Aretha Franklin reportedly has pancreatic cancer

By Jen Chaney

The ailing Aretha Franklin -- who had major surgery just last week-- has pancreatic cancer, according to the Detroit News.

Citing a "source familiar with the situation," the News report says the disease is what prompted Franklin to take six months off; the Queen of Soul's publicist, however, has not yet confirmed that information.

After her surgery last week, Franklin released a statement that characterized the procedure as "highly successful." A specific prognosis for the legendary singer, who is 68, has not yet been given. Here's hoping she rebounds and start singing about R-E-S-P-E-C-T very soon.

Presumably Aretha underwent a Whipple procedure: rough situation, discouraging prognosis. Wednesday love to the Queen of Soul.

You'd think with all the celebrities coming down with pancreatic cancer it would get more funding for research. PC is 99% fatal. Only a few survive after diagnosis. Some may linger longer than others but it's not a good cancer to get. Two good foundations to find more information: Pancreatic Cancer Action Network ( -- Patrick Swayze's widow has become a spokesman for this wonderful organization) and the Lustgarten Foundation (Goggle them and find their website).

May God be with you, Aretha ...

I saw "pancreatic cancer" in that headline and went "ffffffffffff". Hopefully this is an incorrect report, but in any case, I wish her the best.

Oh, no. My heart is breaking. Pancreatic is one of the worst cancers, if not the worst, in terms of outcome and prognosis. G-d be with you, my dear. Stay strong.

Folks, Aretha is a national treasure. Rolling Stone magazine recently put her at the top of their list of the 100 greatest singers of all time. Though I don't often care what Rolling Stone has to say, in this case I agree. If you get one last chance to see her perform, do it.

That's the worst form, is it not?

Too bad. God Bless.

The latest news report stated the pancreatic cancer she has is incurable. We all pray for you Aretha, your music has helped many of us through tough times of our own, now we are steadfastly in your corner during this time. May God be with you as we are too.

Was this really an appropriate moment to be G-L-I-B? It really is okay just to report without attempting to be cute or clever.

My mother died of pancreatic cancer eight years ago. I wish Aretha all the best in her fight.

Carm down, conlakappa.

Heart sank. My Mom had "successful" surgery for pancreatic cancer and for awhile we thought she'd be a "lucky five-percenter", but it was in her system, marker count started rising and it spread to her liver, and she died 14 mos after surgery in '07. A horrible cancer. Blessings on Aretha, praying for the best.

People just have to get used to the idea of dying. These days when I see the doctor and he says "Mr. 7891, you'd better have a test for (fill in name of nasty medical condition)" I just laugh and tell him that I am beyond his threats. There are so many things competing to kill me that, paradoxically, I don't care anymore. When I was young I worried - but no more. I don't mind dying, in some ways it will be an improvement. As nature intended, I managed to procreate and raised my offspring to survive and do likewise. Next stop for me: the recycle bin. No biggie.

Nosy Parker, I'm perfectly calm, which is what I assume you meant by "carm." When last I checked, I was welcome to offer a comment. When I want your nosy permission or advice as to its content, I'll certainly seek it.

Posted by: conlakappa1 | December 8, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

Ma'am. I certainly hope you feel better and get well soon.

First, she's entitled to her privacy.

That said, I hope and pray that she has a complete and speedy recovery. I also hope and pray that she doesn't have pancreatic cancer. (Four people that I know lost someone that they loved to pancreatic cancer.) It's probably one of the cruelest forms of cancer, because it's hard to detect, there's no early detection test, it's very, very aggressive and it's almost always fatal.

yes conlakappa dear, we all get to comment, AND we get to comment on the comments. You don't get to edit out comments or 'advice' directed at you that you don't like. Besides "I'm perfectly fine" is rarely, if ever, true, when said like that. and, to directly address your comments, "Here's hoping she rebounds and start singing about R-E-S-P-E-C-T very soon" is the only sentence that wasn't direct reporting - I didn't find anything glib about it, I read it as sincere get well wishes.
So, get a grip, and carm down. and send Aretha good get well wishes instead of harping on others who are doing just that. So there.

Such a sad week. First Elizabeth Edwards, and now the Queen of Soul.

Ree has been such an inspiration to all of us over the years. Her music is like a trip through time for me, growing up with her, saving my nickels and dimes as a kid to buy my very first 45, Respect. Seeing her in concerts, buying her albums and CD's, her books, this can't be happening.

You are in our thoughts and prayers, Ree. Pls pull through so that you may sing again to your devoted fans.

Oh no. With liver and pancreatic cancer, death usually comes pretty fast. I wish Ms. Franklin the best. The Queen of Soul is a great talent, one that I've always R-E-S-P-E-C-Ted immensely.

I'm praying for you, Aretha! Though they say it is incurable, I hope you can somehow beat the dismal prognosis and Rock Steady for years to come!

Posted by: ecjwlove | December 9, 2010 12:25 PM | Report abuse

My prayers are with the Queen of Soul and all who are living with life-threatening diseases.
