Melissa Leo: Revealing 'other truths' about 'The Fighter'

The Golden Globe-nominated Melissa Leo. (Getty Images) Melissa Leo has played many roles in her more than 25 years as an actress, including the desperate and destitute mother in "Frozen River," a 2008 performance that led to her first Academy Award nomination. But in Leo's words, becoming Alice Ward -- the determined, gritty mother of boxers Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund in "The Fighter," a portrayal that has already earned her a Golden Globe nomination and will probably lead to a second Oscar nod -- is "one of the most fascinating experiences" she's ever had as an actor. Leo recently talked via telephone about that experience, working with director David O. Russell and her co-stars, Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, and her feelings about the sport of boxing. During that conversation -- throughout which Leo was always forthright and occasionally feisty -- one lesson was definitely learned: Don't ever...

Celebritology Giftology Day 12: Gifts for the cerebral celebrity watcher

"Starstruck": Taking celebrity seriously. (MacMillan) Here's the 12th installment in our 12 Days of Celebritology Giftology series, a dozen posts designed to help you cross the celebrity- and pop-culture-obsessed pals off your holiday gift-giving lists. Think of these posts as our gift to you. We're just that generous. Today's mission: Find a gift for the celebrity-obsessed intellectual, the person who regularly reads the New Yorker but sometimes hides a copy of People magazine behind it. It's Christmas Eve. Present-acquiring time is rapidly running out. But if you're shopping for an intellectual who also has a healthy fascination with fame, you should be able to find at least one of these options at your nearest book store, or get a gift card that will allow the recipient to buy them later....

On this very special Festivus, one man makes it possible to celebrate with 'Seinfeld'

As Festivus revelers around the nation gather today to air their grievances and engage in feats of strength, we can all commemorate the Frank Costanza-founded holiday the way pop culture intended: by watching a broadcast rerun of the "Seinfeld" episode "The Strike." Apparently a Fox employee in Sacramento recently realized his affiliate was not airing the Festivus episode of "Seinfeld" on Dec. 23, which is Festivus Day. Like any rational human being, he deemed this unacceptable. "I said, 'I'm feeling that my religious beliefs are being compromised here. There is no Festivus episode scheduled, and that's blasphemy,'" Fox40 employee Greg Saunders told a representative from Sony, according to a report from, well, Fox40. (Look, it's a slow news day and journalism is dying. Network staffers apparently now have to make their own news, as well as cover it.) As a result of Saunders's bold action, the Festivus episode will air...

Seeking retro holiday specials? BetMaXmas is still in business

BetaMaXmas, serving up some quality "Alf." (Image via the blog Batman Smells) Remember in 2008 when a little Web site called BetaMaXmas -- an auto-generating feed of '80s holiday YouTube clips designed to look like a wood-paneled rec room circa 1983 -- went viral? Turns out it's still up, running and uploading freshly digitized, 30-year-old material. Jeffery Bennett, a Web developer who used to live in Arlington and now resides in San Francisco, tells me via e-mail that some of the recently added videos include "A Garfield Christmas," "Santa Bear's High Flying Adventures" and assorted commercials from the year 1982. The site's old-school TV and TV Guide update automatically based on how much new, related content shows up on YouTube. (This post on Bennett's blog explains how it all works.) Bennett built the site for fun and makes no money from it. But he is gratified by the interesting...

Celebritology Giftology Day 11: Donate like the stars

Scarlett Johansson, Oxfam supporter. Think of these posts as our gift to you. We're just that generous. Today's mission: Donating to a celebrity-endorsed charity in the name of a friend or family member. Only imagine the looks of wonderment when your loved ones open their "gift" to find out that instead of socks or movie theater gift cards, you've given them the gift of helping to build a school in Africa. And, the best place to find out what celebrities champion which causes is looktothestars.org, a virtual clearinghouse of information on the world of celebrity giving. By its own count, Look to the Stars lists 1,620 charities and 2,362 celebrities. Surely there's something there for everyone on your...

'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' vs. that other 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'

Cindy Lou Who, you are such a cute little rube. (AP) Anyone with a vague sense of what goes on in Whoville knows the following to be true: The Chuck Jones cartoon "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," which debuted in 1966, is roughly 8 million times better than Ron Howard's 2000 movie version of the Dr. Seuss tale. Your votes in our recent "rank the holiday specials" poll only provided further evidence of this undeniable fact. Out of the 23 standard yuletide TV specials and films Liz included in the survey, the '66 "Grinch" ranks No. 1, while Jim Carrey's over-the-top portrayal of the monster we wouldn't touch with a 39 1/2-foot pole shows up at No. 16. Yet despite the obviously disproportionate level of quality between these two Mount Crumpit projects, ABC has made the audacious scheduling decision to show both "Grinches" back to back, beginning tonight at...

Michelle Williams discusses Heath Ledger's death

In a "Nightline" interview, Michelle Williams tells Cynthia McFadden that she still can't find greater meaning in ex-boyfriend Heath Ledger's death. She also says she misses the time period that followed Ledger's death because, for her, it was a year of magical thinking. "It didn't seem unlikely to me that he could walk through a door, or could appear behind a bush. It was a year of very magical thinking," she says. "In some ways, I'm sad to be moving farther and farther away from it." The portion where she addresses the loss of Ledger -- the first time she has done so in a TV interview -- starts around the 5:14 mark....

David Schwimmer to become a dad

David Schwimmer, soon-to-be daddy. (AP) David Schwimmer and wife Zoe Buckman are about to become parents. Entertainment Weekly reports that the former "Friends" star and Buckman, the British photographer he wed in a decidedly under-the-radar manner over the summer, are expecting their first child. Two important points must be raised in light of this news. 1. By our calculation, that means all of the "Friends" now fall into the parental category with the exception of two: Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston. 2. Around this time next year, we assume that Schwimmer will be amusing his own child by dressing up as the holiday armadillo. Source: Entertainment Weekly...

'Little Fockers': The parade of terrible reviews

In a strange coincidence, Colin Baiocchi has the same look on his face as most critics did after seeing "Little Fockers." (Universal) By releasing the ridiculously titled third entry in a comedy franchise that got stale roughly five minutes into "Meet the Parents," Universal Studios has pretty much issued a handwritten invitation for critics to mock "Little Fockers." ("Fockers -- that's what I mumbled to myself when I found out I had to see this movie!" See how easy it is?) And mock it critics have. Let's rifle through the reviews currently adding up to a pathetic "8% Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and find some of the best "Fockers"-skewering commentary together, shall we?...

Lindsay Lohan accuser fired from Betty Ford Center

Lindsay Lohan, heading into court earlier this year. (AP) The Betty Ford Center technician who has accused Lindsay Lohan of assaulting her has been fired from the clinic. As both People and TMZ have reported, chemical technician Dawn Holland lost her job after speaking to TMZ about the alleged conflict between she and Lohan, one that sparked a battery investigation by police. The reason for the termination: Holland violated the center's patient confidentiality rules. (Probably should have seen that coming.) TMZ also has posted video of Holland offering more details about what supposedly happened on Dec. 12. Her account claims that Lohan and two other patients snuck out of Betty Ford to go drinking. After getting caught, Holland says, Lohan refused to take a breathalyzer, got belligerent and allegedly sprained Holland's arm in the process. Lohan, meanwhile, disputes the whole story and says Holland attacked her. Happy holidays, everyone....

Peter Billingsley: He appeared on Nightline. And he still hasn't shot his eye out

Most people know what happened to Ralphie Parker from "A Christmas Story." Peter Billingsley -- the actor who played the young boy who dreamed of BB guns and decoder pins -- grew up and became a Hollywood producer and director. He's even appeared in several of the movies (some of which he also produced) made by friends Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, including "The Break-Up," "Iron Man" and two holiday movies: "Elf" and "Four Christmases." Even for those who know what he's up to, it's still sort of fun to hear him talk "A Christmas Story" in this Nightline interview. Added bonus: footage from "A Christmas Story: The Musical," including the exciting leg lamp kickline! Not having seen the show, all I can say is this: I hope Grover Dill, Scut Farcus's crummy little toady, gets a decent solo....

Lindsay Lohan being investigated by cops for alleged assault

Lindsay Lohan, back in trouble. (AP) The Associated Press is reporting that Lindsay Lohan is the subject of a battery investigation being conducted by Palm Desert, Calif., police. The latest in the ongoing parade of Lohan troubles occurred after the actress allegedly assaulted a staff member at the Betty Ford Center, where she is currently undergoing court-ordered rehab. Now here comes the kicker: The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Dec. 12, when TMZ reports that the staff member reprimanded Lohan for coming home past curfew after spending the night at a bar. It's unclear if this will affect Lohan's probation. The former Disney darling has been neither charged nor arrested in the case....

Q&A with Hailee Steinfeld, the 'True Grit' star who made the Coen brothers giggle

Hailee Steinfeld, on the set of "True Grit" with Ethan and Joel Coen. (Wilson Webb/AP) Hailee Steinfeld celebrated her 14th birthday eleven days ago. Even though she's not old enough to obtain her learner's permit -- or, technically, to see any of the Coen brothers' R-rated films without being accompanied by an adult -- she's currently starring in the Coens' latest: the critically praised "True Grit." (The Post's Ann Hornaday calls Steinfeld's performance "uncommonly assured.") Steinfeld has been making the press rounds, appearing on late night TV and -- despite all the buzz about the potential for her to receive an Academy Award nomination for her performance -- seemingly keeping her head on exceptionally straight. Can a teenager who's suddenly been thrust into the spotlight really be so poised? I spoke to Steinfeld via telephone. And, as much as one can judge from a 15-minute phone call, the answer...

Julianne Hough video actually kind of not banned

Julianne Hough onstage in Hanover, Md. (Evy Mages) Julianne Hough recently told a crowd of Maryland concert-goers that her slightly provocative video for "Is That So Wrong" was "kind of" banned by Country Music Television. Turns out that "kind of" isn't true. As the L.A. Times reports, a representative for CMT says the video was indeed pulled, but because of "ongoing contract negotiations with Julianne's label, Universal Music Group." Other videos by Universal artists also were removed from MTV's and VH-1's Web sites earlier this year because of issues involving Universal's licensing agreement. So the explanation for the missing Hough clip appears to be something far more boring than her allegedly too-racy-for-CMT content. To be fair, when she said last week that the video had been banned, she made sure to use the phrase "kind of." Which, after all, is legalese for "not really."...

Just watch this video filmed last night of Mr. O'Neal, dressed in a sharp tuxedo and conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Bret Michaels and Kristi Gibson Engaged

Bret Michaels and longtime girlfriend Kristi Gibson are officially engaged. As anyone who watched last night's season finale of "Bret Michaels: Life As We Know It" already saw, the former Poison frontman got down on one knee and said the words every woman longs to hear: "Please say yes or the rejection will kill me right now." Michaels denied back in July that he and Gibson -- who have been together on and off for 16 years and have two daughters together -- were engaged despite tabloid reports implying they were headed for marriage. That's because an engagement does not become official until it's broadcast on a VH1 reality show. Everyone knows that. Congrats to the happy couple. May every one of their roses have as few thorns as possible....

Anthony Mackie: 'I'm the most famous actor from The Wire who has never been on The Wire'

Anthony Mackie alongside Kerry Washington in "Night Catches Us." (Anneke Schoneveld Photography via Associated Press) You've seen Anthony Mackie in more movies, TV shows and plays than you can probably remember. His credits include everything from "Million Dollar Baby" to "Notorious" (in which he played the late Tupac Shakur) to "The Hurt Locker," the Best Picture winner that put him and his co-stars in the Oscar spotlight. Now Mackie can be seen onscreen in "Night Catches Us," a Spirit Award-nominated indie drama directed by Silver Spring native Tanya Hamilton that focuses on the rekindling of a relationship between former members of the Black Panther movement. Mackie recently talked via telephone about the film and pretty much any other subject that got thrown at him, including his fake love-making with co-star Kerry Washington ("we were, like, in a hallway on laundry"), his desire to appear fat and bald in a...

Jeff Bridges visits Little Lebowski store, reaffirms Dude status in new video clip

Jeff Bridges -- who further cemented his place of affection in Americans' hearts by singing "Silver Bells" with Cookie Monster on "Saturday Night Live" (see video below) -- is the subject of a new American Masters documentary that's scheduled to run next month on PBS. Undoubtedly sensing a spike on the Bridges-in-the-zeitgeist meter, PBS has released a preview clip of the documentary. It features the "Tron: Legacy" star visiting New York's Little Lebowski store, a shop full of "The Dude is My Boyfriend" T-shirts that's (obviously) inspired by Bridges's most beloved White Russian-sipping character, the Dude from "The Big Lebowski." Watch Bridges explore the place of Dude-ly commerce ("Cool shop, man"), explain his initial reluctance to appear in "The Big Lebowski" (he didn't want to saddle his daughters with a reputation as a "pothead father") and express his happiness about agreeing to take the role ("Boy am I glad I...

Julianne Hough's new video: Too Hot for CMT?

Hey, news flash: Julianne Hough -- former "Dancing With the Stars" pro -- is now a country-music singer. Betcha didn't know that. In fact, I'm guessing not many people knew that Hough put out her first self-titled album in 2008 and is set to follow up with a new set of songs, expected to drop in 2011. Hough released a single, "Is That So Wrong?," from the album back in June. It failed to chart, according to my source on all things country-music related: Wikipedia. Which may explain why Hough released a video for the song, below, that is apparently too racy for Country Music Television (CMT). Warning: It is indeed racy if you consider a) a woman in a bra and Daisy Duke shorts somersaulting onto a bed and right into the splits or b) gyrating hips to be overtly sexual: How do we know it's too racy for...

And that performance is for a movie that, according to Box Office Mojo , cost almost as much to make ("How Do You Know" budget: $120 million) as "Tron: Legacy," (budget: $170 million) which...

Official Prince William/Kate Middleton royal wedding tchotchkes go on sale

(Reuters) In need of a pillbox that handily reminds you of the April 29 wedding date of Britain's Prince William and his soon-to-be-wife Kate Middleton? It's your lucky day. Monday, the first official memorabilia went on sale at royal palaces across the U.K. and at the royal family's official online shop. Each piece bears the couple's entwined initials in gold and silver surmounted by the coronet of Prince William and the wedding date. Handmade exclusively for the Royal Collection in Stoke-on-Trent using methods that have remained unchanged for 250 years, each item is individually decorated and then embellished with several layers of burnished gold and platinum before a final layer of gilding in 22-carat gold is applied by hand. The commemorative plate is going for...

FBI contacted over threats to Lindsay Lohan [Report]

Lindsay Lohan. (AP) The FBI has been contacted in connection with a series of threatening messages sent to Lindsay Lohan, according to TMZ. Not only Lilo, but her mother and brother, Michael Jr., have also reportedly received "strange" messages telling them to stay away from Sam Lutfi (Britney Spears's ex-"manager") and Michael Lohan. Earlier this weekend, TMZ was reporting that Lutfi had been responsible for the harassing calls and texts, allegedly falsely identifying himself as "Mike from TMZ" and warning Lohan to distance herself from mom Dina. Lutfi denies having contacted La Lohan. Michael Lohan* confirmed (for whatever that's worth) that Lilo has indeed been moved to an undisclosed location -- a new rehab facility -- but denies Lutfi is the reason, citing "two other individuals who caused her to move for her safety." Sources: TMZ, Starpulse.com (*Just for the record, Michael Lohan released a public statement back in...
