Bristol Palin headed to Arizona State University? [Rumor Mill]

By Liz Kelly

Bristol and her son Tripp in the June issue of Harper's Bazaar. (Harper's Bazaar)

Watch out Meghan McCain, another high-profile political daughter is apparently planning to make her home in Arizona.

Bristol Palin, daughter of onetime vice presidential candidate/conservative darling Sarah Palin and a recent "Dancing with the Stars" runner-up herself, plans to enroll at Arizona State University, according to TMZ.

On Friday, news broke that Palin bought a $172,000 five-bedroom home in Maricopa, Ariz., from a North Dakota couple in early December.

"I'm not sure why she wanted to buy that home, but we are real happy for her," previous owner Michael Smith told The Arizona Republic.

TMZ speculates that Palin chose the home because of its proximity to the Arizona State University school of broadcasting.

If true, Palin will totally outshine Maricopa's other celebrity resident (as per Wikipedia): Antony Hämäläinen: lead singer of melodic death metal band Nightrage. Though he definitely wins the "most umlauts in my last name" game.

Well I hope she does a better job at it than her mother who dropped out of 5 colleges before finally getting a degree.

I think there are some factual errors in this report. The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at ASU is located in downtown Phoenix. Maricopa, AZ is a small town about 45 minutes south of downtown Phoenix. However, Phoenix is located in Maricopa COUNTY. Someone should fact check this story THEN speculate about what the motivation might be.

Anyone else on Lizard Island recall Tommy Lee's stint at the University of Nebraska several years ago, which was filmed for a TV "reality series"? I loved his travails learning to fit in with the U/N marching band.

I wonder if Bristol has a similar adventure in mind. Or maybe she'll last about as long at ASU as at her job in that doctor's office in Alaska (i.e., until DWTS money and fame called).

Or maybe she'll follow in her mom's stiletto-steps by transferring to a succession of universities and junior colleges. Remember too that although Sarah's degree was in journalism, she never participated on a school newspaper, radio or TV station during her six years of undergraduate, um, study.

With a GED in one hand and a bastard child in the other, this unemployeed carpetbagger moves to Arizona. I wonder if she'll pay out of state tuition or be subsidized by the Zonies.

On a more serious note, I'd love nothing better than to see Bristol receive an actual college education, and get her head filled with ideas (some even liberal!), so she could have a real career and give her mother "the big ol' middle finger."

Posted by: Nosy_Parker | December 27, 2010 10:53 AM | Report abuse

That photo of Bristol looks, ahem, seriously photoshopped around the middle, for those of us who know what her figure generally looks like from DWTS (this picture predates her getting all that regular strenuous exercise, too).

And does Michelle Obama realize that Bristol is exposing herself and her child to all those high-sugar, high-fat empty calories?

Aaah! I remember that first year in college where I picked out my first home and paid cash for it. It is just an old traditional blue collar teenage home ownership that is a centuries old part of the college experience. This should show once and for all that the Palins are just one of us working class folks. God Bless their tiny little heads.

I hope her all the success in the world. People just because her mother is what she is does not mean the daughter is the same. Shes a young beautiful lady with a son and she just wants to educate herself, good for her.

Washington Dame & Realistic: Lil' Chubby & Sarah Who? bring all their negative publicitiy on themselves - no sympathy for either is due. Even the above photo is meant as a middle finger to the First Lady. Someone should let Lil' Chubby know that fat, dumb, & angry is no way to go through life. And someone should tell her about condoms (oops, that ship has sailed, I guess).

Posted by: nyskinsdiehard | December 27, 2010 11:39 AM | Report abuse

Sandydayl, I agree. There are no illegitimate children, only illegitimate parents. I feel sorry for the kid. And that Bristol, unlike her mom and grandmother, who also got knocked up from premarital sex, couldn't "close the deal" with her baby-daddy for a marriage, thus letting Levi get to negotiate some of his LEGAL responsibilities, instead of shouldering them automatically, like a real man instead of a superannuated child.

Agree w/ Nosy Parker that the photo is photoshopped: Palin's missing the hanging arm fat, the gut, & 2 or 3 chins!

I despise her mother, but I have nothing against Bristol other than her parentage. I see this move as just the first step in her emancipation from her domineering mother. I get the feeling that Bristol and her mom aren't all that warm and fuzzy together.
Wait until the Bristol book comes out with some less than flattering details about her parents.

When Bristol Palin went to settlement on the house, she brought an armored car filled with quarters. "Did you hoard those quarters?" asked the settlement attorney. "Not all," replied Bristol. "I w(hor)ed half of them on DWTS and my mother w(hor)ed the other half as a commentator for Faux News."

A non-Sarah P supporter here.

HOWEVER - anytime a single teenage mother can better herself, that's worthy of public support. Whether she got funds from her own celebrity status or her failure of a parent, Sarah, is totally irrelevant. She's managed to clothe she and her child, get into college and plan for her future better than most of her peers of the same age. Its a focus sadly lacking in many these days.

And NEVER knock a GED - its far harder to achieve than a high school diploma.

1. Earlier stories indicated that she paid cash for the residence, money earned from her speaking fees and her appearance on Dancing with the Stars.
2. The house is in a gated community in Maricopa, a bedroom community south of Phoenix in Pinal County. She purchased it for half of what it sold for before the collapse of housing prices in Arizona.
3. Like most state universities, Arizona State University does have admission requirements, especially for out-of-state residents. Given the disruption to her high school education from the birth of her son, she may need to bring up her grades and/or establish residency before applying. Chandler-Gilbert Community College, a 45 minute drive from Maricopa, may be her first college in Arizona.
4. Both the main campus in Tempe, and the journalism school in its new facility in downtown Phoenix are about an hour's drive from Maricopa.
5. On DWTS, she repeatedly stated that she wanted to be a role model. What better example for a 20-year-old single parent to set for others than to go to college?
6. Looking ahead, like the House, Arizona has a minimum age of 25 before running for the state legislature. Until Arizona redraws its congressional districts, Maricopa sits in the middle of Raul Grijalva's district, a supposedly safe Democratic district that he almost lost to an unknown Tea Party candidate in November. Arizona also does not have a problem with out-of staters. There's newly elected congressman Ben Quayle, whose dad was elected to the Senate from Indiana, and Senator Kyl's whose father was a congressman from Iowa.

dummypants, owning a house isn't necessarily sufficient for Bristol to establish in-state RESIDENCY (not citizenship) for tuition purposes. Most universities require a period of non-student permanent residency in a state (typically 6 months to a year) in order to qualify for the lower in-state tuition.

Its little use wondering how liberals justify giving in state tuition to illegals and denying it to Bristol Palin. Nevermind that only the later is in the state, let alone the country, lawfully.

But then what would we laugh at without the liberal (excuse me, "progressive") bipolar swings between sweet humanity loving idealism and stupifying illogic and pure unadulterated hatred of 60% of Americans.

Like so many young women in the difficult situation of being under-educated teen-age mom, she's facing a turning point in her life. I'm glad she's made the decision to get away from the bad influences in her life. Especially good for her will be getting away from the self-involved adults who's good influence and attention might have guided her away from bad choices.

The sacrifices she makes now will give her a stable and self-sufficient household for herself and her son. No one could ask her to do more.

Has anyone else stopped to reflect on the notion that Bristol wants to major in BROADCASTING in college? Doesn't anyone else recall how utterly devoid she was of personality during her interview moments on DWTS, not to mention her dull affect when they showed snippets of her abstinence speeches on the road? One can hardly think of a more unsuitable major for Bristol. Oh well, maybe her mommy's lunatic supporters can get her elected ASU Homecoming Queen.

I'm not partial for the young lady but I am glad she is wanting to work towards a degree at a respectable university. I am sadden that she may be perusing a degree in broadcasting as most likely any network, though Fox would be the first, would pick her up just because of her name.

Though it would be funny if she went into radio and ended up doing the morning show drives (I've heard this and the afternoon drive are where the money is).

On a side note: NIGHTRAGE!

"I wonder how liberals argue for in state tuition for illegal immigrants but NOT for Bristol Palin."

Illegal immigrants who live in a state are already paying money into the state system (for instance, through fees and sales taxes) whereas someone from outside the state is not. Obviously there are reasons not to give in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, but let's not pretend that illegal immigrants don't pad the bottom lines for many of the rest of us.

Anyhow, I'm glad that Bristol is going to college. I hope she learns a lot, completes her degree, and has a successful life, perhaps somewhat less in the public eye.

It's funny always seeing mom and daughter on TV, just wondering who actually watches their kids? Seems like not a lot of parenting from these two(Sarah and Bristol). While she's away from family, she'll have to find affordable day care or nanny to watch her son so she can finish her education. Not sure how she's able to afford the house? or if she'll even work? Another misleading issue with her, most pregnant teenagers don't come close to everything that has been handed to Bristol.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You’re kidding, right? Everybody who appears on DWTS earns 6 figures, and her Mom, Sarah “The Bimbo” Palin was earning $250,000 per episode on “Sara Palin’s Alaska” which her reps are negotiating upwards of a cool million or more per episode for Palin’s 2nd season.

The Palin’s are officially rich, each in their own right. Bristol alone had some kind of single mom abstinence program before she got on DWTS.

“Affordable”? No longer a necessary element for any of the Palin’s, not even Bristol’s baby daddy Levi Johnston – even Levi has a TV gig.

There is nothing like a good education to help both young men and women to navigate this big bad world, and I also hope that she finishes college in 5 years or less, and hopefully at the same school without getting pregnant again. It's hard enough being a young single mother without a good husband, let alone being a single mother with no higher learning.

Hopefully, while she's there, she can also learn to better groom herself into becoming a mature woman, and not some trash talking hilly billy like her mother.

That said, spare me the pontification about a single mother bettering herself. No, fame, achieved by solely by her relationship to her mother, has created this opportunity for Bristol Palin. lordmi-agree with you-her moron mommy purchased the house so that the whole Palin brood can spend LOTS of time in the state of Arizona, the hot-bed of unrest, political and immigrative, and then her
moron mommy can be close enough to give that awesome sheriff, who lots of us admire, lots of grief. Mommy Dearest just wants to be near that nut-job governor down there, and the repubs will encourage her gun-totin', smarmy rants and ignorance.

Why are there so many haters in this blog. The haters are most likely radical liberals or losers. What has Sarah Palin or her daughter done to generate so much hate? Sarah has not committed any crimes or even created any laws to hurt the American people. Liberals don't like her because she is not behaving as a Hollywood celebrity. Liberals like women who get drunk, use drugs, smoke pot, are promiscuous, have abortions,or like to show their top and bottom all the time. This is what all these loonies like. Fortunely there are more family oriented people in America than these radical lefties. Sarah won't need your votes. People with goodwill and manners will vote for her.

TO: bubbasouth who wrote:
“Certainly, Arizona State is eager to enroll pretty, popular Bristol Palin as a co-ed. The powerful Palin name will add enormous prestige to the University.”

So you take an un-wed teenage mother and call that “prestigious”?

You’ve got some pretty low standards there, which most of America would not agree with. In fact, I don’t know anyone who set their teenage child in front of Bristol as their role model.

Palin? Powerful? Only among the whackos.

jaitop-Caraboo Barbie wouldn't know "good will and manners" if it jumped up and bit her in the face!! Where have you been the last three years? I guess her "good will and manners" is what she was depicting on SNL, and every other time she's opened her mouth, or "performed" for us all. Good will and manners, she has neither, and never will have.

lindalovejones-the low standards you mentioned are MANY within the weakening GOP/Conservative party, it is truly amazing to me that so many Americans can settle for so little, and actually are lemem-like running to their demise. Would that they will not drag us all over that cliff along with them, but we Dems will not lower our standards to that creten level. It is pitiful.

When you leftist democrat liberals are not hating American you spend the rest of your time hating Republicans or even the children of republicans!

If only we could get you cowardly, sissy, scared to say terrorist, weak, appeasing, girly men, manly woman, soft types to focus half of your hateful energy on foreign terrorist who actually kill Americans, real Americans would respect you.

You liberals are disgusting on the inside and the average liberal woman wishes they looked as good as Helen Thomas!

What I'd like to know is how that red neck daughter of the Clintons' could afford Million $$$$ digs in NY. Chelsea hasn't worked a day in her life, yet her and hubby, the son of a felon bankster fraud guy, can live in million dollar homes. Both mom and dad are out begging for cash to pay off their failed campaign debts.
Liberals..the haters,.. are going after Bristol... it is amazing.. yet Bristol earned her own money.
Can the libturds be anymore disgusting?
Have a good solstice.. full of hate as usual.
sick mental perverts.

It is not clear whether the lascivious daughter of Sarah bs wants to go to college to try new 'teabags', or she really wants to get an ejikation so she can refudiate her downbringing (there was no upbringing).

Bristol Palin is an example to the many young women who are single moms. Earn your money and invest wisely. Liberal twits like Lindsey Lohan is spending her money going to rehab, others are getting plastic surgery up the wazoo, and still others like Chelsea Clinton are spending millions on a wedding to a man who hasn't earned any money, and neither has she, yet are living in million $$ digs in NY.
Of course the libturds can't stand it. Bristol makes good decisions and is beautiful too boot.
And what a beautiful child.
Good luck Bristol.
Just watch out for crazed liberals. I fear that the shootout with the TV and death threats could be the sign of liberal lunatics that may try to kill you.
Keep an Uzi ready for them.

Good luck Bristol. I have nothing but disdain for your mother and feel sorry for your family. I hope you moved a thousand away from her so you can start the life she never gave you.

If the rumors are true good luck at AZ State. Work hard, get a degree, get a good job and make something of yourself, unlike you mother. Reality TV gigs are a sure path to ruin. Your mom will realize that in a few years when she realizes no one cares about her anymore. Good to see you are trying to take a different path.

Posted by: Fate1 | December 27, 2010 10:30 PM | Report abuse

Hey vickie, when all you can do to defend a wrong is point to something you think is more wrong, all you do is move the line between right and wrong in the wrong direction.

First, Bristol is not an example of any single mom I know. They cannot take weeks off to star on TV, a job gotten through connections, making tons of money on name only. And Lohan is a liberal? My God, where did you get that? As for Chelsea, she is as likely to be a liberal as a conservative. I doubt you know anything about her besides her name.

Both Chelsea and Bristol have had issues growing up in families under the media microscope, but if these two families were relatives of mine I know which I would be more proud of for raising their child properly.

I don't know if Bristol is moving away to get away from mommy dearest, to go to a school of her choice or just wanting to get away from the AK cold, but IMHO the further she is from Sarah the better for her and her child. This is not a political issue. Sarah has failed as a mother and continues to fail.

Posted by: Fate1 | December 27, 2010 10:46 PM | Report abuse

Yes, perhaps the Palins can promote their daughter to the point where she will be able to support them in the luxury to which John McCain got them accustomed, just like Michael Jackson's family lived off him!

Whatever is the point of that cake-cluttered kitchen photo in such a ridiculous non-"motherly", non-"baker" evening dress, with a baby sitting there, would take quite a bit of explaining. Does it depict how confused Bristol has become from her Mother's pushing her?

I can't imagine why anyone with any self-respect could use their dysfunctional family as such spectacles all the time? I guess that's the answer! There IS no self-respect!

Posted by: Maerzie | December 27, 2010 11:16 PM | Report abuse

Once again liberal tolerance is out on full display. What has butt-ugly Chelsea Clinton done in her life besides spread her chubby legs for the parasite son of a multimillionaire felon?

Remember liberals; Bristol Palin is a member of you favorite class -- the "sainted single mother". She went on a TV show, made it to the finals and earned her own money. Apparently single mothers are only revered by the left if they are on welfare.

Posted by: oldno7 | December 27, 2010 11:17 PM | Report abuse

Is Bristol perhaps selling cakes to pay for her slightly outrageous winter home for her parents?? Extravagance and materialism seem to be the ONLY lessons taught in that dysfunctional family!

Posted by: Maerzie | December 27, 2010 11:25 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Bristol recognizes that her mother's celeb days are numbered, and that she (Bristol) had better seize the opportunity to get things that will serve her and her child well in life after her mother sinks like a stone. Things like an affordable house, and higher education.

Posted by: Nosy_Parker | December 27, 2010 11:31 PM | Report abuse

"skinswitabullet", I doubt very much that Bristol is "emancipated". Her extravagant college home was probably paid for in cash by Mamma's short-lived windfall. Sarah and Todd will go through that wad in no time with their outageous self-indulgence. Then they'll all be on welfare or "disability"!

Are the bigger dummies the Fox 5 Palin followers (Sarah, Bristol, or the the other abject morons) or us, the shocked, becoming more stupid WP readers that continue to pay attention to this crap?

It's great when conservatives tell us what liberals are supposed to think, like, do, say & feel. That's when I find out I've been doing it wrong all these years!

My God, where did you get that? As for Chelsea, she is as likely to be a liberal as a conservative. I doubt you know anything about her besides her name.... My boyfriend thinks the same as I do. He is eight years older than me, lol. We met online at agegaplove``.com a nice and free place for younger women and older men, or older women and younger men, to interact with each other. Maybe you wanna check out or tell your friends.

The grifting mother of an illiterate, high school drop-out and unwed mother named Bristol calls herself another "Shakespeare?" Any further discussion of Sarah or Bristol Palin's miniscule intellects is totally redumbdant.

3) Where did she get an elementary ejikation?

Great piece of photography. If the comments here are any indication of the danger the Palin family faces on a daily basis, I hope their houses are gated and they all have a very good security detail!

AnotherHagman: I'm a mother and although I think Sarah and her fam are MEDIA pimps I DO DRAW THE LINE ON KIDS (under 18)!!!!! I don't subscribe to wishing ill will on children because the parent might be a fool or make poor decisions so I stand by what I said. If Bristol gets her behind in school and gives her son a HEALTTHIER lifestyle than I wish her well!!!!

Bristol Palin is a celebrity? Why? Because she spread her legs out of wedlock? As a devout Christian, Sarah Palin must be horrified that Bristol's sins are being rewarded in this manner.
