James Van Der Beek introduces James Van Der Memes and emotes. A lot.

We have passed the cultural point where Internet memes are based on celebrities. Now the celebrities create the memes themselves.

The latest example: James Van Der Beek, who understands the online popularity of a certain image of him crying on "Dawson's Creek" and has decided to take things a step further. Hence, he has given us James Van Der Memes, a site devoted to animated gifs of the "Varsity Blues" star having emotional reactions that serve as potential, more handsome versions of emoticons. (Because why use a colon and an open parenthesis to indicate your depression when you can go with "mild Van Der Beek sadness," as captured above?)

Check out the Van Der Memes blog and, after the jump, the Funny or Die video in which the dude formerly known as Dawson Leery explains why he pursued this important Web initiative.

One thing is clear: after both this and Pacey-Con, the gauntlet has been thrown down. Katie Holmes, it's your move.
