may very likely be what Affleck and Phoenix intended all along. We'll know for sure when the movie is released Sept. 10. Until then, I did learn...

'Mad Men': Who was this week's empowered heroine -- Allison or Peggy?

Peggy Olson -- proud copywriter for Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce and a woman largely succeeding every day at a man's game -- broke away from her suit-and-tied work environment to hang out with some '60s-era counter-cultural hipsters during Sunday's episode of "Mad Men." Is this just one more reason why Peggy is, as Popeater contends, "the real 'Mad Men' heroine"? While I admire Peggy for a number of reasons, I'd say our Miss Olson still has some baggage to deal with before she can fully emerge as a bona fide heroine. In fact, based solely on the events that transpired in this most recent "Mad Men" installment (title: "The Rejected"), I'd say the real heroine of the show is Allison, Don Draper's now former secretary (and one-night stand) and a woman who -- as the video above demonstrates -- isn't afraid to throw an incredibly heavy cigarette dispenser at...

'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' is ... Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara, aka the new Lisbeth Salander. (Wire photo) Rooney Mara has won the role of Lisbeth Salander in the American adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," Sony announced today in a press release. Mara, who got the part after much speculation and debate over which actress should tackle the part of the hard-eged hacker, will star opposite the previously cast Daniel Craig in the series of films, based on the adaptation of the best-selling Stiegg Larsson thrillers. Director David Fincher will begin shooting "Tattoo," the first movie in the trilogy, next month in Sweden. This puts to rest the months-long debate about which contenders -- from Natalie Portman to Ellen Page to the newly shorn Emma Watson -- would ultimately emerge as the front-runner. Now, to answer the question loudly percolating in your brain: Who the heck is Rooney Mara? She's appeared in "Youth in Revolt"...

Mel Gibson gets into minor car collision

Mel Gibson, from a 2007 file photo. (AP) Mel Gibson appears to have gotten this week -- a week in which he may give his deposition in his contentious custody case with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva -- off to a bad start. TMZ is reporting that the actor, who most recently starred in a nonstop barrage of rage-filled audio tapes, got into a minor car accident Sunday. Gibson ran his 2008 Maserati off the road and into a rocky hillside while driving in Malibu at approximately 8:35 PST. His car was towed from the scene, according to a police report, and a friend gave him a ride home. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident. In other Gibson-related news, a potential witness to Gibson's alleged abusive behavior has died.
