Paris Hilton arrested on cocaine charges

By Jen Chaney

Paris HIlton was arrested in Las Vegas overnight on charges of felony cocaine possession, the Associated Press is reporting.

Hilton, 29, and her boyfriend, Cy Waits, were arrested on the Las Vegas Strip after, according to AP, police spotted what appeared to be a cloud of marijuana smoke wafting out of the Cadillac Escalade in which they were riding. Cocaine allegedly was found in Hilton's possession, although police did not say how much of the drug they discovered. Hilton was reportedly released from jail this morning; Waits remains in custody while awaiting a hearing on charges of driving under the influence.

TMZ is reporting that Hilton says the purse containing the cocaine did not belong to her. Her attorney in the case -- David Chesnoff, a Vegas lawyer who has represented numerous celebrity clients -- also cautioned people "not to rush to judgment" in his interview with AP.

This is not the first arrest for Hilton. Earlier this summer, she was detained after a World Cup match in South Africa, on marijuana possession charges, which were later dropped. She also was sentenced to 45 days in jail (and stayed there for 23 days) in 2007 after violating her probation in a DUI case.

After that much-publicized prison term, Hilton appeared on "Larry King Live" and noted that she planned to make some changes in her life. For the record, here are a few quotes from that interview.

On partying so much, she told King:

"I realized that there's a lot more important things in my life. And there's a lot more things to do. And I'm frankly sick of it. You know, I've been going out for a long time now. And yes, it's fun, but it's not going to be the mainstay of my life anymore."

She also said:

"I feel like, you know, being in the spotlight, I have a platform where I can raise awareness for so many great causes, and just do so much with this, instead of, you know, superficial things like going out."

And last:

"I've definitely matured and grown a lot from this experience, so I just -- I don't know, I just want to be -- I'm 26 years old. I'm an adult, and I am -- I have to just grow up and to be a more responsible -- a role model, because I've gotten a lot of letters from mothers and their daughters. ... I want to be a good role model for these girls."

gosh democrats are dumb. With Paris Hilton's money, she should have a driver take her everywhere when she wants to party.

"police spotted what appeared to be a cloud of marijuana smoke wafting out of the Cadillac Escalade in which they were riding"

Flimsiest probable cause ever. How does a cloud of marijuana smoke look different from a cloud of tobacco smoke?

Posted by: kcx7 | August 28, 2010 1:24 PM | Report abuse

she seems to be moving up the drug chain...
maybe someone should step in and save her before she kills herself...

Posted by: DwightCollins | August 28, 2010 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Of course the purse didn't belong to her. Those Vegas cops are very mean. And they are always lurking outside daddy's hotel.

Posted by: MRGB | August 28, 2010 2:14 PM | Report abuse

Fck her and put her in jail and forfeit the Hilton fortune to the Federal Treasury.

That'll teach her.

Does a "cloud of marijuana smoke" look different than other clouds? I'm confused.

Anyway, at this very moment, her PR people are hard at work spinning this for an official quote from Paris. Some ideas on the table:

* "Coke. It's so not hot."
* "Would I carry a purse like that? Ew. Yucky blecchy."
* "Can't a girl have a Coke and a smile anymore?"
* "Hey, it's not another sex tape, so be grateful it's just posession this time."
* "It wasn't Coke at all. If you must know, it was Coke Zero -- it's new. All of the fun but none of the illegal aftertaste."
* "No you misheard. It was PRO-pane. Cy and I were heading to a late-nite BBQ and called ahead to ask if we could bring something. Next time we're just gonna show up with a bag of ice."

Hey Democrats,

Does Lindsay know? And what about the $30 Million Dollar lawsuit for hair extensions?
Like, where are your priorities man? And Oh yeah, like, Don't worry man the DA will cut a deal.

To BIGMANONCAMPUS1 and kstobbe1: You seem to have mistaken this for a political chat, so shoo! scat! just scuttle on back to under the rock where you belong and leave the snarking here to the celebritologists.

"Sunday Night Lights" (Dress-Hunting With Connie Britton):

Who'd have imagined Connie majored in Asian studies at Dartmouth, and speaks Mandarin Chinese? Also, she's recently been "working on a self-financed documentary about orphans" in Ethiopia. (What's the chick equivalent of a bromance?)

Oh, and in that 2007 photo of Paris, she looks like she's been going to the same tanning salon or spray-booth as John Boehner or Ric Flair (for those who followed yesterday's chat with the Post's Chris "The Fix" Cillizza, who's also a FNL fan; how's that for thread-weaving?).

Posted by: Nosy_Parker | August 28, 2010 4:57 PM | Report abuse

She's worth like $100 million, yet she still smokes her weed in public instead of getting a room somewhere. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Odds that she will ever do jail time for this, like the rest of us would: about 100,000-1.

Posted by: mr_bill_10 | August 28, 2010 5:23 PM | Report abuse

There's only 2 people in the car and Paris says the purse is not hers. That means one of 2 things:

1. The boyfriend carries a purse. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

2. Paris stole someone's purse. Not much better than being busted for coke.

However, watch this get kicked on probable cause. yeah, right, marijuana smoke and "smelled burning marijuana" but no marijuan found only coke. Hmmmmmmmm.

Just think of it this way, ep: No doubt Paris' attorney is handsomely remunerated (heck, s/he is probably on retainer).

Posted by: Nosy_Parker | August 28, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Nosy, doesn't help since I am not her handsomely remunerated attorney.

Why can't I get clients like this?

Surprise, surprise, the owners of nightclubs in Wynn casinos can supply drugs to people. There should be raids on all casinos and nightclubs in casinos. Drugs are supplied by the places to high rollers. This illegal stuff must stop. Raid them all.

Does she accept responsibility for the 72 dead Central Americans killed in Mexico last week or any of the other thousands of Hispanics being killed in Mexico as a result of the war between the drug lords who are funded with the money she uses to buy her cocaine and other illegal drugs? She has blood on her hands.

I read this headline on my way out today, all i could htink about was her tweeting:

"...still in jail...looking forward to partying on the Rivera again soon!"

Posted by: tokenwhitemale | August 29, 2010 12:45 AM | Report abuse

sad to say this but it's somewhat obvious

Her problem isn't "partying". People party all the time and don't get busted for having cocaine on them...and the only reason they got pulled over in the first place is that they were driving around town smoking vast quantities of weed, making it obvious that they were using illegal drugs.

Her problem is that she is a stupid woman. Doesn't matter whether it was her purse or not, why is she hanging around with people who do recreational drugs, especially when she's out on probation for DUI?

The 23 days in jail wasn't enough for her? Well, back you go, Paris. Have a good time on your 6 to 9 month stint this time. Doesn't matter if they convict you or not: if you're on probation and get arrested, that's a violation of your probation which can put you right back in jail. You have to either really want to go to jail or be a complete idiot to hang around with stoners and druggies while you're on probation.

Unfortunately, Paris Hilton thinks she is above the law. I dont think she is so unintelligent or just that dumb to be so obvious with her drugs. She still thinks "those laws" are for everyone else and not her. Yeah, "growing up" my ass. I hope the judge throws the book at her and whom ever was with her like the rest of us. Think about it. If you or I got stopped with weed and coke was present and we had her recent rap sheet, I'm sure our day in court would not be an in and out in a couple of hours. Same thing for Lindsay Lohan. The justice system is a joke.

If this were an African American young woman from the inner city, she would be detained without bail, waiting for the judge to hand down her mandatory 5-year sentence.

Paris Hilton however will no doubt get ANOTHER slap on the wrist and told to go home and be a good girl.

Never presume Paris Hilton is a dumb blonde - she knows exactly which judges can be bought and how much it costs to buy them.

Justice is not blind - it's color is green

How does marijuana smoke look any different than cigarette smoke "wafting" out of a vehicle. I am note a fan of Paris but should the police be allowed to pull you over because they see smoke coming out of a window of your vehicle? I thought they needed probable cause of some sort to pull you over. Maybe the old "toutine traffic check" would have sounded better.
