Chelsea Handler, Aziz Ansari help make the case for watching Sunday's VMAs

Chelsea Handler hosts the VMAs this Sunday. (AP Photo/Shea Walsh, file) If you aren't convinced that this Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards are worth your time, I'm here to help. The fact that MTV only plays music videos during the credits for reality shows and times when only nocturnal creatures are awake makes this awards ceremony seem kind of silly. But with the popularity of YouTube and other video-sharing Web sites, musicians are still bothering to put out great videos, despite limited MTV airtime. I actually think this year's show has a few promising moments in store. So allow for me, if you will, to make a case for watching the 2010 VMAs....

Justin Bieber avoids water balloon-related arrest

Justin Bieber: Outlaw? (AP) Justin Bieber may look innocent, but don't let that shaggy haircut fool you. At his Maryland State Fair concert last Sunday, Bieber was "horsing around with members of his staff" and threw water balloons at state troopers, a state police spokesman said. The liquid-filled projectiles struck two officers, but no incident report was filed for Bieber's "inappropriate behavior." He was apparently saved by a bodyguard who talked the cops out of arresting the teen sensation. Bieber himself has been the victim of a water-filled item throwing incident. YouTube footage of the Bieb being whacked in the head by a water bottle surfaced last month. Seems to me like Bieber received special treatment. In June, a teen in Georgia was arrested on three felony charges of throwing water balloons at moving cars, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. I guess it's good to be the Bieb....

LFO singer Rich Cronin's death sparks collective nostalgia

Rich Cronin's death sparks collective nostalgia. (Reuters/Fred Prouser/Files) Yesterday, the death of LFO lead singer Rich Cronin dominated entertainment news coverage. His name, perhaps unfamiliar to younger people and forgotten by older ones, stayed a Google trending topic for the whole day. Cronin's death after a battle with leukemia is, of course, an extremely sad event, but it also offered a moment of collective '90s nostalgia. Listening to "Summer Girls," a song I used to listen to as an elementary school student, made me think of the time when boy bands ruled the world and when I used to argue the merits of the Backstreet Boys over *NSync (okay, I still do that.) After checking out YouTube comments on LFO songs and the comments section of Cronin tributes, my feeling isn't unique....

Romancing the 'Shore': Snooki's loves, legal troubles

Snooki looks bored at court. (Mel Evans/AP) Posted by Katie Rogers For Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and the rest of the “Jersey Shore” denizens, it’s officially an amazing time to be a pop-culture phenomenon. That’s because the weekly show has actually become less interesting than the daily craziness we get from the cast via the 24-hour news cycle....

Britney Spears responds to former bodyguard Fernando Flores's lawsuit

Britney Spears sued. (Matt Sayles - AP) A statement has been posted on Britney Spears's Web site responding to the lawsuit filed against the pop star by former bodyguard Fernando Flores. "This lawsuit is another unfortunate situation where someone is trying to take advantage of the Spears family and make a name for himself," the statement reads. The statement goes on to say that Flores's allegations have been investigated by the Department of Children and Family Services and the case was closed, a claim that Spears's ex-husband, Kevin Federline, made earlier. Flores sued Spears on Wednesday claiming sexual harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. He accused the pop star of hitting her children with his belt and exposing herself to him....

In Reagan biopic, who should play Nancy?

Who would you cast as Nancy Reagan in the upcoming biopic? (Dennis Cook/AP) A biopic about Ronald Reagan is in the works. The film, simply titled "Reagan," will be based on two biographies about the former president written by Paul Kengor ("The Crusader" and "God and Ronald Reagan") and will cover Reagan's life, from boyhood to the presidency. It's not clear what the film's tone will be, but script writer Jonas McCord said this of Reagan, "I was of the opinion that at best he was a bad actor and at worst a clown." I think that's a decent indicator....

Lady Gaga restores harmony to D.C.'s Little Monster universe

Whether you love Lady Gaga or can't stand her, this video of the pop star stopping an alleged fight at her D.C. show last night is pretty awesome. In the footage, Gaga is performing the song "Monster" when she suddenly says, "Stop the music." The music fades and the lights go black as she sternly commands: "Stop fighting. Do not fight at this show." The crowd goes wild. Over at Click Track, Chris Richards has a review of Gaga's show at Verizon Center, complete with pictures. Please continue to tweet your fan photos to @washingtonpost or send them to our summer concert gallery. And check out our video of some of the outrageous fan looks from the show last night. Does anyone who attended the show remember the incident that stopped the music? Was Gaga's cease-fighting command as cool as it seems on video? Tell us in the comments section....

Willow Smith -- following other celeb kids -- goes into family business

Those Smith kids sure are cute -- and talented! (Chris Pizzello/AP) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes The musical debut of Willow Smith, the 9-year-old daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, has leaked. "Whip My Hair," a bouncy, Rihannaesque tune, has been well received by musicians including Solange Knowles and Brandy. Of course, Willow is not new to showbiz. She starred alongside her dad in 2007's "I Am Legend." Willow's brother, Jaden, is also an actor, starring in the hit remake of "The Karate Kid" this year. Oh, and her father is an Oscar nominee and the former "Fresh Prince," plus her mother kicked butt in the "Matrix" sequels. While these Smith kids are talented, they will have to deal with haters who claim their mom and dad are the reason for their success. Of course, children of celebrities receive a huge boost from their famous folks, but...

Jenny Slate leaves 'Saturday Night Live,' and we ask, what went wrong?

Was it this sketch -- when Jenny Slate swore on live, national television -- that sealed her fate? (YouTube screengrab of Jenny Slate on "Saturday Night Live.") Oh, Jenny Slate, we hardly knew ye. After only one season on "Saturday Night Live," Slate received the old heave-ho and will reportedly not return to the show for its 36th season. Slate was barely on the NBC gray lady long enough to make an impression on the audience beyond her sadly infamous obscenity slip during her debut. So, what went wrong for Slate? Did that one slip of the tongue do her in? Let's examine her brief tenure on "SNL."...

Angelina Jolie, the goodwill ambassador of UNHCR, meets internally displaced people at the Kandaro II flood victim relief camp. (REUTERS) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes Angelina Jolie appealed to the international community Tuesday to provide aid for the victims of Pakistan's recent flood during her visit to the country. The 35-year-old actress and "goodwill ambassador" for the U.N.'s refugee agency met with victims and said, "I am very moved by them and I hope that I am able to, today and tomorrow, be able to do something to help bring attention to the situation for all of the people in need in Pakistan." The flood, Pakistan's worst natural disaster, killed more than 1,700 people. In light of Kanye West's tweeted apology, we look at ways celebs use Twitter

Tweet your heart out, Kanye. (Evan Agostini/AP) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes Posted has been updated The Kanye West Twitter apology to Taylor Swift is the stuff that entertainment bloggers' dreams are made of. Did he mean what he tweeted? How will Swift respond? Will they reunite at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards? Who will be the next celebrity to pour their guts out via Twitter?! When a celeb uses Twitter to, say, promote a movie or album, it makes sense. But when a celebrity uses Twitter to air dirty laundry or bare their soul, the results are sometimes personal, sometimes sad and sometimes hilarious. While celebrities have their own motivations for tweeting, my motivation for reading their tweets is solely for entertainment. In that spirit, here are some ways celebs use Twitter....

Fashion statement: Venus Williams's questionable U.S. Open outfit

Well, it certainly is ... interesting! (Getty Images) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes While the U.S. Open is a sporting event, it also serves as a cool place for celebrities to be photographed. Kanye West, "Gossip Girl" actors Jessica Szohr and Ed Westwick, Usher, Cameron Diaz and other celebs were all reportedly at various Open events. Maybe the presence of so many spotlight-stealing celebs explains the attention-grabbing, pinkish-red, sparkle-motion outfit that Venus Williams -- a celebrity in her own right -- wore Monday. It's not so much the velour-fireworks bodice that Post producer Andrea Browne likened to an Ice Capades costume. It's the fact that there's no bottom half. Perhaps Williams was sporting the very chic, Lady Gaga-inspired no-pants look. But even after a sweltering D.C. summer, I remain firmly on team pants. What do you think of her outfit? Vote in the poll below. poll by twiigs.com...

Kanye West apologizes to Taylor Swift in 140 character bursts

Kanye West steals Taylor Swift's moment at the 2009 VMA Awards. (Jason Decrow - AP) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes Over the Labor Day weekend a miracle occurred: Kanye West apologized. The famously arrogant rapper poured his damaged heart out via Twitter to apologize to Taylor Swift for his behavior at the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards. As Swift was onstage accepting an award for Best Female Video, West grabbed the trophy from her hand and uttered the now infamous phrase, "Imma let you finish." Now less than a week before the 2010 VMAs, West spewed out a boatload of Tweets -- "These aren't regular tweets... this is stream of consciousness" -- that covered every emotion possible. At first he was defensive: .bbpBox22973683925 {background:url(http://a3.twimg.com/profile_background_images/127704333/securedownload.jpeg) #C0DEED;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px 12px;margin:0;min-height:48px;color:#000;font-size:18px !important;line-height:22px;-moz-border-radius:5px;-webkit-border-radius:5px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata{display:block;width:100%;clear:both;margin-top:8px;padding-top:12px;height:40px;border-top:1px solid #fff;border-top:1px solid #e6e6e6} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author{line-height:19px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author img{float:left;margin:0 7px 0 0px;width:38px;height:38px} p.bbpTweet a:hover{text-decoration:underline}p.bbpTweet span.timestamp{font-size:12px;display:block}...

Weekend box office: George Clooney -- and 'The American' -- are No. 1

George Clooney is No. 1. Is there anything he can't do? (AP Photo/Focus Features, Giles Keyte) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes Robert Rodriguez's "Machete" made a strong showing over the long Labor Day weekend, but George Clooney and "The American" took the No. 1 spot with a good ol' fashioned hit-man-tempted-by-one-last-job story. Thus concludes the summer movie season that saw a record revenue of $4.35 billion, according to Hollywood.com. While this is $100 million more than last summer, movie attendance is down to the lowest point since summer 2005. The culprit? Higher movie ticket prices. Darn you, James Cameron! Find out if the Drew Barrymore rom-com "Going the Distance" found box office love, if last week's top film "Takers" had staying power and more in the weekend box office rundown. "The American" brought in $16.4 million over the long weekend. Since the thriller's opening Wednesday, "The American" has taken...
