Celebritology Weekend: Vince Vaughn's 'Dilemma'; Hoda's shawls

Three celeb-centric stories on our radar this weekend... 1. A Universal change: Universal Pictures confirmed Friday that it plans to alter the trailer for “The Dilemma” -- an upcoming comedy starring Vince Vaughn and directed by Ron Howard -- because of complaints about its use of the word "gay." In the beginning of the original clip, which was still viewable online as of late Friday afternoon, Vaughn’s character says that “Electric cars are gay. Not homosexual gay, but, you know, my parents-are-chaperoning-the-dance gay.” Both the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and journalist Anderson Cooper advocated for the reference to be removed from the trailer, and the studio ultimately complied. “The teaser trailer for ‘The Dilemma’ was not intended to cause anyone discomfort,” said a statement released Friday by Universal. “In light of growing claims that the introduction to the trailer is insensitive, it is being replaced. A full trailer,...

Shia gets conservative. Maybe

Does this guy look like a young Karl Rove? (AP) Could Shia LaBeouf play Karl Rove? That's the question that rippled through the blogosphere yesterday after a report in the L.A. Times stated that the “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” star is interested in playing a young Rove in “College Republicans.” The movie, which traces Rove's campaign to become national chairman of the College Republican National Committee in the 1970s, doesn't have studio backing yet. Hence, all the speculation may be a bit premature. Still, there's something fascinating about imagining LaBeouf shift from Sam Witwicky in “Transformers 3” to a budding political mastermind. No 3-D for 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'

Three people you won't be seeing in 3-D in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." (Warner Bros.) Warner Bros. announced today that Part 1 of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" will release in regular old 2-D, not 3-D as originally planned. Despite everyone’s best efforts, we were unable to convert the film in its entirety and meet the highest standards of quality. We do not want to disappoint fans who have long-anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey, and to that end, we are releasing our film day-and-date on November 19, 2010 as planned. We, in alignment with our filmmakers, believe this is the best course to take in order to ensure that our audiences enjoy the consummate "Harry Potter" experience. The film will still screen in both conventional and Imax theaters. As for Part 2 of the "Deathly Hallows" -- the final film chapter in the Potter...

Miley Cyrus's new video: Too sexy for 17?

Miley Cyrus won't be 18 until Nov. 23, but in yet another raunch-filled video she's already pulling her audience along with her into R-rated 18 and older territory. Either that or I'm just a prude who finds the "Who Owns My Heart" imagery borderline icky for an underage girl (who was and continues to be marketed to children by Disney). Below, witness Miley as she writhes around on an unmade bed in what looks to be a seedy motel room and does her best impression of a table-top dancing stripper while wearing leather hot pants. We've talked about this before, but again I'm forced to ask:...

Friday List: 10 excellent celebrity and pop culture Halloween costumes

A Halloween costume that goes the ROYGBIV Internet meme route. (Photo courtesy of epicponyz, via Buzzfeed) Halloween is three weeks away, which means that, technically, there's still plenty of time to put together a costume. But if you want to do something really awesome this year -- and by "really awesome" we mean better than throwing on that Steve Urkel outfit you've been wearing every Oct. 31 since 1993 -- it's best to plan ahead. As always, we at Celebritology are here to help. We've compiled a list of 10 Halloween ensembles -- each one inspired by timely celebrity and pop culture trends -- that are sure to attract attention at any "Dead Man's Party" (or at least impress a few greedy trick-or-treaters). In the interest of providing even more suggestions, we've also created a photo gallery where you can upload photos of your own past celebrity and pop...

John Lennon at 70: His pop culture legacy

Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes John Lennon, the revolutionary musician and member of arguably the greatest band of all time, the Beatles, would have been 70 years old this Saturday had he not been shot to death in 1980 by a deranged fan outside of his New York apartment building. Lennon was 40 years old. Since Lennon's death, his legacy has become bigger than the man himself was. For better or worse, Lennon's music, creative vision and his message of peace have been kept alive through songs, film, TV and products. When I was about 10, my mother, a Beatles superfan and memorabilia collector, took me to exotic New Jersey to experience Beatlemania firsthand. In a hotel convention room I saw table after table of Beatles products, Beatles impersonators, Beatles karaoke. You name it, they Beatle'd it. Today, that interest in Lennon and his fellow Liverpudlians is still going...

'127 Hours' trailer: A hint of Franco's greatness

The full-length trailer for Danny Boyle's "127 Hours" is now online, providing a fuller glimpse of the movie's scope and a better sense of the commitment in James Franco's performance as trapped climber Aron Ralston. The gripping, occasionally grisly film (two words: graphic amputation) already has some Oscar buzz behind it. Having seen it yesterday, I'd say that's definitely justified. But check out the new trailer and take a look yourself. And check the blog in coming days, too; an interview with "127 Hours" director Danny Boyle -- the same filmmaker who won several Academy Awards and other prizes for "Slumdog Millionaire" -- will be published here in the near future....

Photographer insists Bret Michaels's unreal abs are, umm, real

(Blair Bunting for Billboard.com) Remember last week when we shared the gnarly Billboard cover shot of a naked (yet bandanna'd) Bret Michaels showing off what appeared to be impossibly plastic abs? Aside from commenter Nanc1, who insisted Michaels "stays relatively healthy by eating right, taking his insulin AND WORKING OUT," your comments were generally split between two visceral reactions: 1. Ick. And 2. No way. Now photographer Blair Bunting, who shot Michaels for Billboard, is insisting that Michaels's abs are the real deal. "When he took off his shirt, I was like, 'This guy's in shape for 47!'" Bunting tells Billboard. "It's always easy for someone to cry 'Photoshop,' so I wasn't too surprised by that... but he takes his shape seriously." Yet Bunting does admit to a little PhotoShopping: In addition to making his abs appear symmetrical, Bunting bronzed Michaels' color and smoothed out his skin to eliminate...

'Secretariat': Talking with director Randall Wallace about his horse story

The most famous Triple Crown winner in racehorse history becomes a movie star this weekend with the release of Disney's "Secretariat," the story of the thoroughbred, his owner Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) and how they managed to set records in 1975 that haven't been matched since. Randall Wallace -- the director of "Secretariat" and a filmmaker best known for his behind-the-camera work on "We Were Soldiers" and as the writer of "Braveheart" -- recently visited Washington and spent a few minutes talking about, among other things, why he took on this project after a seven-year break from directing and which horse-racing films inspired his work on "Secretariat." The movie, by the way, has gotten a three-star review from Post critic Ann Hornaday. Watch a portion of the interview in the video below. Then, after the jump, watch another clip about Wallace's appearances this season on "Entourage" in which he confirms...

Larry Hagman wins CitiGroup payday; Bristol Palin's video debut

Three celeb-centric stories on our radar this afternoon... Larry Hagman throws fake dollars during a photocall at June's Monte Carlo television festival in Monaco. (Reuters) 1. Larry Hagman's CitiGroup payday: Larry Hagman, who those of us born before 1975 may remember as the diabolical J.R. Ewing from TV's "Dallas," today won a massive payday from Citigroup Inc. In 2009, Hagman accused the company of "a breach of fiduciary duty and breach of contract, fraud by misrepresentation and omission, failure to supervise and violation of federal and state law." A federal panel agreed and awarded the actor "$10 million in punitive damages that Citi must pay to charities selected by Hagman, $1.1 million in compensatory damages and nearly $440,000 in legal fees," according to Reuters. [MSNBC] 2. Bristol Palin's video debut: In addition to clogging her way around a ballroom on "Dancing With the Stars," Bristol Palin -- daughter of erstwhile...

From GTL to grenades: A 'Jersey Shore' glossary

'Jersey Shore's' cast (back row, from left): The Situation, Vinny, Pauly D, J-WOWW, Angelina. (front row, from let): Snooki, Sammi, Ronnie. "Jersey Shore" is far more important than any of us realized. Unlike MTV's slowly ossifying "Real World" series or even the over-scripted melodrama of Bravo's "Real Housewives" franchise, "Jersey Shore" is genuine. Or as genuine as a show about men with fake tans and women with hair extensions (and their own fake tans) can be. The show is, as they say, a phenomenon. With season 2 underway and filming of season 3 already wrapped, it would seem that Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, Jenni "J-WOWW" Farley, "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio, Vinny Guadagnino, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola, Angelina Pivarnick and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino have successfully made the leap from cable obscurity to full-on pop culture street cred. For proof, look no further than ABC, where "The Situation" continues to...

So long, Sad Keanu! Happy Keanu is here.

Farewell, Sad Keanu. (Jason Merritt/Getty Images) Posted by Sarah Anne Hughes You did it, Internet! You turned Sad Keanu's frown upside down! I'm of course referring to the meme sparked by a picture of actor Keanu Reeves on a park bench looking ... sad. The photo resulted in countless PhotoShopped versions, documented on sadkeanu.com; this year's "Cheer Up Keanu Day" sponsored by a Facebook group dedicated to the cheer-up cause; and many hours of lost sleep worrying about Sad Keanu. Well, guys, it all payed off. Pictures of a smiling, almost giddy, Keanu, on the set of his new film "Generation Um," are now available for your PhotoShopping pleasure over at the Daily Mail. Interestingly enough, Reeves was only informed about Sad Keanu this month by New York Magazine's Vulture blog. I'm happy to report that he approved, saying, "Well, it sounds like harmless, good clean fun." I guess...

Chelsea Handler: 'Nothing to report' about 50 Cent

50 Cent and Chelsea Handler get close at New Orleans's Blue Nile jazz bar. (Photo courtesy TMZ.com) Despite DEFCON 4 romance buzz, Chelsea Handler took to her Twitter account on Wednesday to defuse rumors that she's romancing Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. Speculation about a possible pairing ran wild earlier this week when photos of the talk show host and rapper getting cozy at a New Orleans club surfaced online. The rumored relationship even had Forbes speculating that the pair -- with a combined $39 million income in 2009 -- could be a new Hollywood power couple. "Everyone, calm down," Handler tweeted. "I met with mr. Cent about a potential project. There's nothing to report yet, ill let you know if there is." So maybe it's all business. Or maybe the canny Ms. Handler is speaking in code. "Potential project" could mean anything from a movie script to moving in...

An autopsy has been performed, but the cause of death won't be determined released until the results of toxicology tests are in. The reluctant scoop on Lisa Rinna's Lips

Lisa Rinna sports her slimmed down smile. (AP) I'm quite possibly failing you in my duties as a board certified celebritologist. But I just cannot get excited about the mini-flurry of Lisa Rinna news. In fact, the mini-flurry of Lisa Rinna news is forcing me consider banging my head against my desk. But "Lisa Rinna" is a trending search topic on Google and won't seem to go away (not that that has, ahem, any bearing on our content), so the responsible thing to do would be to describe, in detail, her newly-slimmed down lips. Like I could wax poetic about how her lips no longer look like wax candy lips or remind one of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, but instead resemble something vaguely human....

Dan Gordon-Levitt: Remembering the brother of Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the wake of his death

Dan Gordon-Levitt. (Photo courtesy of The Fat Brat) Joseph Gordon-Levitt, star of "Inception," "(500) Days of Summer" and other films, is mourning the loss of his brother Dan Gordon-Levitt, who has died at age 36 due to undisclosed causes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt shared the sad news on his Twitter account Tuesday night, referring to his "superhero brother" and encouraging people to memorialize him at hitrecord.org, the Web site and multimedia collaborative that the brothers worked on together. In the wake of the news, interest in Dan Gordon-Levitt has increased on the Web. His name is currently a trending Google topic, and both Joseph's and Dan's Twitter accounts, as well as the hitrecord site, are not currently loading. In the latter case, it appears that the servers are overloaded. Snickers satisfies ... or terrifies?

The latest Snickers commercial wants to make consumers remember to buy those tasty candy bars in time for trick-or-treating for this year. But what it actually makes us remember is how freaky it is for a super-tall old lady to force bags of candy into our shopping carts. The new Halloween commercial from the people at Mars (see above) has gone semi-viral in the past couple of days. And the consensus online is that it's definitely a little creepy. Maybe not a childhood wrecker, but certainly a potential nightmare-inducer for younger kids. Something about that costume reminds me of a giant, falsetto-voiced, more disturbing version of Dot Jones. Which doesn't exactly make me hunger for a delicious mix of chocolate, caramel and crunchy peanuts ... although it is lunchtime, and I do love some caramel ... Seriously, while you recover from the above viewing experience, check out a few...

Oksana Grigorieva on Mel Gibson: 'I thought he would kill me'

Grigorieva and Gibson pre-split. (AP) She may have backed out of plans to appear on "The Oprah Show," but Oksana Grigorieva has moved on to the next best platform to spread the good word about her bad relationship with baby-daddy Mel Gibson: People magazine. In the latest issue Grigorieva, who had the forethought to record abusive phone calls from her Gibson and the, ummm, courage to make them public, details the night Gibson allegedly hit her while she was holding the couple's baby, Lucia. "I thought he would kill me,” says Grigorieva tells People. She also adds that Gibson frequently flew into rages and once brandished a gun at her. Still, Grigorieva claims she has nothing but warm feelings for Gibson and denies she tried to extort money from him in exchange for the tapes. I'm not angry at him," she says. "For the sake of Lucia, I really...

Emma Stone officially cast in Spider-Man movie ... but not as MJ

Emma Stone: Just call her Gwen Stacy. (CTMG Inc.) As of Monday -- based on a report on Deadline.com -- it looked like Emma Stone was poised to be cast in the next Spider-Man movie as Mary Jane Watson. Well, that information was half right. Columbia Pictures has officially announced that Stone will star in the film, but as Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's first love in the comics. The Hollywood Reporter says that Stacy will take on the key female role in this first installment of the Spider-man reboot, with Watson -- who was previously played by Kirsten Dunst -- resurfacing later. Of course, I thought Stone would be a natural for Watson because, like the character, she appears to be a redhead. (Stacy, on the other hand, is a blonde in the comic books.) Apparently that's not right either. "Much to my surprise, it was fun to find...

Rumor mill: Is Rachel McAdams dating Michael Sheen?

Michael Sheen... (Sony Pictures Classics) ... and reported new girlfriend Rachel McAdams. (AP) In potential couple news that could be the most surprising rumor we've heard since -- well, since a few hours ago, when news of 50 Cent and Chelsea Handler (to be officially dubbed "ChelCent") surfaced -- People magazine is reporting that Rachel McAdams and Michael Sheen are officially an item. The two have reportedly been seen holding hands and spending time together around Toronto, according to the National Post and other media outlets. (You'll notice I refrained from using the word "canoodling." You're welcome.) The actors appear together in "Midnight in Paris," a Woody Allen romance set in 1920s Paris and slated for release in 2011. McAdams, 33, previously dated her "Notebook" co-star Ryan Gosling, while Sheen, 41, is the former partner of Kate Beckinsale, as well as a guy known for his unrelentingly awkward affair...

(AP) Maybe all that walking into glass doors and getting beaned with water bottles was Justin Bieber's way of telegraphing to MTV execs that not only is he a hit with the kids, as they say, but capable of spontaneity, physical humor and mayhem that stops just short of "Jackass" level hijinks. If so, job well done. New York magazine's Vulture blog is reporting that "multiple industry insiders" claim the Bieb has been tapped to take over Ashton Kutcher's role in a "Punk'd" reboot. Kutcher will remain as executive producer, doubtless to lend guidance to Bieber in the art of totally staged tomfoolery. Renee Zellweger: Four ways to rehab her career

Renee Zellweger: is it time for a comeback? (AP) Renee Zellweger used to be a Hollywood A-lister. Not so long ago, she won over hearts as a trusting single mom in "Jerry Maguire," starred opposite Meryl Streep in a mother-daughter weeper and racked up Academy Award nominations three years in a row, ultimately winning an Oscar for "Cold Mountain" in 2004. Now, six years after gripping that golden statuette, she's starring in horror flops like "Case 39" -- which sputtered into theaters last weekend after a two-year-plus delay -- and lousy, forgettable rom-coms like "New in Town." What the heck happened? Both Movieline and Anne Thompson have posited some theories, as well as some ideas about how Zellweger -- who has reached the unfairly dangerous (in Hollywood) age of 41 -- could possibly turn things around. I've got four other specific suggestions that perhaps, if by some freak chance...

Courtney Love quits Twitter (again); Wyclef Jean enters academia

Courtney Love. (Getty Images) Three celeb-centric stories on our radar this afternoon... 1. Courtney Love breaks up with Twitter (again): Around noon Eastern time today, Courtney Love posted this succinct tweet: "I'm off twitter, that photo was meant for a boy friend." So apparently the naked-ish photos that Love uploaded last week -- the NSFW ones in which she reclines on a chair wearing only a pair of panties -- were a mistake. They've since been removed. Surprisingly, these equally unappetizing pix were apparently not mistakes. Now we wait and see: can the compulsive Tweeter really stay away this time? Love previously quit Twitter in October 2009 and May of this year. [@CourtneyLoveUK] Two more stories after the jump......

Rumor Mill: Chelsea Handler dating 50 Cent?

50 Cent and Chelsea Handler get close at New Orleans's Blue Nile jazz bar. (Photo courtesy TMZ.com) In what could be described as the oddest pairing since the alleged Eminem/Kim Basinger fling, TMZ.com reports that Chelsea Handler and 50 Cent (aka Curtis Jackson) were spotted getting "hot and heavy" at a New Orleans club Sunday night. According to the New York Daily News, the rapper and the comedian have been flirting for months, ever since 50 made an appearance on her E! show "Chelsea Lately." The rapper/actor "left [Handler] a flirtatious voicemail after appearing on her show, and even reportedly sent her flowers." And, again proving wrong John Mayer's contention that important things don't happen on Twitter, the social networking site reportedly played a part in their courtship. In August, 50 tweeted "I think @chelseahandler is beautiful I wanta see what that dog lookin at on her page." Sources:...

Onetime Twitterholic John Mayer explains why he quit

Twitter quitter John Mayer. (Getty Images) Remember how John Mayer used to tweet 24/7 to share his witty observations about life and, like, apologize for calling Jessica Simpson "sexual napalm?" Then remember when he quit Twitter back in September, leaving his 3.7 million followers adrift in a sea of tweets from Tila Tequila, Courtney Love and MC Hammer? Well, now Mayer is hoping fans will follow him to his blog to keep up with his brain droppings, now not limited to 140 character bursts. Yesterday, he blogged about why he quit Twitter: It occurred to me that since the invocation of Twitter, nobody who has participated in it has created any lasting art. And yes! Yours truly is included in that roundup as well. Let me make sure that statement is as absolute and irrevocable as possible by buzzing your tower one more time: no artwork created by someone...

Keira Knightley and her new 'do

Keira Knightley, rocking the bob. (Getty Images) Keira Knightley has gotten herself a nice, chic bob, a significant change from the longer tresses she usually sports. Okay, maybe not a switch as drastic as Emma Watson's hair chop heard 'round the Internet, but still, a noticeable difference. Knightley told InStyle UK that the new cut, which she got about a month ago, isn't for a particular role. "I did it for myself," she said. True, there can be something vaguely PTA meeting-ish about a proper bob like this one. But I think Knightley makes it look young and sexy. Then again, is that really a surprise? Knightley is one of those women who could get a Donald Trump haircut and dye it in rainbow colors, yet somehow still emerge from the process looking more elegant and fabulous than ever. Feel free to weigh in on Elizabeth Swann's sleek new...

Conan O'Brien gets sexy (sort of) in new TBS promo

The first promo for "Conan" that actually features the real Conan O'Brien is now online. No, sadly, he isn't dressed as Abraham Lincoln in the clip. But he is hot, sticky sweet, from his head to his feet. Based on this, I really look forward to O'Brien's next promo, which surely will feature the host and sidekick Andy Richter performing an intense duet of "Love Bites." Abraham Lincoln: Which actor should play him, in vampire-hunter form?

President Lincoln, clearly on a day off from vampire hunting. (AP) "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" -- the film adaptation of the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith -- has officially entered the pre-production phase at Fox, Variety has reported. The film -- which, like the book, reimagines key elements of American history with a lot of vampires thrown into the mix -- will be released in 3D and already is slated for a 2012 release, ensuring that we'll still be talking about vampire movies two years from now. The news has prompted a round of online opinions about who should tackle the part of a bloodsucker-battling President Lincoln. Entertainment Weekly already has put in a bid for Johnny Depp, which -- with Tim Burton producing -- seems like an entirely likely prospect. But let's pause for a moment and consider who else might bring a certain murderous dignity to the part....

Justin Timberlake: Flashback to some unfortunate, pre-'Social Network' photos

Timberlake, decking the halls. (Buzzfeed) Justin Timberlake has an infinite number of things going for him. He's currently starring in the No. 1 movie in America. He is repeatedly awesome on "Saturday Night Live." Evidently he can spit rhymes from virtually every rap song ever recorded. But even Timberlake has been captured in some exceedingly ridiculous photographs. Buzzfeed has documented this fact with its 25 Most Embarrassing Pictures of Justin Timberlake, most of them taken, not surprisingly, during the 'N Sync years. Let's comment on the four that, at least in my opinion, are the most off-the-charts embarrassing/hilarious. But first, please pause to consider how inspirational this is. If Timberlake can move on from some of these images and eventually find himself in a film that will (probably) be nominated for Best Picture, surely you can get past that hideous yearbook photo where you're wearing a retainer and your...

Strutting Leo DiCaprio meme hits warp speed

The photo that launched a thousand parodies. Download the .png template from Tumblr to create your own. Updated 11:25 a.m. ET Somehow in all the excitement of returning to work last week, I missed the "Strutting Leo" phenom. This is incredibly important. You'll probably want to recommend this post to your Facebook friends and even perhaps take the time to explain it to your mother and/or other equally Internet-meme-clueless acquaintances. So here's the deal: A photo of a gleeful marching Leonardo DiCaprio from the set of "Inception" was discovered and, like Sad Keanu did last spring, the shot inspired a flurry of creative PhotoShopping -- inserting DiCaprio in everything from a Thirty Seconds to Mars video still to your rearview mirror. After the jump: The "Leo Strut" viral video ......

Emma Stone may become Spider-Man's new MJ

Emma Stone: From "Easy A" to MJ. (CTMG Inc.) Emma Stone may be cast as Mary Jane Watson, the love of Peter Parker's (and, by extension, Spider-Man's) life in the new Spider-Man movie. Deadline reported the news over the weekend, noting that the "Easy A" star will be offered the role played by Kristen Dunst in the Sam Raimi Spidey films. As Deadline's Mike Fleming points out, this is more proof of how quickly Stone's star is rising; she's also currently shooting the adaptation of the best-seller "The Help." Is she a good choice, even better than Dunst was?...

'The Andy Griffith Show' turns 50. We pick our favorite clips

Don Knotts, Ron Howard and show namesake Andy Griffith. (AP/Viacom) If it isn't already crystal clear, Jen and I spent way too much time watching TV during our formative years. Which is why I can't remember my times tables, but can sum up the plot of most "Brady Bunch" episodes in a matter of seconds. And, like "The Flintstones," "The Andy Griffith Show" -- another fave for both of us -- is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend. The show, a career-maker for Andy Griffith and launching pad for little Ronnie Howard, centered around a small-town North Carolina sheriff and his family and led a wave of country-fied sitcoms: "The Beverly Hillbillies," "Green Acres," "Petticoat Junction" and "Mr. Ed." Not to mention the spin-offs "Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C." and "Mayberry R.F.D." But it was "Andy Griffith" that stood tall as the top-rated sitcom of the 1960s, according to Variety.com, and...
