Five tracks for your Halloween playlist

When most people create a Halloween playlist, they head right to the old, obvious standbys. "Monster Mash." The theme from "Halloween." Michael Jackson's "Thriller." (By the way, feel free to use the video above, or this one, as a resource while preparing your zombie flash mob dance moves.) The classics certainly have their charms. I mean, who among us can resist the funk of 40,000 years? Still, sometimes it's nice to change things up a little. With that in mind, here are five tracks that could serve as fresh alternatives to the usual scary-song suspects on the playlist at your Halloween party....

A new D.C.-set HBO adventure for Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Not content to settle with "30 Rock" cameos as the idealized Liz Lemon (see below), Julia Louis-Dreyfus has signed on with HBO to star in "Veep," a new sitcom in which she'll play the nation's first female vice president. The show will focus on Louis-Dreyfus's character -- fomer Sen. Selina Meyer -- who, according to Deadline.com, discovers being vice president is "nothing like she expected and everything everyone ever warned about." Hilarity, we assume, ensues. The show will be helmed by British writer-director Armando Iannucci, who launched a successful British political satire series, "The Thick of It," that spawned a 2009 feature film spinoff, "In the Loop," starring James Gandolfini. Louis-Dreyfus's last show, "The New Adventures of Old Christine," ended it's five-year run in May. But the "Seinfeld" alumna and, by the way, graduate of Bethesda's Holton-Arms School is already a familiar face at HBO where she spent a season...

Friday List: The laziest Halloween costumes of all time

Related: Halloween Central Just don't. (Image courtesy FastFancyDress) Despite our earlier suggestions, you probably don't want to be the tenth meat-dress-clad Lady Gaga to walk in the room at this year's Halloween fest. But giving up and and relying on any of the 10 tired costume ideas below could be equally frightful. You'll thank us later when you and your vastly superior costumed friends point and laugh at a never-ending parade of witches, cats and Renaissance fair refugees. 1. A Punk: Since the rise of the Sex Pistols, "the punk" has been a go-to choice, somehow outpacing the disco dancer, Southern rock fan and classical music aficionado. But, please, this year leave the fake mohawks, colored hair spray, faux piercings and studded leather collar in the basement where they belong. Suggestion: If you want to send a nod to punk's early-'80s heyday, dress as one of "The Young Ones." Ironic...

A 'Conviction' Q&A with Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank and her onscreen brother, Sam Rockwell, in "Conviction." (Fox Searchlight) HIlary Swank made a quick appearance in the Washington area Thursday to attend a screening of her latest movie, "Conviction," at the Lansdowne, Va., headquarters for the Prison Fellowship, a Christian organization that provides support for prisoners, former prisoners and their families. In the film, currently in limited release and opening more widely today, Swank plays Betty Anne Waters, a Massachusetts single mother who pursues multiple degrees -- including one in law -- while attempting to free her brother Kenny from prison after he is wrongly convicted of murder. Both Waters and the friend who assisted in her nearly two-decade crusade, Abra Rice (portrayed in the movie by Minnie Driver), also participated in the Q&A and received a warm reception from the crowd of roughly 500 Fellowship volunteers, former prisoners and faith-based organizers. Before participating in that...

The Siemens 1924 hearing aid: Apparently the answer to the Charlie Chaplin time travel mystery

The mystery of the alleged time traveler at the 1928 premiere of Charlie Chaplin's "The Circus" has now been solved. As first posited yesterday by a writer at the New York Daily News as well as other bloggers and online commenters, the device in the woman's hand definitely seems to be a 1924 Siemens hearing aid, based on the video below: But some questions remain....

Jessica Simpson pregnant?; PETA offers to pay LiLo's rehab bill

Jessica Simpson earlier this week in California. (Reuters) Rumor Mill: Is Jessica Simpson pregnant? According to the National Enquirer, Simpson, who has put on some noticeable weight in recent months, is expecting her first child with boyfriend Eric Johnson. "Jessica is crazy in love with [Johnson], so they’ve decided to make a baby," a source (who sounds like a 5-year-old) told the Enquirer. Simpson and Johnson, a former NFL player, have been dating since May and Simpson had chalked up her recent weight gain to trouble adjusting to Johnson's vegan diet. The Enquirer also speculated about a potential pregnancy back in September. [The Hollywood Gossip] Celebrity Beat: PETA offers to pay Lindsay Lohan's rehab bill... if she becomes a vegan... Howard K. Stern, Anna Nicole Smith's lawyer/boyfriend, found guilty of conspiracy in her death

Anna Nicole Smith and Howard K. Stern in Oct. 2000. (AP) On Thursday a jury convicted Howard K. Stern, Anna Nicole Smith's longtime lawyer/boyfriend, of consipring to help Smith obtain illegal substances by fraud and giving a false name for a prescription. Smith's psychiatrist, Dr. Khristine Eroshevich, was also found guilty on conspiracy charges and, according to the Associated Press, "convicted on two separate counts of unlawfully prescibing and obtaining Vicodin through fraud and use of a false name." Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, who provided Smith with painkillers including Vicodin, was acquitted of charges that he had prescribed excessive drugs to an addict. "This is not just a victory for me, but for patients everywhere who suffer chronic pain," said Kapoor outside the courthouse. Stern was acquitted of seven of the 11 charges originally lodged against him. Sentencing likely won't happen until January. Source: The Associated Press Related: Anna Nicole...

Aziz Ansari, Alyssa Milano and Kal Penn want you to vote

Aziz Ansari, Alyssa Milano, Kal Penn, Rose McGowan, Ron Livingston and a few other familiar faces (including ex-Rachel Zoe employee Brad Goreski, what?) want you to vote. In a new "Funny or Die" video so fresh it makes reference to the Charlie Sheen hotel incident, they argue that voting only takes 10 minutes and suggest other ways you could (less productively) spend 10 minutes. For instance, this suggestion from Penn: "Give a dog your car keys and try to find them. In the dog's poop.": 10 Minutes from Alyssa Milano...

'The Office's' John Krasinski, also a time traveler?

Update: I've just heard back from the assistant curator from the Statens Museum for Kunst and apparently I misidentified the Carl Adolf Feilberg depicted in the painting. He is not, as it turns out, the Danish-born Australian journalist but a soap and candle maker. "Carl Adolf Feilberg was also born in 1810 and was Købke's brother-in-law," writes assistant curator Line Marie Thorsen. "Feilberg established Falkonergaardens Fabrikker (The Factories of Falkonergaarden) in 1842, where soap and candles were produced and as far as we know, he died in 1896." So there you have it. Still beats beet farming. -- Friday, Oct. 29, 9:44 a.m. ET ---- Karl Adolf Feilberg or "The Office's" John Krasinski? (Courtesy of Statens Museum for Kunst) Speaking of time travelers, here's another report from the flux capacitor department. Why Linus and, to a lesser extent, Lucy are the only members of the Peanuts gang to be trusted in 'It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown'

Forget Charlie Brown. Linus Van Pelt is the member of the Peanuts gang who puts up with the most unnecessary abuse. Just watch "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" -- which, as it happens, airs tonight at 8 p.m. on ABC -- and make a list of how many times the kid gets screamed at or called a blockhead or threatened with legal action simply because he chooses to spend his Halloween night in a pumpkin patch. Back in 1966, when this special first aired, they called that delusional. Now we'd probably laud Linus for being eco-conscious, getting back to nature and showing his support for the local food movement. Honestly, the only two Charles M. Schulz-created characters who can be trusted on any level in this half-hour animated classic are the Van Pelt children. Everyone else's behavior is borderline reprehensible....

Marie Claire's Maura Kelly: Should she be fired for "fatty" comments?

A screengrab from Maura Kelly's now-defunct (but cached) Facebook fan page. Should Maura Kelly, the Marie Claire blogger at the center of a [expletive]-storm over a blog post in which she expressed her distate at watching fat people get affectionate on TV, lose her job? In case you missed the original story, Kelly drew fire earlier this week when she wrote on her Marie Claire blog that she would be, "grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other...I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything." Kelly was making reference to the new CBS show "Mike & Molly," which features two plus-size leads who meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. But given the recent dismissal of Juan Williams from NPR for making derogatory comments about Muslims on the "Bill O'Reilly Show," should Kelly also get the...

Was a time traveler captured in footage of a Charlie Chaplin movie premiere?

Is it possible that other people besides Marty McFly and Doc Brown have made use of the flux capacitor? A Belfast filmmaker named George Clarke thinks so, based on footage from the 1928 premiere of Charlie Chaplin's "The Circus," where a woman can be seen talking on what appears to be a cellphone. The only explanation, one he acknowledges sounds kind of ridiculous: she's a time traveler. Clarke stumbled upon video of the woman -- who, for the record, he also suspects may be a man in drag -- while watching the DVD extras for "The Circus." In the YouTube video above, which has gone viral in recent days, he says he showed the clip at a film festival in Belfast and 100 people were also convinced that, yes, this mysterious lady in the hat must have come from the future and somehow cruised by Grauman's Chinese Theatre while...

Mariah Carey confirms pregnancy

Parents to be Carey (left) and Cannon. (AP) This morning in a pre-taped interview on "Today," Mariah Carey admitted to "Access Hollywood's" Billy Bush that she is indeed expecting a baby with husband Nick Cannon. "It's still early," said Carey. "We're expecting in the spring. I don't want to give too much of the specifics." And despite speculation that Carey, 41, had undergone in vitro fertilization, she tells Bush that the couple conceived naturally and haven't yet found out whether they're expecting a girl or a boy. Carey and Cannon also opened up for the first time about a miscarriage that Carey had in the early days of their marriage. A People.com article published as the interview hit the airwaves details the recent rumors about Carey's pregnancy: In August, Carey fanned the flames by stepping out in Brazil wearing a maternity dress. She quickly addressed the ensuing frenzy, explaining...

Jon Hamm and Kenan Thompson bring the funny in new 'SNL' promos

Jon Hamm will be returning to "Saturday Night Live" for the third time to take on the hosting role this weekend. In the three promo clips embedded below, Hamm and Kenan Thompson make with the yuks. Update: Charlie Sheen calls story 'overblown and overplayed'

Sheen (right) and Jennifer Grey in 1986's “Ferris Bueller's Day Off.” (Image courtesy of Paramount Pictures) Charlie Sheen is calling reports that he trashed a New York hotel room after doing coke with a prostitute "overblown and overplayed." [Insert joke here.] Realizing that he needed to get out in front of a quickly snowballing story, Sheen did the next best thing to tweeting about it; he sent a text message to a RadarOnline editor reading, in part: "Oh my man, I'm fine. The story is totally overblown and overplayed as far as the reality of the scenario. I know what went down and that's where it will stay ... under wraps." Which obviously means that whatever happened was utterly innocent or maybe Sheen was the victim of a diabolical conspiracy plot, possibly involving a Russian sleeper cell tasked with destroying the credibility of a beloved TV veteran with a...

As the final season of 'Friday Night Lights' begins, a salute to the characters we'll miss most

Clear eyes, full hearts, no DirecTV. That's the sad situation many "Friday Night Lights" fans find themselves in today, as the final season of the best sort-of-about-football show ever begins tonight, but only for subscribers of the satellite service. Everyone else has to wait until the spring, when NBC will air the Dillon drama's swan song. Whether you actually can tune in to the season premiere or will just have to live vicariously through the TV Club conversations over at Slate, it seemed wrong to let this moment pass without a salute to the program that dared to consistently give us characters who want, above all else, to do the right thing. In that spirit, here's a list of the five "Friday Night Lights" characters I'll miss the most when the series finally comes to a close....

Rumor Mill: Justin Timberlake steps out on Jessica Biel, according to Us Weekly

Breaking breathless news: Justin Timberlake cheated on girlfriend Jessica Biel with the almost interchangeable Olivia Munn in September. At least according to Us Weekly. In the latest issue, Us reports that Timberlake and Munn, a "Daily Show" correspondent, met at a MySpace event (yes, apparently MySpace still exists and has the money to throw lavish Manhattan parties that attract the likes of Justin Timberlake and Olivia Munn), proving once and for all that social networking is merely an elaborate ruse designed to assist superstars in cheating on their actress/model girlfriends. Apparently the two met, hit it off and exchanged phone numbers. This is where Us's report veers into sordid territory: Munn resisted [Timberlake's] advances, telling him it was a no-go if he was still with Biel, 28, the source tells Us Weekly. But Timberlake "has been telling people it’s over with Jessica, even though "the reality is he's just...

'Avatar' sequels official and 'Dark Knight Rises' revealed as title for next Batman movie

"Avatar" now officially a franchise, and that "Dark Knight." He's slated to rise. (Fox/Warner Bros.) Two big pieces of movie sequel news to share today. Fox announced that "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3" are definitely a go and that James Cameron will focus on the pair of Na'vi sequels as his next official project, The Wrap reported. Cameron had already more or less confirmed that he plans to do the sequels -- in our conversation over the summer, he talked about how his a recent visit to Brazil might shape his narrative plans for the next "Avatar" films -- but today's news provides definitive confirmation. It will be a while before we see them, though: the first of the two sequels won't release until December 2014, with the third movie to follow the next year. The scripts are not finished yet, but production is already slated to begin next...

Is Justin Bieber wearing makeup? Do we care?

(Image courtesy Todateen) A few years back Justin Bieber was busking on a street in Canada. Now he's launching branded products lines (nail polish and a unisex fragrance), written a gushy, photo-filled memoir and is on tap to host a reincarnated "Punk'd" for MTV. He's also, this week, appearing on the cover of Brazilian teen mag Todateen in what appears to be lipstick and totally smoked out eyes. That, coupled with the strategically mussed mop top gives Bieber more the air of a young Natalie Portman or Hilary Swank than, umm, a young Justin Bieber. But did he really wear makeup for the shoot? Since I don't speak or read Portuguese I asked my friend Genilson Brandao, possibly D.C.'s best-dressed resident and originally from Brazil, to translate the accompanying text....

The alleged scene inside Charlie Sheen's Plaza hotel room in a photo obtained by TMZ. Apparently what happens in New York stays in New York. Charlie Sheen, whose most recent escapade involved a trashed New York hotel room and a visit to the hospital, will return to work this week, according to his manager. Rumor Mill: Charlie Sheen partied with cocaine, prostitute before police showed up

Sheen was reportedly visiting New York with ex-wife Denise Richards and their children. (AP) Charlie Sheen is on his way back to California via private jet after being hospitalized for either a) acute intoxication or b) an allergic reaction, depending on whom you ask. TMZ.com reports that the troubled TV star was eight days away from completing probation on a domestic violence conviction when police found Sheen naked and intoxicated in a trashed hotel suite. Now the New York Post is reporting that Sheen had been drinking and "snorting cocaine with a prostitute" before tearing apart his room at the Plaza Hotel in an apparent search for a missing wallet. But a rep for Sheen told Fox News the actor "had an adverse allergic reaction to some medication and was taken to the hospital, where [he] is expected to be released tomorrow." 'Tron: Legacy': The Daft Punk clip

Daft Punk is playing in the new "Tron: Legacy" trailer. And while that may sound like the basis for an LCD Soundsystem song, it's actually just the honest truth about the latest "Tron" clip. As promised, 'Walking Dead' zombies in D.C.

As we warned yesterday, zombies did indeed "attack" this morning in D.C., as part of a global promotional push for AMC's "Walking Dead," which premieres Sunday night on the cable network. Okay, so zombies didn't attack so much as meander around. Still, watch the video above to see the undead traipse through the nation's capital, semi-scaring the natives and hanging out in front of a Dress Barn. (I always knew that's where zombies would shop!) Happily -- or sadly, depending on your perspective -- no brains were consumed as a result of this publicity stunt....

Catching up with Lea Thompson as 'Back to the Future' celebrates its 25th anniversary

Lea Thompson, clearly pining for Calvin Klein, aka Marty McFly, in "Back to the Future." (Universal) It's possible to look at Lea Thompson and immediately think: "Caroline in the City." There's also a chance that, for some, her face is most likely to conjure memories of Amanda Jones, the high school hottie that belonged to Hardy Jenns in "Some Kind of Wonderful." But to most people, Lea Thompson will forever be Lorraine Baines/McFly, the mother of Marty McFly who, without realizing it, totally puts the moves on a time-travel version of her own son in "Back to the Future." With all the attention on the new DVD/Blu-ray release and the movie's 25th anniversary -- perhaps you caught Thompson this morning, reminiscing with fellow cast and crew members on the "Today" show -- Thompson has been making the promotional rounds. I spoke with her late last week via telephone, while...

Randy and Evi Quaid remain in Canadian jail

Update: Despite earlier reports that they had been released on bail, Randy and Evi Quaid will remain locked up -- safe from "star whackers" (see below) -- in a Vancouver jail until a hearing scheduled for Thursday. "They remain in detention," Canada Borders Services Agency spokesman Shakila Manzoor told the Globe and Mail newspaper late Monday. She did not detail why the couple was held despite a hearing last week in which they were cleared for release on $10,000 bail each. In other news, officials at the City of Vancouver animal shelter confirmed that a puppy traveling with the Quaids has been taken to an animal shelter. Rachael Leigh Cook, firmly anti-PhotoShop; Taylor Momsen flashes concert crowd

Rachael Leigh Cook, firmly anti-PhotoShop: Rachael Leigh Cook says she's "up in arms" about the idealized airbrushed and PhotoShopped images of celebs plastered on the pages of magazines. The 31-year-old actress is joining forces with Geena Davis, Girl Scouts of America and the Creative Coalition to raise awareness of body image issues for young women. Earlier this month Cook, Davis and other stars -- including Alfre Woodard, Steven Weber and Teri Polo -- met in D.C. to discuss how to promote healthier body images for women. "I did not grow up getting told about how manipulated the images we see of women and girls out there are," Cook told Fox News, "and I think it's an absolute travesty that young women are seeing what the media is feeding them. It breaks my heart to be part of an industry and part of a machine that really pushes out these images...

Rumor Mill: Taylor Swift dating Jake Gyllenhaal

Gyllenhaal (left) and Swift. (Photos: AP, Getty Images) Someone should warn Jake Gyllenhaal that Taylor Swift writes scathing songs about her exes because, according to People magazine, Swift (20) and Gyllenhaal (29) spent the weekend "laughing, eating and strolling together in New York City." Swift reportedly showed up for the taping of "Saturday Night Live" -- pal Emma Stone was hosting -- with Gyllenhaal in tow. The next day, the couple was spotted brunching in Brooklyn and strolling around the family-friendly Park Slope neighborhood. So obviously they are totally ready to settle down and procreate. Gyllenhaal split from Reese Witherspoon last November, though he reportedly tried to win her back with $75,000 worth of vintage dinnerware. Swift has, in the past year or so, dated Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner and -- as we recently learned -- John Mayer. Source: People.com Related: Gallery: Swift's transition to pop stardom...

10 things we learned from 'Back to the Future'

Those who have a firm grasp of their "Back to the Future" mythology already know what tomorrow is: Oct. 26, a date that marks the first time Marty McFly traveled back in time in the 1985 movie, otherwise known as the greatest flux capacitor film ever made. To get a jump-start on what clearly should be a government holiday, I put together a list of the 10 things that this beloved time travel saga taught us -- about life, ourselves and the awe-inspiring powers of 1.21 gigawatts. More "Back to the Future" goodness -- including my review of the 25th anniversary "Back to the Future" trilogy DVD and Blu-ray box set that releases Tuesday and an interview with "Future" star Lea Thompson -- will appear tomorrow in Celebritology. Because -- "Hello, McFly?" -- one can never have too much Hill Valley, Huey Lewis or clock tower-saving in their lives....

Katy Perry and Russell Brand marry in India

Russell Brand and the suddenly camera shy Katy Perry arrive in India last Wednesday. (AP) Photo Gallery: Brand and Perry marry The wedding of two B-list stars somehow makes for A-list news, which explains why I'm writing this post about the weekend nuptials of saucy pop songstress Katy Perry and ribald, hirsute British comedian Russell Brand. The bride wore a dove gray Elie Saab gown for the traditional Hindu ceremony, which took place in a tiger sanctuary in the state of Rajasthan. According to one PO'd public official, Russty may have violated a number of local laws and noise ordinances between the revelry and the scuffles between photogs and security guards. According to E! News: An inquiry into the debacle has been ordered by the state government and, should further questioning be required, they could possibly detain Brand, Perry, the wedding guests and organizers of the event. Should they...

Kanye West debuts 'Runaway' movie: We watch and recap

Kanye West debuted his high-concept movie -- he directed and stars in it -- on Saturday on MTV. It was written by Hype Williams and stars supermodel Selita Ebanks as a phoenix/supermodel. You can either watch the slightly NSFW 34 minute "film," below, or read my scene-by-scene recap, which begins beneath the player. Both experiences will, I hope, be transformative: A phoenix lands in a fiery ball in the midst of a luxury car commercial set to a song from Kanye West's upcoming album, in which he rhymes "Kings of Leon" with "Celine Dion." The phoenix is -- surprise -- a scantily clad supermodel who wakes up on a Louis XIV settee in Kanye's house. In front of her is a large flat-screen TV tuned in to the news. Kanye, remote in hand, says "First thing you learn in this world, baby -- don't pay attention to anything you see...

Oscars 2011: With three months until nomination day, who's got buzz?

Javier Bardem, a possible (key word: possible) Oscar contender in "Biutiful." (Focus Features) | VIEW OSCAR CONTENDER SLIDESHOW The Academy Award nominations won't be announced until Jan. 25, exactly three months from today. To the average movie fan, that suggests it's way too soon to be thinking about who might get nominated this year. But to Oscar watchers -- the Hollywood version of obsessive fantasy football leaguers who marinate their minds in expert predictions, awards-season blogs and Excel spreadsheets devoted to tracking which films have been honored by various critics' associations -- this is precisely the time to start imagining who the 2011 statuette holders might be. With that in mind, I've put together a slideshow that considers the potential contenders in the acting categories who currently are riding on the strongest buzz, based on what I've read on some of those aforementioned awards-season blogs and Web sites, my...

Baby boom: Matt Damon, Celine Dion welcome babies (not together)

Matt Damon and wife Luciana. (AP) Both Celine Dion and Matt Damon announced new additions to their respective families over the weekend. Dion gave birth to fraternal twin boys Saturday at St. Mary's Medical Center in Palm Beach, Fla. The Canadian chanteuse had been trying for years to have more children with husband/manager Rene Angelil and learned she was pregnant after her sixth in vitro attempt. They already had one son, nine-year-old Rene-Charles. A statement from Dion's medical team details the cesarean birth, the babies' birth weights (5lbs 10 ounces and 5 pounds 4 ounces) and, oddly, adds: "It should be known worldwide that this team agrees that Celine and Rene are clearly one of the most caring and kind individuals that they have ever cared for." We always thought they were one person. No names have been released yet, but we're pulling for Prince Michael I and II....

Weekend box office: 'Paranormal Activity 2' dominates with $41.5 million

"Paranormal Activity 2" frightens the "Jackass 3-D" pranksters out of the top spot at the box office and outdoes its predecessor in terms of opening revenue. But a supernatural movie of a different nature -- "Hereafter" -- doesn't fare nearly as well. All the details -- and the opportunity to predict the Halloween weekend winner -- in this week's box office rundown....
