Oprah Winfrey chooses next book club selection. Surprise! It's Jonathan Franzen

Remember when Oprah Winfrey chose "The Corrections" as one of her book club selections back in 2001, and author Jonathan Franzen expressed such discomfort about the whole thing that she decided not to have the writer on her show after all?

Well, apparently it's time for bygones to be bygones. Winfrey is on the verge of announcing her next book club title, and according to the Associated Press, it's Franzen's lauded, best-selling "Freedom."

Franzen recently told Claude Peck of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he would be happy if Winfrey blessed his new novel. So presumably, he's game to come on the show and discuss it.

Can't wait to see what the Faces of the Last Season of Oprah blog entry looks like after that episode airs.

I certainly hope it's as entertaining as the video book review of "Freedom" by the Post's Ron Charles. Honestly, though, that might be asking a bit much.

Mr. Franzen, do not succumb.

The Ron Charles review was brilliant ... thanks for including! His entertainingly even-handed insights offer me further motivation to check out "Freedom."

I hope Jonathan Franzen will graciously accept Oprah Winfrey's "blessing." Any initiative that encourages people to read should be supported, especially by authors.

"Give me names!"

I was on the fence about reading this book. But Ron Charles has convinced me. More video reviews please!!! Great work WaPo.
