Lea Michele to sing at Super Bowl

By Jen Chaney

Lea Michele will sing "America the Beautiful" during pre-game festivities ahead of this year's Super Bowl, E! Online reports today. You know, because "Glee" isn't getting enough promotion out of its much-hyped post-Super Bowl episode.

Whether you're a fan of Michele or not, I think we all agree that she will belt the amber waves of grain out of that song. In fact, she may hit notes that will only be rivaled by ... Christina Aguilera, who is slated to sing the National Anthem before the battle between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers gets underway.

Because this is America, dang it, where we like female singers whose vocal powers may blow out the speakers in family rooms from the Redwood Forest to the Gulf stream waters

Naturally, this news raises an obvious question, which in turn has prompted the poll below:

For Pete's sake. This is what is wrong with America -- why have one song when you can sing two? It's all about excess and finding ways to go (more) over-the-top.

Not to be rude, but isn't the National Anthem usually a stand-alone kinda song?

Fine. Don't listen. In that case, we might as well pull out all the stops then.

PRE-GAME: Lea Michele, "America the Beautiful"

PRE-KICKOFF: Christina Aguilera: "The Star Spangled Banner"

To which we might as well add (because the Super Bowl is too short a TV event):

FIRST PENALTY: Pink singing, "You're a Grand Old Flag"

FIRST FIELD GOAL: Aretha Franklin singing, "Yankee Doodle Dandy"

FIRST TOUCHDOWN: Barbra Striesand singing, "My Country 'Tis of Thee"

FIRST SACK: Mariah Carey singing, "Stars and Stripes Forever"

And for the SECOND of each....

Please don't give them any ideas td_in_baltimore. In the next year or 2 I expect that the Super Bowl Pregame show will start the Wednesday before the game.

Depending on what they're wearing, I might belt-off between Lea Michele and Christina Aguilera...

After she sings she better get out. Nasty Ben Roethlisberger is in the house and she's just his age!

Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey always sound to me like they throw in scales or some kind of vocal exercises in the middle of their songs. I find that annoying. Much prefer straight up old school style of Lea Michelle and Kristen chenowith.

Keep FOX away from the programming decisions, please. Next thing you know, the un-American Ruppert Murdoch will want to broadcast exclusively on MySpace and have Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly do the commentary!

byoolin1 said it all (and quite funnily, I must say!).... how can any straight guy choose between these 2 major hotties? I really don't care *what* they'll be singing ;)
