Emma Stone officially cast in Spider-Man movie ... but not as MJ

By Jen Chaney

Emma Stone: Just call her Gwen Stacy. (CTMG Inc.)

As of Monday -- based on a report on -- it looked like Emma Stone was poised to be cast in the next Spider-Man movie as Mary Jane Watson. Well, that information was half right.

Columbia Pictures has officially announced that Stone will star in the film, but as Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's first love in the comics. The Hollywood Reporter says that Stacy will take on the key female role in this first installment of the Spider-man reboot, with Watson -- who was previously played by Kirsten Dunst -- resurfacing later.

Of course, I thought Stone would be a natural for Watson because, like the character, she appears to be a redhead. (Stacy, on the other hand, is a blonde in the comic books.) Apparently that's not right either.

"Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blond," Spidey director Marc Webb says in a statement quoted by THR.

So just to recap: Mary Jane Watson, a redhead in the comics, was played by the (at least seemingly) blond Kirsten Dunst in the previous Spider-Man movies. And Stacy, a blonde in the comics, was played in "Spider-Man 3" by the decidedly auburn-haired Bryce Dallas Howard, and will now be played by Stone, who's always appeared to be a red head but is actually a blonde. Okay. Got it.

I've always thought Gwyneth Paltrow would be the perfect Gwen Stacey, but she might have aged out of that role. Cameron Diaz would be good as well.

I don't know, just looking at that picture in the post, she'd be a shoe in for the Hobgoblin. (Kidding Ms. Stone, in fact, I'd even be willing to take you out to dinner to make up for that remark)
