Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds split

By Liz Kelly

Scarlett Johannson and Ryan Reynolds -- aka GQ's Babe of the Year and People's Sexiest Man Alive -- have separated and plan to divorce.

In a joint statement released Tuesday, the couple wrote:

"After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

A source told Us magazine that the couple, married since 2008, separated about two weeks ago and that Johansson initiated the split.

"The big problem with their relationship is the distance," said Us's source. "They spent a lot of time apart when they are working... She's been unhappy for a while."

Back in March the couple's marriage was rumored to be in trouble because the pair was rarely seen together. But an "insider" told the New York Daily News at the time that it was merely tight schedules keeping the two apart:

"She's been doing up to eight shows a week on Broadway, and he's been shooting the 'Green Lantern' in New Orleans. It's been tough, but they're making it through just fine."

And in May's InStyle, Johansson said of her marriage: "I mean, you're married and suddenly you have your own family. There's a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You've got your home in that other person."

We'll update if/when more details are available.

I call dibs on Ryan. Okay, and ScarJo. Sorry, Dorkus.

(But seriously, bummer. Not a great week for celebrity relationships.)

Isn't "distance" or some variation, always the issue with celebrity couples? Why is it such a big surprise? And why don't they ever try to mitigate the "distance" factor? All marriages are about compromise and handling challenges, so why can't they do it?

This also seems to be a pattern with military marriages, which is sad but understandable. But on average these seem to last a lot longer than celebrity marriages, which is surprising because a) usually celebrities/spouses aren't risking their lives in war and b) they usually have more money to use toward creative ways to spend time with each other (eg. travel, second homes, etc.)

Sad, sad, sad. :(

There was no category for "Not At All Surprised", but that's where I am.

She was too young to get married.

I also wonder if, like many people, at first they were in lust & in love, but may not know how to be in it for the long haul, which is entirely different from the rosy glow of lust/honeymoon phase/first blush. Once the bloom's off the rose, many just rush to divorce instead of moving into the next phase of life together, which isn't nearly as exciting but is what makes it work for the long-term.

Here's hoping Scarlett learns it's OK to date -- especially if she truly doesn't believe in monogamy. Go with it, girl!

OK, off my soapbox now and back to the regularly scheduled snark.

Didn't we have doubts that they were ever actually married at all?

I was hoping they're procreate at least once to make some super-ridiculously good looking baby, but twas not to be. :-(

Not really surprised. Hard to feel married if you're never together

That RR/ScarJo kitchen pass exchange I negotiated with my wife is getting closer to paying off. Call me, Scarlett.

Of course, I get married and then ScarJo (yeah I said it) gets divorced. Life just isn't fair.

Lousy timing for Producer Paul.

There is a list of signs that a celeb marriage is teetering--renewal of wedding vows, getting matching/name-centric tattoos, protestations of undying love, etc. To this I would add the failure of the spouse to do a cameo on SNL when the other spouse is hosting. This happened a few weeks ago when ScarJo hosted, and RR did not appear, as he did when she hosted last year, and speculative eyebrows were raised.

The saddest part is that they both seem like pretty decent people, just from what one gleans from interviews and whatnot...I hope they find happiness.

Does anyone else recall reading that during ComiCon 2009 in San Diego, both of them were supposed to make public appearances, but Ryan was refusing while ScarJo was ready to, resulting in a huge argument between them? While there may have been extenuating circumstances, it sounded as though Ryan was being a big divo, while ScarJo has a stronger work ethic and sense of responsibility.

Dorkus, since the Mrs. has dibbs on Ryan, can't you two negotiate a Kitchen Pass for you and Miss Scarlett? I recommend some counseling at Williams Sonoma.
