Judge denies Wesley Snipes appeal, orders him to report to prison

Wesley Snipes, ordered to serve. (AP) Post updated at 7:10 p.m. EST; originally published at 3:40 p.m. EST Wesley Snipes may be going to jail. After a lengthy attempt to appeal his 2008 conviction on three counts of failure to file income taxes -- one that included a motion for a new trial -- U.S. District Court Judge William T. Hodges has issued a 17-page order that says the "Blade" star must surrender to authorities and serve his three-year prison sentence. Using a pair of e-mails from jurors as evidence, Snipes's defense team had attempted to argue, among other things, that the actor did not receive a fair trial because some members of the jury presumed his guilt. It's unclear whether another appeal might be attempted; e-mails seeking comment from one of Snipes's lawyers and his publicist have not been returned. Update: In response to that request for comment,...

Harry Potter: A tribute to some outstanding fans

Harry Potter fans are a passionate group, the sort of people who own versions of J.K. Rowling's books in multiple languages, wear those funny round spectacles to midnight screenings of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" and who can carry on extensive conversations about horcruxes and deluminators. We love them for that. But for various reasons, some Gryffindor obsessives stand out more than others. For example, we kind of loved the fan who completely stole the thunder last night from Conan O'Brien during his opening monologue. (The takeover happens at around the 2:55 mark.) But he is merely one of many lovable Potter-philes featured on the Web. Here's a tribute to a few more of our favorites, complete with online videos that demonstrate the degree of their Dumbledorean devotion....

Just in time for Kelly Preston's new addition, Scientology explains silent birth

John Travolta and Kelly Preston. (Getty Images) Kelly Preston and John Travolta are basically moments away from the birth of a new baby. Joyous news that -- more than anything -- kicks the wacky rumors surrounding Scientology's (both Preston and Travolta are long-time adherents to the belief system) so-called "silent births" into hyperdrive. "The couple will follow the church's guidelines during delivery," a family insider allegedly told PopEater's Rob Shuter. "No music, no talking and no screaming will be allowed during the pains of labor. Also their new son cannot be prodded for medical tests or spoken to for the first seven days of his life. You don't want to do anything that will haunt them for the rest of their lives." For reals?...

Alec Baldwin: Paid to like Wegmans

Update: Thanks to syracuse.com for filling in more details. The woman appearing beside Baldwin in the ads is in fact his mother. And while Baldwin was paid for his cameos, he donated his fees to the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, an organization that is -- yes -- named after his mom, a breast cancer survivor. -- 3:38 p.m. ET ---- In a career move that is slightly less bizarre than William Shatner's ads for local law firms, Alec Baldwin has popped up in two new commercials for supermarket chain Wegmans. The ads appear to be legit, though Baldwin -- as ever -- delivers lines that seem to be ripped both from the pages of a "30 Rock" script and the mouth of his character, Jack Donaghy. To promote the store's $6 meal platters (which, to this writer, look as if they've been baking under a high school...

Kate Middleton's engagement announcement dress sells out

Kate, with Prince William, in her Issa London frock. (AP) Well, this is a nice change for conspicuous blue dresses. The royal (ahem) blue dress Kate Middleton wore when she and Britain's Prince William made their engagement public on Tuesday sold out within 24 hours, according to British Vogue. Brazilian-born designer Daniella Issa Helayel, whose dress retails for about $617 depending on the current exchange rate at London's Harvey Nichols, is apparently one of the princess-to-be's favorite designers. "Since the announcement of the royal engagement we have been inundated with requests regarding Issa," Harvey Nichols' buying director Averyl Oates told British Vogue. "The dress worn by Kate sold out almost immediately. Issa is one of our best selling brands and the versatility of the pieces mean that they can be dressed down for the day and dressed up for special occasions." A similar, yet multicolored, version is available stateside...

Christian Bale in Esquire: Should his attitude cost him an Oscar?

Christian Bale, a "Fighter" in Esquire. (Reuters file photo) Christian Bale is undeniably a phenomenal actor. But the celebrity thing? Well, he doesn't care for that so much. In an interview with Esquire magazine that recently arrived online and will appear in the magazine's December issue, Bale makes it clear just how much he hates the entire interview, movie promotion and general talking-about-himself process that his career often requires. Steve Pond of The Wrap is already asking if this attitude could cost him an Oscar nomination for "The Fighter." But really, should it? Before delving into that question, let's provide a little taste of that interview....

The 'Harry Potter' leak: Can it really harm the 'Deathly Hallows' box office performance?

Harry, Ron and Hermione, poised to conquer the box office. (Warner Bros.) View 'Harry Potter' photo gallery The leak of the first 36 minutes of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" onto various downloadable sites has prompted Warner Bros. to launch an inquiry into how, exactly, the footage got online. As the Guardian reports, the studio contends the footage was stolen and posted on the Web illegally and -- with all the conviction of a young wizard attempting to defeat his noseless nemesis -- the studio is determined to get to the bottom of this. "This constitutes a serious breach of copyright violation and theft of Warner Bros property," the studio said in a statement. "We are working actively to restrict and/or remove copies that may be available. Also, we are vigorously investigating this matter and will prosecute those involved to the full extent of the law."...

'Cowboys & Aliens' trailer hits the Web: Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig and ETs; What's not to like?

Harrison Ford's performance in "Cowboys & Aliens" may just redeem him for some or all of these things: a) Starring opposite Diane Keaton in "Morning Glory," b) dissing Han Solo, and/or c) His over-affected appearance on Tuesday night's "Conan." A trailer was released online Wednesday and, among other things, the clip makes it abundantly clear that the movie is not an inter-galactic take on "Brokeback Mountain." Instead, a smoking Daniel Craig (who out-hots Ryan Reynolds even on his bad hair days) plays a cowboy who was abducted by aliens and returns to earth apparently having forgotten he's an outlaw. Harrison Ford comes into the picture as the law. And, if this thing is going where the trailer leads, the outlaw and, umm, inlaw join forces to battle aliens. Think of it as "High Noon" meets "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." "The footage shown at Comic-Con promised whiz-bang special effects,"...

Rumor Mill: Erin Barry revealed as Tony Parker's alleged mistress

Tony Parker and Eva Longoria with Erin and Brent Barry. (Photo courtesy Extra) In the soap opera that has become Eva Longoria's life, we can now cast "the other woman." According to TMZ.com, Longoria's husband -- Tony Parker -- was carrying on an affair with Erin Barry, the wife of San Antonio Spur Brent Barry. The Barrys are reportedly in the middle of a divorce and TMZ managed to snag an interview with Barry's father, NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry, who said: "I feel horrible for my son. I'm in shock. I knew [Erin] was moving out of the house soon and SHE was the one that filed for divorce. This is the straw that broke the camel's back." Rick added, "[Brent] is going to be devastated. I can't even imagine him going through this ... the divorce was hard enough news." Longoria filed for divorce on Wednesday...

GQ appreciates men, too, and not one of them is Ryan Reynolds

People may like Ryan Reynolds, but according to the editors at GQ, James Franco -- star of "127 Hours" and "General Hospital," artist, perennial student and unabashed cross-dresser -- is the "Leading Man of the Year." The mag -- which named Scarlett Johannson "Babe of the Year" in the same issue -- also feted Jeff Bridges as "Icon of the Year," Stephen Colbert as "Patriot of the Year" and Drake as "Breakout of the Year." And in case we hadn't already hammered home this point today, ScarJo is in fact married to People's pick, Reynolds. Source: GQ...

Eva Longoria files for divorce from Tony Parker

Eva Longoria and husband Tony Parker in September. (Reuters) In a successful bid to force me to write about the same thing three times in less than 24 hours, Eva Longoria apparently really truly did file for divorce today from husband Tony Parker. The "Desperate Housewives" star filed divorce documents citing "irreconcilable differences" for the split in Los Angeles, according to People. The magazine's Web site also reports that Longoria and Parker have a prenuptial agreement in place and that Longoria is seeking spousal support from Parker. TMZ has already posted the docs online (launches a PDF), but there aren't really any additional details worth the download. Neither the docs nor Longoria have addressed rumors that Parker has been unfaithful and that Longoria had discovered her husband was exchanging text messages with "a mutual female friend" for nearly a year, according to Us. Justin Bieber dolls hit store shelves

Justin Bieber, in doll form. (Justinbiebertoys.com) As Jen wrote back in September, Justin Bieber is a doll. Literally. The tween heart throb, like all real stars, was immortalized in action figure form by not one, but two, different toy companies. As it turns out, the fate of the holiday retail season may be riding on the plastic shoulders of the millions of Justin Bieber dolls hitting store shelves RIGHT NOW. The Post's Ylan Q. Mui reports that the Bieb doll -- based on sales so far -- is red hot: [One company] placed a rush order this summer for roughly a million Bieber dolls to hit store shelves in time for the holiday season. Toys R Us predicted demand would be so great that it flew the dolls in from Asia, rather than wait for them to arrive by boat. The dolls landed in stores earlier this month and...

Kate Middleton, Internet it girl

Kate Middleton, in hat, in 2006. (AP) Now that the engagement of Prince William to girlfriend Kate Middleton has officially been announced, curiosity about the woman formerly known as "Waity Katie" has hit an all-time high on the Web. Wednesday morning, search terms focused on Middleton were among the top 10 Google searches. What is it people are so desperate to know about Middleton? Could it be speculation about her engagement ring (it was, in fact, Diana's) or her potential wedding dress? Nah. As of early this morning, the searching was mostly banal and somewhat, well, carnal. So. In the interest of satisfying the Kate curious in one mega-blog post that will undoubtedly blow the top off Google search, Celebritology will list the top Kate Middleton search terms and provide links, photos, answers -- in short, satisfaction. This post is likely to bring the Internet to a grinding halt....

Ryan Reynolds named People's 'Sexiest Man Alive'

(Courtesy People magazine) Hot on the heels of his "Green Lantern" trailer release, Ryan Reynolds has been named People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive." Which will come as a relief to GQ's 2010 "Babe of the Year": Reynolds's wife Scarlett Johannson. Reynolds beat out a host of easy on the eyes dudes, including the guy who 32 percent of Celebritology readers predicted would walk away with the title: "Mad Men's" Jon Hamm. Hamm is indeed on the list along with Jon Bon Jovi, Drake, "True Blood's" Joe Manganiello, "Vampire Diaries" (and "Lost alum) Ian Somerhalder and -- wait for it -- Conan O'Brien. In the interview celebrating his sexiness, Reynolds bantered about life with the title -- both at home with Johannson and in conversations with random strangers. (We're sure he has a lot of those.) "Now it's going to be, 'Sexiest man, take out the garbage.' That does sound...

Gwyneth Paltrow, 'Glee' and why the mocking of her insouciance must end

The Internet could not exist without a little snark. It's the sarcastic, sometimes borderline obnoxious engine that makes the entire blogosphere run. And when it comes to celebrities, there are few glamorous types that Web commenters enjoy flinging snark at more than Gwyneth Paltrow. Of course, that includes readers and commenters right here in Celebritology, where expressing outrage over the insouciance of Ms. Paltrow, her "insufferable" Goop suggestions and her general, alleged prissy pants-ness has become something of a pastime. Here's the thing, though: I think the era of hating on Gwyneth Paltrow might be over. At the very least, a lengthy moratorium should probably be issued. Because with her appearance tonight on "Glee" -- a preview of which can be viewed below, via Gwyneth's version of Cee-Lo's "Forget You" -- Paltrow's mission to charm the American public may be complete....

Rumor Mill: Eva Longoria denies she's divorcing Tony Parker

Eva Longoria and husband Tony Parker in September. (Reuters) [Originally posted at 4:02 p.m. ET. Updated to reflect denial from Longoria.] On the very day we had the announcement of a royal wedding in our near future, Eva Longoria is denying (through a rep) that she and husband Tony Parker are headed for divorce court. Earlier today, TMZ reported that Parker filed for divorce in Texas on Monday, though a rep for the couple refused to give any information -- affirmative or negative to E! News. TMZ later updated its story with an official denial from the Longoria-Parker camp. Longoria recently hosted the MTV Europe Awards and was scheduled, but has since canceled, to appear at Saturday's taping of Anderson Cooper's "Heroes of 2010" special for CNN. We'll post more details if and when they are available. Sources: TMZ, E! News...

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1': Five things that may surprise you

You-know-who, up to no good in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." (Warner Bros. via AP) | View 'Harry Potter' photo gallery After a screening last night of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" -- a film that Post critic Ann Hornaday will officially review later this week -- I did a little math. And I realized that, factoring in last night's feature, I have now spent 895 minutes of my life watching Harry Potter movies. And that doesn't even include the moments I spent watching the DVDs. That's 15 hours, people. I could have taken 89.5 showers with those minutes, or gone to L.A. and back 1.5 times, or watched the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy almost one-and-two-thirds times. Needless to say, that mammoth total surprised me. And it wasn't the only thing that came as a mini-shock during my "Deathly Hallows" experience. Here are five...

People's Sexiest Man Alive: Five guys who could win it

Could Ryan Reynolds be 2010's sexiest man alive? (AP) As experts in sexy already well know, tomorrow marks a major, major occasion. As in, the occasion when People magazine announces the name of the Sexiest Man Alive, an event so momentous that it really should be a national holiday by now. Although, technically, Presidents' Day does already serve the same function. You know, minus the alive part. This year's "honor" is a bigger deal than usual because 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of the sexiest man alive issue, a tradition born back in 1985 when People chose its first example of masculine hotness, Mel Gibson. (Um, oops?) Certainly there are plenty of good-looking guys in Hollywood who would be worthy of the award. But we've narrowed the contenders down to a few, based on People's track record and the four clues that have been shared so far....

Prince William's engagement: How did royals get the word out before Twitter?

Earlier: Prince William's engagement news comes courtesy of Twitter Charles and Diana in an informal photo taken on the day of their wedding, July 29, 1981. (Reuters) Photo Gallery: Prince William to wed Kate Middleton in 2011 In the dark days before Twitter, royals had to rely on official statements and old media -- like newspapers (for you young'uns, it's an information-relaying medium made from the pulp of dead-trees. Kind of like parchment, but grayer) -- to get out word of a royal engagement. In 1981, then 32-year-old Prince Charles's betrothal to a 19-year-old Diana Spencer was officially announced by his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip while, as The Post's Leonard Downie Jr. reported at the time: Charles and Lady Diana, wearing her large sapphire and diamond engagement engagement ring, posed for pictures and talked briefly to reporters inside. The couple then strolled arm-in-arm, laughing, through the palace...

Pick the animated movie on the Oscar short list that does not belong

"Toy Story 3": To infinity, and the Oscar short list for best animated film. (Pixar/AP) We now know which movies are officially in contention for this year's Academy Award for best animated feature. Oscar organizers revealed today the 15 films that have landed on the short list -- short list perhaps being a misnomer here -- of candidates. From those 15 candidates, three will become nominees. And out of those three nominees, "Toy Story 3" will ultimately be deemed the winner. So really, this whole thing is a bit of a cartoon charade. But I digress. All the usual animated suspects made the first round of cuts....

Daniel Radcliffe proudly let his geek flag fly during an interview on "The Graham Norton Show." In a tribute to Tom Lehrer -- songwriter, humorist and mathematician -- the actor otherwise known as Harry Potter decided to sing his version of "The Elements," Lehrer's musical salute to all the elements in the periodic table. Watch closely and count the times fellow guests Colin Farrell, Rihanna and comedian Rhod Gilbert shift positions uncomfortably at precisely the same second. Those moments are almost as amazing as Radcliffe's off-the-charts level of nerdy-cuteness here. (Video Via Buzzfeed)...

'The Walking Dead': Why, Rick Grimes? Why?

Caution: spoilers ahead (and in the video above): We're three episodes into "The Walking Dead" and already Rick Grimes is making the kind of maddeningly selfless decisions that, back when "Lost" was on the air, sometimes made us want to bonk Jack Shephard over the head with his backpack. His behavior in last night's episode, "Tell It to the Frogs," made for a great conversation-starter. In fact, I'm sure that many AMC viewers are currently having in-depth discussions about race relations, man's responsibility to his fellow man and how uncool it is when zombies have the audacity to snack on deer that -- hello? -- a hillbilly hunter just killed not five minutes ago. That said, the way Grimes handled a key decision during last night's zombie-pocalypse hour also drove me a little mad. For the rest of my rant regarding Grimes and his pesky, inconvenient conscience, continue reading....

Scarlett Johannson named GQ's 'Babe of the Year'

(Image courtesy GQ) Fresh off of her "SNL"-hosting gig, Scarlett Johansson is -- surprise! -- GQ's "Babe of the Year," which is a title given to serious actresses actors by a magazine recently accused of sexing up adults who play teenagers on TV. Why the honor? From GQ: "At 26, she remains fresh-faced, curious, trying on new moods and outlets of expression as easily as she changes her hair color. This is what we love about Scarlett: that she's game, that she's good, that she can try on all these guises without seeming to try too hard. And all the while still seem genuinely like the observant, inquisitive (and very cute) girl in transition we fell for in 'Lost in Translation.'" Johannson shows off her moods and expressions in four photos already posted to GQ.com, in which she perches in unnaturally provocative positions on a gray tarp. The issue...

Former president Bill Clinton films 'Hangover 2' cameo

Clinton on set in Thailand. (Photo courtesy TMZ.com) What do Mike Tyson and Bill Clinton have in common? Well, aside from the prominent face tattoos, both can apparently now boast that they've logged screen time in a "Hangover" movie. While Tyson made his memorable appearance in the first movie, ex-president Clinton recorded a brief cameo for "The Hangover 2" on Saturday in Bangkok, according to People.com. TMZ snagged pix of Clinton on set, reporting that extra security was added for Clinton. The Bradley Cooper/Zach Galifianakis sequel production made news earlier this month when Mel Gibson was dismissed from a cameo role after protests from cast and crew. His spot was quickly refilled by Liam Neeson, so any hopes that Clinton might be taking on Gibson's intended role as a Bangkok tattoo artist are likely dashed. We're guessing Clinton will appear as himself. The ex-president was apparently in Thailand already,...

Jessica Simpson engaged to boyfriend Eric Johnson

Jessica Simpson, newly affianced. (AP) Monkey see, monkey do? On Sunday, Jessica Simpson announced her engagement Eric Johnson, just two weeks after Simpson ex Nick Lachey popped the question to girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo. Simpson and Lachey were reality TV pioneers. Their MTV show "Newlyweds" chronicled their often dippy home life on MTV from 2003 to 2005. The two divorced in 2005, after just three seasons. Simpson, 30, met Johnson -- a vegan former NFL player last May. Five months later, according to Us Weekly, his divorce from an estranged wife was final and Simpson began tweeting treacly messages about her new love. The pair has yet to announce a wedding date. Weekend box office: 'Megamind' maintains top spot

Megamind charms his way to the top ... again.
