Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie voted top money-making stars of 2010

"The Tourist" may have landed in theaters with a resounding thud, but that didn't stop the movie's stars -- Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie -- from leading the box office charge this year. Depp and Jolie were reportedly responsible for more traffic to movie theaters than any other stars, according to Quigley Publishing, which conducts the annual poll.

Interesting results considering that between the two actors' 2010 releases, only "Alice in Wonderland" ranked in the year's top 10 list of highest-grossing films. With neither "The Tourist" nor "Salt" anywhere near the top, Jolie's dominance is a bit of a poser.

After the jump, the full top 10...

1. Johnny Depp ("The Tourist," "Alice in Wonderland")
2. Angelina Jolie ("The Tourist," "Salt")
3. Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man 2," "Due Date")
4. Matt Damon ("Green Zone," "Hereafter," "True Grit")
5. Steve Carell ("Dinner for Schmucks," "Date Night" and "Despicable Me")
6. Tom Hanks ("Toy Story 3")
7. Denzel Washington ("The Book of Eli," "Unstoppable")
8. Leonardo DiCaprio ("Inception," "Shutter Island")
9. George Clooney (The American")
10. Anne Hathaway ("Love and Other Drugs," "Valentine's Day")

Nowhere to be seen on the list: Jeff Bridges who likely put a fair number of butts in theater seats with "True Grit" and "Tron: Legacy." Also missing: James Franco, generator of deafening Oscar buzz for his performance in "127 Hours" (which again reminds us that the Academy recognition doesn't have much to do with box office returns), Robert Pattinson and/or Kristin Stewart -- stars of the ever popular "Twilight" saga -- and the Kraken, star of the year's 11th highest grossing film, "Clash of the Titans."

The annual survey of motion picture theater owners also cited Zach Galifianakis and Michelle Williams as "stars of tomorrow" ("one actor and one actress who they feel will be Top Money-Makers in the years to come"). Maybe one day they'll be lucky enough to star in a "Hangover" or "Brokeback Mountain."

Polls are not fact finding devices, meathead. Polls ask people what they think. To find fact, you need research of a scientific kind that provide empirical evidence--something that can be measured by agreed upon measures and tested. If the numbers support your assertion, that is one thing, but what people think is really not worth much--unless you have a paper you must print every day, then you can say anything.
