Celebritology 2.0: November 21, 2010 - November 27, 2010

Happy Black Friday, see you on Monday

Jen and I are taking a break today to possibly do one of the following things: a. Sleep the day away. (Obviously, I've already blown that plan.) b. Fight the mall hordes for Black Friday deals. c. Watch the "Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" special we DVR'd last night. d. Freak out and hit the gym in a futile attempt to shed the calories we consumed on Thursday. Even though that coconut cream pie was a delish Turkey Day addition. e. Watch football. f. Some combination of all of the above. See you back here on Monday....

The five pieces of Thanksgiving pop culture that make every Turkey Day complete

This Thanksgiving, we at Celebritology are thankful for so much. We are thankful that Jennifer Grey won "Dancing With the Stars" and once again emerged from that famous corner in which people perpetually put her. We are thankful that (fingers crossed) conversation this Thanksgiving weekend will be focused on gossip about the royal wedding instead of gossip about Tiger Woods's adultery-related car accident. We're thankful for Gwyneth Paltrow, now available in both insouciant and irresistible editions. But above all, as we are every year, we are thankful for the enduring Thanksgiving pop culture traditions that get more delicious with each passing year. What are they? Stop brining and basting for a second and we'll share our five favorites....

Kanye West defends Bush, thanks models, pleads ignorance of illuminati

Hey Matt Lauer, Kanye West doesn't need your stinking "Today" show with your sneaky background clips and your annoying questions. Which is why last night in New York, Kanye was finally able to set the record straight about a number of things -- including that "Today" interview, his concerns about a potentially suicidal George W. Bush and how hard it is to be Kanye. All delivered in the easily digestible, yet UTTERLY NSFW, nine-minute video clip below: Did I say "easily digestible"? I kind of lied....

Thanksgiving: Gwyneth Paltrow's back with more GOOPy tips

Gwyneth suggest's weelicious.com's brussel sprouts with lemon and poppy seeds. (Photo courtesy GOOP.com) Gwyneth Paltrow breezily sent out this week's GOOP newsletter, which is just bursting with tips for creating an idyllic Thanksgiving, on Wednesday morning -- "a day early to give us time to brine the turkey and make preparations," she writes. And although I've warmed to Gwyneth and agree with Jen that maybe we, as a community of celebrity watchers, need to ease up on the insouciant one, well, today's newsletter seems to have come from the old, snooty Gwyneth. The Gwyneth who forgets that she lives in a bubble of privilege (though well-earned, I'm sure) where turkeys are magically brined in a delightful mixture of star anise and cloves and we glide to the dinner table in our newest Stella McCartney frock and no one ever has to fight the traffic in the Whole Foods parking...

Michael Brea allegedly killed mother with Freemason sword

An image of Brea from his Facebook page. (Courtesy New York Daily News) More details surrounding the slaying of 55-year-old Yannick Brea are leaking out. Her son, actor Michael Brea, has been accused of the crime. Despite initial reports that Brea's mother had been decapitated with a samurai sword, the New York Daily News is now reporting that the weapon was actually a ceremonial Masonic sword that the actor allegedly took after a Monday night meeting of Freemasons. "Something happened that made him do it," Brea's uncle told the New York Daily News. "The devil entered him." A police source also told the paper that Brea said he saw the devil in his mother and accused her of never accepting Jesus. As he was being led away by police, Brea allegedly yelled, "The greatest architect in the universe!" -- a term sometimes used by Masons to represent a supreme...

John Travolta and Kelly Preston welcome a son

John Travolta and Kelly Preston. (Getty Images) Kelly Preston and John Travolta have a new addition. Preston, 48, gave birth to a son, Benjamin, on Tuesday in Florida. In a statement to People magazine, Preston and Travolta, 56, said they are "ecstatic and very happy about the newest member of the family. Both mother and baby are healthy and doing beautifully." Last week, there was some speculation about whether or not Preston -- a Scientologist -- would have a silent birth, in keeping with Scientology's recommendation that no words be spoken by anyone -- including doctors and nurses -- in the delivery room. Benjamin joins 10-year-old sister Ella Bleu. Travolta and Preston's son, Jett, died of a fatal seizure at 16 in 2009. Source: People...

'Ugly Betty' bit player Michael Brea arrested for allegedly decapitating mother

An image of Brea from his Facebook page. (Courtesy New York Daily News) Michael Brea, an actor who had bit parts in "Ugly Betty" and "Step-Up 3D" has reportedly been taken into custody, accused of decapitating his mother with a samurai sword. According to EW.com, "a spokesperson for the New York Police Department was not yet revealing the names of the people involved, but would confirm that a sword was used in a murder that took place at 2 a.m. at 501 Park Place in Prospect Heights. Records indicate that Brea’s mother lived in Apartment 2 at that address." CBS News reports that the 31-year-old actor reportedly screamed Bible verses and said "repent" as he chased his mother through her home. Neighbors told the New York Daily News that 911 was called after screams were heard coming from the apartment about 1 a.m. Officers came and, supposedly despite blood...

Celebrity Thanksgiving recipes: Overeat like the stars

Gwyneth Paltrow's whole roasted turkey. (Courtesy goop.com) Gwyneth Paltrow isn't the only celebrity with pretensions to culinary glory. Especially when it comes to the mother of all cooking days: Thanksgiving. Last year, Paltrow -- insouciant gastronome extraordinaire -- shared a whopping 13 recipes, from caramelized Brussels sprouts to stuffed turkey burgers with cranberry ketchup, via her weekly GOOP newsletter. We've yet to see whether she'll update for 2010, but really -- why mess with perfection? Earlier this month, another newspaper published Marilyn Monroe's recipe for a stuffing that would work in either chicken or turkey, the writer remarking that the ingredient-heavy concoction "bears the unmistakable balance of fussiness and flexibility that is the hallmark of an experienced and confident cook." Looking for a more traditional stuffing? Maybe Tyrone Power's Turkey Stuffing -- which requires just seven ingredients (one of which is lard) -- is more your style. Bonus: while...

Q&A: Isabella Rossellini on the return of 'Green Porno'

Isabella Rossellini, Golden Globe-winning star of stage and screen and daughter of film legend Ingrid Bergman and Italian director Roberto Rossellini, may end up being forever known as the "bed bug sex" lady. That's because one of Rossellini's "Green Pornos" -- a series of short films she launched in 2008 in which she dramatizes the sex lives of insects and animals -- went viral on the Internet. Why? A well-timed look at bed-bug mating rituals coincided with the resurgence of the insects in the U.S. and was even aired on Jon Stewart's "Daily Show." Rossellini is back with more "Green Porno" in a new group of shorts called "Seduce Me." This time around, Rossellini takes on the carnal cravings of deer, dolphins, seahorses, spiders and some critters -- like earthworms, fish and geese -- that are variously homosexual, transsexual or asexual. When I talked to her Friday, Rossellini was...

Prince William engagement: Which other royals married at Westminster Abbey?

Then Princess Elizabeth and Philip of Greece marry at Westminster in 1947. (AP) On Tuesday, Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their intention to marry at Britain's Westminster Abbey on April 29. The couple shared news of their engagement just last week, with William giving Kate his mother's sapphire engagement ring. Of course, this won't be Westminster's first royal wedding. Princess (now Queen) Elizabeth herself married Prince Philip of Greece at the church on Nov. 20, 1947. And Elizabeth's parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (then the Duke and Duchess of York) married at Westminster in 1923. Prince Andrew -- Elizabeth's second son -- married Sarah Ferguson there in 1986 (though the couple divorced a decade later). Andrew's sister, Princess Anne, also walked the Westminster aisle in 1973 only to divorce in 1992. King Henry I seems to have been the first royal to hold his nuptials at...

Report: Death threats target Bristol Palin and 'DWTS' partner Mark Ballas

Bristol Palin and her "Dancing With the Stars" partner Mark Ballas have received death threats, or so "sources connected with the show" tell TMZ. The sources claim that the threats began last week when Palin made the finals in the celebrity dance-off. Security will be heightened tonight, when Bristol goes toe-to-toe with remaining celebs Jennifer Grey (our pick from Day One) and Kyle Massey. Thus far, Palin has inspired one Wisconsin man to shoot his television, an anonymous prankster to send threatening fan mail filled with white powder and scads of watchers to attribute her success to a vast right-wing conspiracy. The Post's Lisa de Moraes will be online Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET to discuss the "DWTS" finale. Source: TMZ.com...

'The Walking Dead': Plot points to consider after episode four

"Walking Dead" has shuffled past George Romero, right into Bizarro World territory. Assuming that a drama about a world teeming with zombies and the plucky few who manage to avoid becoming dinner isn't already bizarro enough, the four elements below are adding to this author's incredulity and, possibly, affecting the show's overall believability. Again, this assumes that a show about oozing putrescent creatures who want nothing so much as to chomp off your shoulder can have its believability measured. Before we get started, I do need to hand out (perhaps not the best terminology if you watched Sunday's episode) kudos for the show's first truly thrilling surprise zombie attack. Now, on to four plot points that kept me from fully enjoying Sunday's episode. And, yes, there are massive spoilers ahead, so if you haven't watched, bookmark this link for later:...

Leonardo DiCaprio in airliner close shave after engine shuts down

DiCaprio at an "Inception" news conference in Tokyo in July. (AP) Leonardo DiCaprio was aboard a Delta flight bound for Moscow on Sunday when one of the plane's engines shut down, Us Weekly reports. The jetliner was forced to return to New York's JFK airport and, once safely on terra firma, Leo reportedly signed autographs for crew members. Through a rep, DiCaprio said he "wishes to commend the actions of the pilot and flight crew in bringing the plane to a safe landing." DiCaprio, an avid environmentalist, was reportedly on his way to Moscow to participate in a Tiger summit, according to Us Weekly, "a four day meeting to discuss ways to prevent the extinction of tigers, headed by Russian leader Vladimir Putin." So, just to recap, today we've learned that Leonardo DiCaprio will star in a movie about the JFK assassination and that a plane on which he...

Leonardo DiCaprio to produce and star in JFK assassination movie

DiCaprio in 2009's 'Revolutionary Road.' Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to produce and star as an FBI informant helping to solve the murder of John F. Kennedy in "Legacy of Secrecy," based on the 2008 Lamar Waldron/Thom Hartmann book. In the movie, DiCaprio would play FBI informant Jack Van Laningham, who claims to have witnessed the confession of Mafia godfather Carlos Marcello for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy -- which, coincidentally, took place 47 years ago today....

Rumor Mill: Is Christina Aguilera pregnant?

Aguilera at the Nov. 15 'Burlesque' premiere. (AP) I'm skeptical. But since it is heating up Google trends this morning, I am duty bound to pass along the wild speculation that -- thanks to a flowy red carpet dress and a glitzy on-stage cummerbund -- Christina Aguilera is expecting her second child. Why? What evidence do we have? Well, Aguilera has put on a little weight in the past couple of months. Which still makes her skinner than most women by orders of magnitude. But, according to Famecrawler, "during parts of her performance at [last night's] American Music Awards, Christina Aguilera did look a bit fuller in the mid-section." Which, of course, must mean she's pregnant and did not, say, load up on tacos and Mountain Dew earlier in the day. Aguilera is also currently in the divorcing husband Jordan Bratman, with whom she has one son. Watch the...

Weekend box office: Harry Potter and the massive 'Deathly Hallows' revenue

You-know-who, up to no good in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." (Warner Bros. via AP) View 'Harry Potter' photo gallery Anyone who didn't see this coming is, like, totally a muggle. Harry Potter's seventh installment dominated the weekend box office, easily outpacing last weekend's winner, "Megamind," and this weekend's other opening, "The Next Three Days." Below, the top five: 1. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1": As predicted, the latest addition to the Potter series worked its magic on the box office, raking in a $125 million in ticket sales -- a figure that includes it's midnight/early Friday showings. But while the series topped itself, outpacing its last pre-Thanksgiving opening -- 2005's "Goblet of Fire" -- "Twilight: New Moon" still holds the November opening title with $142.8 million, according to Box Office Mojo. 2. "Megamind": The Will Ferrell animated comedy about a supervillian who creates a...
