Pop culture pulse: Zombies invade your TV

It’s rare to see the undead on television. (Feel free to insert your own tasteless Larry King joke here.) But in the coming days, the airwaves will be ripe with zombie-viewing opportunities. “Dead Set” -- a five-part British series that somehow manages to smartly merge the concept of a zombie-pocalypse with the reality show “Big Brother” -- will air for the first time in the U.S. for five nights on IFC, beginning Monday. And next Sunday, on Halloween, AMC’s much-anticipated (and hyped) adaptation of the graphic novel “Walking Dead” makes its debut. Yes, thanks to the magic of television, now nearly every night can be a night of the living dead....

Randy and Evi Quaid reportedly arrested in Canada

Randy and Evi Quaid: think they'll blame Canada?(AP) Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi, have been arrested and detained in Canada, Reuters reports. Update: The Associated Press now reports that a California prosecutor has confirmed that the Quaids were arrested in Vancouver. Their bail also has been increased to $500,000 each. The couple was detained on Wednesday in Vancouver, the news service says, where they allegedly fled after skipping a Monday court hearing regarding charges they were recently squatting in a Montecito, Calif., property they claim to still own. Canadian authorities confirmed via press release that a man and woman were arrested, but did not identify them. A private detention review hearing was scheduled to take place today at Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board. After the Quaids blew off Monday's hearing and allegedly headed to the Great White North, a California judge issued a warrant for the pair's arrest....

'Paranormal Activity 2' earns $6.3 million at midnight

The midnight screenings of "Paranormal Activity 2" got the docu-style horror flick off to a strong weekend start, bringing in $6.3 million. That figure breaks a couple of admittedly irrelevant records, as The Wrap notes: most lucrative midnight premiere for an R-rated film, and best October midnight premiere, a record that was held oh-so-briefly by last weekend's "Jackass 3-D." This makes it look likely that "Paranormal Activity 2" will be the No. 1 movie this weekend. But don't count out another otherworldly film, albeit of a wildly different sort: Matt Damon's "Hereafter" also opens in wide release today. Reviews have been decidedly mixed (I, like the Post's Michael O'Sullivan, felt largely lukewarm about it), but given the involvement of Damon and Clint Eastwood, adult moviegoers may opt for this over "Paranormal," which skews toward the heavy-Twitter-user set. There's still time to predict what will be No. 1. Just vote...

Mel Gibson out. Now Liam Neeson is in 'Hangover 2'

Liam Neeson: He'll take it from here, Mel Gibson. (AP) Mel Gibson has lost his part as a tattoo artist in "The Hangover 2." But before anyone had much chance to either mourn or rejoice, his replacement already has been found. Liam Neeson, seen most recently in "The A-Team," will play the reportedly pivotal role. We'd say this was a departure for the distinguished actor but, well, Neeson was seen most recently in "The A-Team." Presumably there won't be any objections to this selection since who the heck could possibly have an issue with Neeson? Anti-Qui Gon Jinners? People with long-standing objections to "Rob Roy"? Guess the "Hangover" crew will have to look elsewhere in the film's cast of characters for a surprisingly random casting choice. We also guess Gibson's career comeback is going to take even longer than previously anticipated. Source: The Hollywood Reporter...

Judge orders Lindsay Lohan back to rehab

Lindsay Lohan arrives at court for her probation violation hearing. (Reuters) Updated at 1:50 p.m. ET In a court hearing this morning to again address Lindsay Lohan's probation violation, a judge ordered the troubled starlet to stay in rehab until January 3, but she will not be sent to jail and, according to TMZ.com, will have her SCRAM alcohol monitoring bracelet removed. According to the Associated Press, prosecutors had sought a six-month jail stint for Lohan, but judge Elden Fox instead opted to send her back to rehab one more time. Lohan cried after the judge delivered the sentence. "You are an addict, I hope you understand that," Fox told Lohan. Dad Michael Lohan was spotted milling around the courthouse. No word on whether he was there at Lindsay's invitation. In September, Lohan was taken into custody and spent a few hours in jail after testing positive for cocaine....

Martin Freeman cast as Bilbo Baggins in 'The Hobbit'

Martin Freeman, the man who will be Bilbo. (File photo/Helayne Seidman for The Washington Post) Peter Jackson has already been confirmed as director of "The Hobbit." Now we have confirmation on Bilbo Baggins. Martin Freeman will play the hobbit who makes the long journey to Lonely Mountain in the two-part film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's book, New Line announced and The Hollywood Reporter, among other media outlets, reported. For those closely tracking news of all things "Hobbit" this doesn't come as a surprise, since Freeman had already been the subject of Baggins casting rumors. The British actor is best known for playing Tim on the original version of "The Office." He also starred in the underrated "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and appeared in "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz" and "Love Actually," among other films. Several other actors also had their "Hobbit" status confirmed in the announcement,...

Mel Gibson dumped from "Hangover 2" cameo after complaints from Zach Galifianakis, among others

No more 'Hangover' for Mel Gibson. (AP) It turns out there are some things even too offensive for a movie like "The Hangover." Convicted rapist Mike Tyson? Fine. Convicted drunk driver, sometime anti-Semite, racist and recorded hothead Mel Gibson? Not fine. Gibson won't be appearing in "Hangover 2" after complaints from the cast and crew -- including co-star Zach Galifianakis -- scuttled director Todd Phillips's plans to feature Gibson in a cameo as a Bangkok tattoo artist. Phillips released this statement: "I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of [Warner Bros. Pictures President] Jeff Robinov and his team. But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew." Despite Jodie Foster's recent assertion that Gibson is the "most-loved man in Hollywood," the "Hangover 2" cast and...

Who's on the first week of 'Conan'?

The lineup of celebrity guests for the first week of Conan O'Brien's TBS talk show was announced Thursday, with one notably open slot: the first guest. Voting to determine whom that will be is still underway at the Team Coco Web site. Jack Nicholson is running away with it right now, but there's still time to rally behind Thomas Pynchon, Vladimir Putin, REO Speedwagen or the cast of the "Fat Albert" movie. While that democratic process plays out, here's the rundown on who will hang with O'Brien during week one, assuming you don't feel like listening to the puppets explain in the video above: Monday, Nov. 8 : First Guest Poll winner, Seth Rogen and musical guest Jack White Tuesday, Nov. 9 : Tom Hanks, Jack McBrayer and musical guest Soundgarden Wednesday, Nov. 10: Jon Hamm, Charlyne Yi and musical guest Fistful of Mercy Thursday, Nov. 11: Michael Cera,...

'Jersey Shore' finale: Do we really need alligators?

The cast of MTV's "Jersey Shore." (Jeff Daly/PictureGroup) While the rest of the TV-watching world melts down about the sexy "Glee" GQ pix, let's talk about a show that embraces its trashiness: "Jersey Shore." Unlike Sunday's "Mad Men" finale, we likely won't be back tomorrow with a searching, academic dissection of the final hour of season two of "Jersey Shore" (otherwise known as "The Situation Does Miami"). Instead, we look ahead to one last hour of GTL, grenades, t-shirt time and smooshing. (Except we already know that taping has wrapped on season 3, set back in lovely Seaside Heights, N.J. and casting is underway for season 4. Not to mention possible spin-offs for Snooki and Pauly D.) Jarringly, the producers decided to mix things up for tonight's final episode -- sending Snooki and the rest of the gang on a trip to the Everglades for close encounters with alligators...

'Glee' cast members react to GQ kerfuffle

In light of the pseudo-controversy over those "Glee" GQ photos, a couple of cast members from the show have spoken out. Dianna Agron at the SAG Awards earlier this year. (AP) Dianna Agron -- otherwise known as Quinn Fabray, who flashes some flesh in the GQ spread, albeit not as much as co-star Lea Michele -- posted an apology to her Tumblr blog. "Now, in perpetuating the type of images that evoke these kind of emotions, I am sorry," she writes. "If you are hurt or these photos make you uncomfortable, it was never our intention. And if your eight-year-old has a copy of our GQ cover in hand, again I am sorry. But I would have to ask, how on earth did it get there?" She also notes -- touching on the same subject that I addressed in our first blog post two days ago about the magazine pics...

Going viral: Actor Gordon Pinsent reads Justin Bieber's memoir

(Courtesy HarperCollins) Because we know you, like us, can't get enough Justin Bieber, we feel compelled to remind you that the 16-year-old mega-pop phenom published what will doubtless be only the first of many volumes of his memoirs this month. "Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever" chronicles the Bieb's rise from obscurity (aka Canada) to the top of the pop charts. Yours truly downloaded it to iBooks, purely for research purposes. I didn't at all take to heart the special message from Justin: Every one of you is "My Favorite Girl" for a different reason because each of you is special in your own way. Everywhere I go, whatever I do, I try to connect with as many of you as possible. If you're up front at a concert, I might reach out and hold your hand. If you show up outside the arena after a show, you might...

'Paranormal Activity 2': Reviews start to roll in

"Paranormal Activity 2" has been kept away from the critics. Going viral: Luke Perry at DragonCon

Luke Perry and one of his DragonCon fans. (Image via Buzzfeed) Bless the people at Buzzfeed. They routinely deliver such shareable gems as the 25 Most Embarrassing Pictures of Justin Timberlake, which we dissected here in Celebritology. And today, they've given us another jewel: the 21 Best Portraits of Luke Perry at DragonCon. Perry was a featured guest at the sci-fi/fantasy convention in September and apparently had his picture taken with numerous fans. At least, Buzzfeed seems to think these photos were snapped at DragonCon. Based on the backdrop, they easily could have been captured at a Sears Portrait Studio or on picture day at your local middle school. It's awesome that Perry agreed to do this. But viewed as a collection, there's something undeniably hilarious about these images. Is it the fact that Perry has the same pensive expression on his face in so many of the photos?...

Gwyneth Paltrow to perform at the CMA Awards

You've seen her at the Golden Globe Awards and at the Oscars. But Gwyneth Paltrow isn't generally a regular at the Country Music Association Awards. But she'll be there this year, y'all. Paltrow -- soon to be seen in the Nashville-star-makes-a-comeback drama "Country Strong" -- will perform alongside Vince Gill at the CMA ceremony, to be held in Nashville on Nov. 10, Billboard reports. What will she be singing? "Country Strong." Because that's the theme from the movie. (See video above.) Did we mention that "Country Strong" opens in December in Los Angeles and Nashville -- making it eligible for Oscar consideration -- then releases nationwide in January? Because making sure the public is aware of that information is really the whole point of Paltrow showing up on the CMAs. And we've already told you without anyone singing a single note! Seriously, though, does Paltrow have the twang it...

Glee in GQ, Part Deux: The Parents Television Council does not care for those photos

"Glee" stars, courting controversy on GQ's cover. (Image courtesy of GQ) Not surprisingly, the sexy "Glee" photo shoot in GQ has fired up the Parents Television Council, prompting the conservative watchdog group to issue a news release today chastising the magazine as well as Fox for allowing pictures of a scantily clad Lea Michele, Dianna Agron and (not scantily clad) Cory Monteith to reach the public. “It is disturbing that GQ, which is explicitly written for adult men, is sexualizing the actresses who play high school-aged characters on ‘Glee’ in this way," PTC President Tim Winter is quoted as saying in the release. "It borders on pedophilia. Sadly, this is just the latest example of the overt sexualization of young girls in entertainment." As I noted yesterday, I agree that the pictures are a bit disturbing, partly because -- even though the actresses in question are in their 20s...

Underwear-clad 'spy' Anna Chapman poses on the cover of Russian Maxim

Anna Chapman covers Maxim. (Photo courtesy Maxim) We're pretty sure Vladimir Ilyich Lenin is spinning in his mausoleum, because the first leader of the Soviet Union probably never imagined that the ultimate fruit of his Bolshevik revolution would be supposed spy Anna Chapman striking a pose on the cover of the Russian edition of Maxim dressed only in bra, panties and what appears to be a Walther PPK. The New York Daily News, which managed to access the mag's Web site before it was bombarded with traffic and timed out, provides a translation: "No you are not sleeping and your eyesight is not deceiving you," the Maxim website says in Russian. Snooki jumps on the 'Whip My Hair' bandwagon

You know those annoying blinged-out sunglasses that Snooki ("Jersey Shore's" pouf-wearing smidget) paid a couple of hundred dollars for in Miami? No? Well, anyway, she still has them and sports them in her latest upload to YouTube: her own version or, umm, tribute to Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair." Where the original video (featuring a 9-year-old) was all high concept, this "tribute" (featuring 22-year-old Snooki) is about as low brow as it gets. It seems to have been shot in her bedroom and includes a mini-dog that has every appearance of being a baby fox. Which might explain the whole rabid vibe. Still, we've already watched it four times and defy you to resist it: Related: 'Whip My Hair' and 'Sesame Street': A power ballad* for black hair...

The cast of 'Glee': Too racy in GQ?

The Gleeks, getting it on in GQ. (Image courtesy of GQ) In the latest evidence that the "Glee" hype machine might be starting to spiral out of control, three of its central stars -- Dianna Agron, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith -- have turned on the softcore-porn vibe in a photo shoot for the November issue of GQ. (Oh, and in case you're wondering, the previous most recent evidence of excessive "Glee" hype is the fact that a Rocky Horror "Glee" CD -- the sixth soundtrack in the program's brief history -- is now on sale at a retailer near you.) Look, we're not prudes here at Celebritology. Unlike Sue Sylvester in the "Britney/Brittany" episode, we just looove a quality sex riot. Is Taylor Swift's 'Dear John' about John Mayer?

Taylor Swift. (AP) Mark Twain may have waited 100 years to publish his autobiography in the hopes of avoiding any hurt feelings. Taylor Swift, however, admits that most of the songs on her new album were inspired her own relationship ups and downs. Speculation is running high that one song in particular, "Dear John," is about John Mayer -- 33-year-old singer, ex-Twitter addict, Jennifer Aniston/Jessica Simpson dumper, sometime Swift collaborator and rumored erstwhile boyfriend of the now 20-year-old. The lyrics (read them all after the jump) include some blunt questions -- "Don't you think I was too young/To be messed with" and "Don't you think nineteen's too young/To be played/By your dark, twisted games." -- that may be of particular interest to Mayer and his string of exes. When Swift was asked an equally blunt question -- is the song about Mayer? -- by People magazine, she avoided a...

Rooney Mara becomes Lisbeth Salander

On the left, Mara at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. At right, on set in Sweden. (Photos: Reuters and courtesy rooney-mara.com) Actress Rooney Mara -- most recently spotted as Mark Zuckerberg's articulately irate ex-girlfriend in "The Social Network" -- has undergone a massive transformation as she prepares to take on the role of Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood adaptation of Stieg Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." Although director David Fincher has been keeping Mara under wraps, the fan site rooney-mara.com has published supposed photos of the Salander-ized Mara. Her long honey-blonde locks have been shorn into a severe jet black goth 'do and she's sporting some visible piercings. Yesterday, the New York Post reported that Rooney had undergone some other, umm, non-visible piercings, as well. The paper's sources also report that Mara has been spending most of her time on lockdown in a Swedish hotel room. Mara...

Judy Blume's 'Tiger Eyes' heads to the big screen, prompting the question: Which of her other books should become a movie?

Believe it or not, none of Judy Blume's books has ever been made into a full-scale feature film. Until now.

Paris Hilton done with partying (again); Mel Gibson confirmed for 'Hangover 2'

Paris Hilton. (AP) Paris Hilton says she's done with her partying lifestyle (again). "When you have been going out for so long, the (party) scene gets old, and I'm moving on with my life and on to bigger and better things," Hilton says in a new "interview" posted on Radar Online. Hilton, you'll recall, pleaded guilty on Sept. 20 to drug possession charges after cops found cocaine in her purse during a traffic stop. This isn't the first time Paris has moved on from the party scene. In a 2007 interview, Hilton told Larry King, "I'm frankly sick of [partying]. You know, I've been going out for a long time now. And yes, it's fun, but it's not going to be the mainstay of my life anymore." [Radar Online, CNN] Celebrity Beat: Angelina Jolie welcomed back in Bosnia... Too much too young? Nine-year-old Willow Smith debuts video for "Whip My Hair"

Willow Smith whips her hair back and forth. We know this because she repeats it over and over in her video premiere, "Whip My Hair." The song is catchy, slickly-produced and could easily fit into the pop rotation between Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Though Willow may have a little trouble finding the time to tour since she's only nine-years-old. But, at nine, Willow is the late bloomer of the family. The daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, brother Jaden made his acting debut at age five, before going on to co-star with dad in the "The Pursuit of Happyness" at the tender age of eight and lead a successful reboot of the "Karate Kid" franchise at 12. But is it too much to young? More, including a poll, after the jump... More from Melissa Bell over at BlogPost: 'Whip My Hair' and 'Sesame Street': A power ballad* for black...

'Jackass 3D': Turns out women like it, too

There's just something about a man in uniform. Especially when that man is Johnny Knoxville and he's about to be slammed in the head with a blunt object. Or potentially gored by a bull. Or, turning the tables, about to whack a man carrying a tray of hot soup with a giant hand. On CBS's "Sunday Morning," in the midst of a mostly-scathing review, David Edelstein labeled "Jackass 3D" "anti-feminine." "Most women," Edelstein added, "the ones I associate with, anyway, are appalled that ‘Jackass’ makes me laugh like an idiot and scream at the screen." As you're probably beginning to guess, I don't associate with Edelstein. If I did, he would have to add, "except my friend Liz, who is a woman and apparently gets as much enjoyment out of childish, crude humor as the average guy -- including, but not limited to 'Jackass' and 'that's what she said' jokes."...

David Arquette, Courteney Cox and the PSA that makes no sense

Well this is awkward. Just a week after Courteney Cox and David Arquette revealed the fact that they have been separated for some months, a newish viral video featuring the soon-to-be-exes is circulating online. And, aside from the bad timing, the 1:49 video -- an anti-domestic violence PSA -- is just bizarre. The clip, embedded below, is definitely NSFW -- although no nudity is involved: For those of you who can't watch, here's a summary: Arquette explains that he and his "wife" (see what I mean about awkward?) like to engage in freaky sex acts involving dressing up in head-to-toe bunny costumes. He enters a motel room and proceeds to mimic several lewd sex acts with the bunny he finds already in the room. The door opens. It's another bunny, who pulls off her bunny head to reveal ... Courteney Cox. The remaining bunnies then take off their masks to...

The Scream Awards: A sample is all you get

Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox (minus Einstein the dog) reunite at the Scream Awards. (AP) | PHOTO GALLERY Spike TV's Scream Awards -- an excuse to preview some anticipated upcoming horror and sci-fi movies, as well as resurrect beloved pop cultural phenomena -- took place Saturday night in Los Angeles. And while the trophies themselves may not be terribly meaningful ("Twilight: Eclipse" won for best fantasy film? Crud, there goes my standing in the office pool), the event delivered some notable moments. Among the highlights: a "Back to the Future" reunion featuring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd (to promote the movie's 25th anniversary DVD release, of course); a Jimmy Kimmel-hosted tribute to "Lost," with cast members like Jorge Garcia and Henry Ian Cusick present and accounted for; and Bill Murray, wearing a Ghostbusters ensemble again. Honestly, the sight of Murray with a proton pack is reason enough...

The 'Mad Men' finale: Who the heck is Megan?

"Who is Don Draper?" That question is so out. The of-the-moment "Mad Men" question -- and one we'll probably be asking for the next several months until the show returns to AMC in 2011 -- is "Who the hell is Megan?"

Trending Now: Carrie Fisher did coke on "Empire Strikes Back" set

Fisher (center) as Princess Leia with Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford in the original 'Star Wars.' (Lucasfilm Ltd.) Apparently it's a slow news day because Carrie Fisher's admission that she snorted coke on the set of "The Empire Strikes Back" is trending on Google, just seven days after Fisher told Australian news wire AAP about her on-set drug escapades. "We did cocaine on the set of 'Empire', in the ice planet," said Fisher -- who details her battles with addiction in the one-woman show (and book) "Wishful Drinking." "I didn't even like coke that much, it was just a case of getting on whatever train I needed to take to get high." And although we don't condone drug use of any kind here at Celebritology HQ, we can understand how being forced to wander around an underground bunker being sassed by Han Solo while harboring romantic thoughts for another...

'Jackass 3-D': America, you made it No. 1

"Jackass 3-D" catapults into the tops spot at the box office. (Paramount Pictures) "Jackass 3-D" was far and away the top money-maker at the weekend box office, providing undeniable evidence that Americans love to watch people get hit in the crotch. In other movie news, the aging action stars of "Red" attracted respectable business, "The Social Network" and "Secretariat" dropped off only slightly, a movie you've probably never heard of performed well and so did the latest Matt Damon film in limited release. Find all the details in the weekend box office report....

Bieber Patrol: A bullied Justin Bieber involved in alleged assault

Justin Bieber, a new foot soldier in the anti-bullying campaign. (AP) Justin Bieber, the 16-year-old boy wonder of bubblegum pop and soon-to-be host of a relaunched "Punk'd," was apparently trying to catch a little down time playing laser tag in Canada over the weekend when a 12-year-old boy stepped up and, according to TMZ.com, called the Bieb a "faggot." Things got a bit heated and Bieber was initially investigated for assault for allegedly "pushing" the 12-year-old. But no charges have been lodged against either party and, according to TMZ, Bieber plans to use the incident to lend his support to the anti-bullying campaign. Sources: TMZ, ZackTaylor.ca...

The 'Mad Men' season finale: Is another death on the horizon?

Don Draper, a man whose lucky strikes are running out. (AMC) The fourth season of "Mad Men" comes to a close tonight. After watching a dozen episodes in which, among other things, Don Draper struggled not to dip completely into depression, Joan may (or may not) have aborted a baby she conceived with Roger and a few people have kicked the bucket (RIP Mrs. Blankenship), it seems like the conclusion may drop one or two bombshells. And if some of the theories floating around the Internet right now are to be believed, that could mean more death....
