Oscars 2011: With three months until nomination day, who's got buzz?

By Jen Chaney

The Academy Award nominations won't be announced until Jan. 25, exactly three months from today. To the average movie fan, that suggests it's way too soon to be thinking about who might get nominated this year.

But to Oscar watchers -- the Hollywood version of obsessive fantasy football leaguers who marinate their minds in expert predictions, awards-season blogs and Excel spreadsheets devoted to tracking which films have been honored by various critics' associations -- this is precisely the time to start imagining who the 2011 statuette holders might be.

With that in mind, I've put together a slideshow that considers the potential contenders in the acting categories who currently are riding on the strongest buzz, based on what I've read on some of those aforementioned awards-season blogs and Web sites, my conversations with fellow film journalists and my personal take on the films I've seen so far.

Take a look at that, then feel free to vote in the poll below, which asks you to rank the following movies in order from most likely to least likely to get a Best Picture nomination. Given that the Oscar race is an ever-evolving entity, things will undoubtedly shift between now and nomination day. So while this may be one of our first Celebritology conversations about this year's Academy Awards, it won't be the last.

right now, looks like folks are voting for which is the best movie, rather than which is likely to get a nom. two different things, kids.

Somewhere in DC, Jen Chaney is singing to herself: "I am rubber, you are glue..."

I don't thnk it opens until this Friday, but I'm going to have to give a nod to "Conviction" for noms for Best pic, Best actress, and Best Actor. This movie reads like Erin Brockovich with Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell -- the Academy does love them some Swank, and Rockwell is no slouch.

How can people vote for films as "nomination worthy" when they couldn't possibly have seen them yet as many of them haven't been released yet? Hmmmmm. Head scratcher.
