'Home Alone,' reenacted on Twitter
So here's a weird coincidence. There's a kid named Kevin McAllister (Twitter handle: KevinM_GS) whose recent Tweets sound an awful lot like the events that occur in the movie "Home Alone" ... which also features a character named Kevin McAllister.
Earlier today, he tweeted this:
Overheard the robber saying that they're coming back at 9pm tonight. Where's @KevinsMom_GS?!
Later, this:
Oh No! It's getting late. I need to protect my house against those robbers!
And most recently, this:
@BanditHarry_GS, @BanditMarv_GS Give up? Or R U thirsty for more?
So what the heck is going on here? And is Macaulay Culkin in any way involved?
Turns out the answer is no on the Culkin count.
At first it seemed like some creative, enterprising Twitter users were responsible. You know the sort of kids who will invent something technologically awesome, become insanely rich, then be selected as Time's Man of the Year because some media elites saw a really cool movie about then.
But it turns out that this whole endeavor -- which also involves Twitter users such as Kate McAllister, Bandit Marv and Old Man Marley, among others -- is actually an effort by the Geek Squad, the tech smarties often deployed by Best Buy, in honor of "Home Alone's" 10th anniversary.
You can follow the whole thing, with all the Tweets in one spot, via this account.
It's still amusing. But I must say that finding out Geek Squad is behind this makes me feel a little like Ralphie in "A Christmas Story," when he realizes his decoder pin was just a ploy to make him drink Ovaltine.
Hey, maybe someone should live-tweet that holiday classic ... Liz can set up an account as Scut_Farkus. I'll be @BumpusHounds.
