'Walking Dead' zombies to invade D.C. and other cities

By Jen Chaney

Zombies may invade your Tuesday morning commute. And not just the regular-people-who-haven't-had-their-coffee-yet kind.

As a promotion for AMC's soon-to-debut TV series "Walking Dead," zombies are going to "invade" several major cities around the globe, including (among others) New York, Chicago, Los Angeles. London, Hong Kong, Munich and (yes) Washington, D.C. The "attack" here in the nation's capital will take place around 7 a.m. on the Lincoln Memorial.

And by "attack," we mean a publicity stunt involving multiple people dressed as zombies walking near the memorial and Ohio Drive. Which means you get all the awesomeness involved in seeing live zombies, with none of the fatalities.

If it's "brains" the zombies are seeking to feast upon here in DC, they sure as heck won't find any!

Sigh...yet ANOTHER traffic-clogged morning nightmare - literally. Zombies go home! And DC - OPEN UP OHIO DRIVE ALREADY!

As the author of a book about panic radio broadcasts, Waging the War of the Worlds, I find myself more than a little concerned at this. just hope that those behind this stunt are taking precautions to ensure people are aware that this is just publicity for a TV series. It would be dangerous in the extreme to assume that everyone will instantly get the joke. They didn't in 1938 when Orson Welles unleashed his Martian invasion, and they didn't this year in Georgia when a TV station faked a 2nd Russian invasion, nor a month later in Jordan when a newspaper reported on an alien invasion! This could get real ugly, and I'm not just talking about the Zombies.

Wow. I was walking into work this morning, no joke listening to the audiobook World War Z, when I walked out of the local bagel shop on Connecticut to see 8 zombies heading right for me less than 20 feet away. For a split second I actually looked to see if they were attacking people! Pretty amusing way to start the day.
