Critics Choice Awards 2011: A recap

Natalie Portman at the Critics' Choice Awards. (AP) Most people have better things to do on a Friday night than sit at home and watch the Critics' Choice Awards on VH1. So for all of you who were out doing those better things, here's a minute-by-minute recap of what went down during the broadcast, followed by a list of all the winners. You're welcome....

Golden Globes: A list of ridiculous red carpet moments

Some people watch the Golden Globe Awards because they can't wait to see who wins. Others watch the Golden Globe pre-shows because they can't wait to see which celebrities (or, more likely, interviewers) make flagrant fools of themselves on live television. Yes, during the glam-cammed, inane-question-filled, product-placement-o-rama that is your typical red carpet show, there is usually at least one "did that just happen?" moment. As we prepare for more of those ahead of this Sunday's Globes -- which we'll discuss live in the blog starting that evening at 6 p.m. EST -- here's a rundown of five deliciously bizarre surprises from the Golden Globe red carpets of the recent past. 5. Brangelina snub Ryan Seacrest. At the 2009 Golden Globes, Hollywood's high-glamour couple refused to talk to the E! host, starting an online debate about whether they were rude or right to blow off the Man of 1,000 Media...

The New Zodiac Signs: Three stars who should welcome a realignment

Mel Gibson: Does a new sign = a new man? What's the deal with the new zodiac signs? Should you change your sign or not? It's all so dang confusing. But, since the matter is up for debate, we picked three celebs -- completely at random, of course -- for astrological makeovers. Since their current signs aren't working out so well, we argue, why not take advantage of this chance to adopt a new horoscope and the attendant qualities?...

'The Green Hornet': Was the bad buzz misleading?

Chou and Rogen, attempting to avoid a bomb in more ways than one. (Sony Pictures) "The Green Hornet" had all the potential to be one of the biggest superhero stinkers of all time. The project was in development for many years, and got passed from writer to writer and actor to actor until it finally got made. The release date for the Seth Rogen movie was moved six times, with the last switch taking it from a confidence-building December time slot to a "wow, this must belong in the trash heap" January date. And, perhaps most distressing of all, at Comic-Con last summer, hundreds of geek-movie fans -- essentially the flick's prime demographic -- walked out in the middle of a "Hornet" panel after watching some initial footage. Walked. Out. While Rogen was still talking. So it's no surprise that the advance buzz on this one was wretched. But...

Golden Globes hit with lawsuit from former publicist; Andy Samberg is Adam Sandler's son?

Could this man... (AP) ...be the son of this man? (AP) Some of the pop-culture stories on our radar this morning... A former publicist for the Golden Globes has filed a $2 million lawsuit against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, claiming that he was let go after insisting that members stop accepting money and other gifts in exchange for supporting certain films. Well, that should give Ricky Gervais fodder for at least one more joke during Sunday's ceremony. (L.A. Times) Andy Samberg to play Adam Sandler's son in the comedy "I Hate You, Dad." Because Sandler obviously fathered Samberg when he was 12. (The Wrap) Now that you know what Rooney Mara will look like in David Fincher's new version of "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," here's another thing to know: the upcoming movie totally changes the ending of the novel. (Cinematical) You've had your first peek at Andrew...

Golden Globes 2011: Predicting the lead acting winners

Natalie Portman, eyeing a potential win on Golden Globe Sunday. (Fox Searchlight) Yesterday I laid out my Golden Globe Award predictions in the screenplay, directing and supporting actor categories. Today we move on to the lead actor and actress categories in both the drama and musical/comedy categories. Will James Franco beat Colin Firth on Sunday night? Does any actress stand a chance against Natalie Portman's performance in "Black Swan"? Can Johnny Depp in "Alice in Wonderland" prevail over ... um ... Johnny Depp in "The Tourist"? Technically I don't have the real answers. But that certainly didn't stop me from making the following educated guesses. And it shouldn't stop you either; polls that allow readers to make their own predictions follow this latest round of prognostication....

'Big Love' returns to TV on the worst night ever

Sister wives: Ginnifer Goodwin, left, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Chloe Sevigny. I'm not sure what HBO was thinking, but the pay cable network will launch the fifth and final season of "Big Love" on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. Just in time for, umm, The Golden Globes which will be well underway on NBC. Maybe HBO execs thought there wouldn't be much overlap between the Globes-watching audience and fans of the sorta-satirical polygamous drama. Although last season ended with (as per usual) a cliffhanger -- Bill publicly outed himself as a polygamist after winning an election to the Utah State Senate -- I'm guessing Paxton and his trio of now-public wives (above) just ain't gonna outdraw the first major awards show of the season. So, fellow "Big Love" fans, set your DVRs now. Related: 'Big Love' ending...

Chet Hanks, son of Tom Hanks, really is serious about hip-hop: A Q&A

(Photo Courtesy of Chet Hanks) When a hip-hop remix recorded by Chet Hanks, otherwise known as the son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, circulated online yesterday, it prompted several questions. Is Chet Hanks -- pseudonym Chet Haze -- serious about pursuing a rap music career? Is he playing a funny online joke? And really, is it that surprising that the guy who did this would father a kid fascinated by rhymes? It turns out that Chet Hanks is very serious about his music, a fact that was confirmed when I spoke to him via telephone yesterday evening. Like all hip-hop artists, the 20-year-old conducted his interview straight outta the Northwestern University library. (Hey, give him points for studying.) Here's what he had to say about his rap dreams and his being the son of two famous parents....

Nicki Minaj, Tyler Perry earn NAACP Image nominations; Ricky Gervais lines up targets for Golden Globes

Tyler Perry, Image nominee. (AP) Some pop culture stories on our radar this morning... Nicki Minaj, Willow Smith and Tyler Perry all earn nominations for this year's NAACP's Image Awards. Perry earns a whopping 19 nods, yet somehow "Tyler Perry's Row 11" is completely ignored. (MTV.com) Ricky Gervais says he may target Charlie Sheen or Mel Gibson in his jokes as host of Sunday's Golden Globe Awards. Kind of assumed that, but nice to have confirmation. (The Hollywood Reporter) Kanye West apparently owns a watch with his own image on the face, allowing him to say "Stop -- Kanye time!" roughly every two minutes. (Popeater) Keep reading for Spider-Man movie news and a peek at the new "Battle: Los Angeles" trailer......

Rooney Mara: A closer look at her 'Dragon Tattoo' transformation

(AP) This was Rooney Mara at the Sundance Film Festival back in 2009. Got a fix on what she looked like there? Good. Pint-sized 'Jersey Shore'; Gaga on track to earn $100 million

(Twitter) And we thought "Jersey Shore" itself was indicative of the decline of Western civilization. That was before Jenni "JWOWW" Farley posted this photo -- of what appears to be a mini Snooki, Situation and JWOWW -- to her Twitter account. Peter Fonda finds dead body in car

Peter Fonda. (AP) Veteran actor Peter Fonda reportedly discovered a dead body in a car on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard. The actor -- best remembered for his role in "Easy Rider" and as son of screen legend Henry Fonda and brother of fellow actor Jane -- called 911 on Wednesday after spotting a car parked on the side of the road. TMZ reports that Fonda got out of his car to check the situation and found a man slumped in the front seat. Police, again according to TMZ, are labeling the death a suicide and say the body had been in the car for at least three days prior to its discovery by Captain America Fonda. Sources: AP, TMZ...

Stephanie Seymour's son: Picture scandal a 'malicious' attack

Stephanie Seymour and husband Peter Brant, who reconciled in September after months of what our own Reliable Source described as "nasty allegations" ahead of an expected divorce. (By Evan Agostini/AP) Last week, photos of bikini-clad former supermodel Stephanie Seymour frolicking on a beach with her son caused a medium-sized stir on the Web. In the pictures, Seymour and her 18-year-old son do indeed appear to be, well, closer than nature intended. At the time, though, we passed on posting them. Photos can be taken out of context and with no explanation to accompany them, it just seemed like a cheap shot. But now that Seymour's son, Peter Brant II, has addressed the kerfuffle on his Facebook fan page, we're comfortable passing along the pix for your judgment. (Why does this kid have a Facebook fan page? Because he is a "Designer, Art Collector, Socialite and Model, and the eldest...

Chet Hanks: The son of Tom Hanks is an aspiring rapper. Either that or he's kidding.

Tom Hanks has a son named Colin. But, as noted by Gawker, he also has one named Chet whose fame is rapidly rising online thanks to the release of his new rap song, a riff on both "Black and Yellow" and a Northwestern University-tribute track entitled "White & Purple." Yes, you read that right. Tom Hanks has a son who is a Northwestern University student and an aspiring hip-hop artist. Some other fun facts about Chet Hanks: 1. His professional rap name is Chet Haze. 2. His film credits include roles in the movies "Bratz" and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." Surely you remember him from that 2008 summer blockbuster as Student in Library. 3. His Twitter feed reads like a toned-down version of Kanye West's. It's unclear whether that's intentional. 4. According to his Facebook page, his motto in life is: "Keep on Hating,...

Anne Hathaway: Batman bound? (AP) A few of the pop culture-related stories on our radar this morning... Several actresses -- including Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Biel -- are reportedly vying for two key female roles in Christopher Nolan's next Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises." The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog reports that Kate Mara of "127 Hours" (and the sister of Rooney Mara) and British actress Charlotte Riley (fiancee of Tom Hardy) also are reportedly in contention, and Naomi Watts could be, too. Edward Furlong arrested

Edward Furlong at Monday's Hollywood premiere of "The Green Hornet," a day before his arrest. (Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images) Edward Furlong -- who can be seen onscreen in this week's "The Green Hornet" -- was reportedly arrested Tuesday for violating a restraining order against his wife. According to The Hollywood Reporter and TMZ, Furlong, 33, was required to stay 100 yards away from his estranged wife, Rachael Kneeland, per an order she obtained last year. While in court Tuesday for a progress hearing, an attorney revealed that Furlong allegedly violated that order (and his probation) last month, which led to his arrest. He was subsequently released on bail. The arrest is particularly poorly timed since "The Green Hornet," the first major studio movie for Furlong since 1999's "Detroit Rock City," opens Friday. The actor, who has struggled in the past with substance abuse, has a small role in the vigilante-justice...

Daniel Craig will return as James Bond

Daniel Craig, back as Bond and (possibly) in a bathing suit. (AP) It's official: Daniel Craig will reprise his role as James Bond in the long-delayed third installment in the rebooted 007 franchise. The Wrap reports that MGM -- whose financial troubles had put the project on hold -- and EON Productions made the announcement today. As previously rumored, Sam Mendes will direct; the movie is slated for a Nov. 9, 2012 release date. The next natural question, other than how quickly can writers Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan bang out a screenplay: who should the new Bond babe (or babes) be? Rosamund Pike, even though she was technically in "Die Another Day" already? Minka Kelly? Sofia Vergera? Speak now while the script is still being tweaked. Source: The Wrap...

MTV's 'Skins': Too hot for American TV?

Back in 2009, when Jen reviewed the DVD release of the British teen drama "Skins," she wrote that the show, "makes 'controversial' American adolescent fare such as 'Gossip Girl' or the new '90210' look like 'Little House on the Prairie.'" Of course that was before MTV launched its new flagship series, "Jersey Shore," a non-fictional close-up of young people (though, in this case all of legal drinking age) drinking, clubbing, having lots of sex and talking about it ad nauseum. On Monday, MTV launches its own stateside adaptation of "Skins," which based on the preview clip below, will have parents of teens quaking in their Uggs:...

Want more pre-Oscar coverage? You got it.

The Oscar red carpet: something you'll be seeing even more of on TV this year. (AP) There's clearly a hunger in America for more red-carpet coverage prior to the Academy Awards ceremony. And thankfully, fellow citizens, ABC is satisfying that hunger. The Academy issued a press release Tuesday announcing that ABC's Oscars pre-show, normally a 30-minute affair, will be expanded this year to 90 minutes. Charlie Haykel and Juliane Hare, producers of the program, said in the press release: "In addition to having more time to talk to the biggest movie stars in the world, we'll be able to take the viewers behind the scenes before the biggest event in entertainment!" Yes, that exclamation point really is in the press release. Of course, with ABC's red carpet show now beginning at 7 p.m. EST, that means it will compete more directly with the work E!, Style Channel, TV Guide...

The new "Idol" crew on the cover of the latest EW. (Image courtesy of Entertainment Weekly) If the cover of the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly looks a little familiar, there's a reason. This week's issue -- which features "American Idol" team members Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Seacrest chilling in the back of what appears to be a limo -- looks similar to a certain September Rolling Stone magazine cover. See what I mean after the jump....

Gwyneth Paltrow at the Country Music Awards in November. (AP) "Country Strong" may not have captivated the attention of moviegoers over the weekend.
