Idris Elba gets a new 'Ghost' gig; Sam Raimi on for 'Oz'; and a fundraiser to break up Weezer?

By Jen Chaney

Three pop culture stories on our radar this afternoon ...

1. Elba to become a monk: Actually, to be more specific, Idris Elba is going to become an "alcoholic warrior monk." And to be even more specific, that's a description of the character he has signed on to play in "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," the upcoming "Ghost Rider" sequel that may have just gotten slightly more enticing now that Elba is involved. Slightly. [Entertainment Weekly]

2. Great, powerful and Raimi: Director Sam Raimi has officially signed on to direct "Oz, The Great and Powerful," a "Wizard of Oz" spin-off that focuses more directly on the man behind the curtain. Robert Downey Jr. is rumored as the actor of choice to take on the role of the wizard but hasn't committed to it yet. While Raimi waits for Downey to make up his mind, perhaps the director can come up with a more evocative title for the film, one that borrows from his past projects. "Drag Me to Oz"? How about "Army of Munchkins"? [New York Magazine's Vulture]

3. Can $10 million stop Weezer? A Seattle man named James Burns clearly hopes so. He's spearheaded a campaign to pay the members of the band Weezer $10 million to break up. (Oddly, this is a lot like that time Liz and I tried to pay Color Me Badd eight bucks to go away, which they wound up doing anyway ... and for free!) Apparently the dude is tired of watching fans of Rivers Cuomo and co. get progressively more disappointed with every CD release. On his Twitter feed, Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson pledged to do the "deluxe break-up" if the campaign raises $20 million. [New York Times' Arts Beat blog]

Bonus link: If you've seen "Let Me In," check out this deleted scene from the film.

Bonus video: Jane Lynch, making us love her all the more in promos for her hosting gig on "Saturday Night Live."
