Update: Lil Wayne released from Rikers Island jail
Updated at 3:09 p.m. with release details.
Despite earlier word from MTV that we would have to wait 24 more hours for Dwayne Michael Carter's (a.k.a. Lil Wayne) release from prison, TMZ is reporting that the rapper was indeed set free from Rikers Island jail this morning after serving an eight-month sentence on gun possession charges.
Why the confusion? According to Department of Corrections public information director Stephen Morrello, MTV got the erroneous information -- that Lil Wayne's release had been delayed -- from an officer who doesn't work in the specific jail where Carter was held.
Also, in a successful bid to outwit MTV, some other stalwart press and fans, Morello says the Department of Corrections took steps to ensure Lil Wayne's safety by not disclosing details of his release in real time.
"We discharge about 75 people on an average day and for them we merely take them off Rikers in a corrections vehicle and drop them off near a courthouse from whence they came," said Morrello. "But we didn't provide any information about when he was leaving, and we delivered him off of Rikers to an undisclosed location."
So he's obviously duck-hunting with former vice president Dick Cheney.
Not really. Wayne's next step is expected to be a trip to Florida where his family and friends plan to celebrate his release with a party Sunday at a Miami strip club.
Here's to hoping he heeds Bill Clinton's advice to take this opportunity to turn over a new leaf.
"This guy's smart," Clinton said in a radio interview, "and he's got ability."
