Oscars 2011: Five reasons the Academy Awards may be less predictable than usual

Sure, Oscar looks boring. But he may have some life in him this year. (AP) Every year, roughly one millisecond after the Academy Awards ceremony ends, the grumbling begins. The show was too long. The host wasn’t funny enough. The ceremony was boring. Honestly, the only thing more predictable than what happens during the Oscars is the post-telecast whineapalooza. But there’s reason to be optimistic about the potential for surprises during this year’s broadcast, which airs Feb. 27 at 8 p.m. on ABC. Specifically, five reasons. And here they are....

George Clooney: A work of art, for sure. But God's gift to women?

Not only is George Clooney one of People's sexiest men alive. He's also apparently God's gift to women. This according to a Cincinnati artist who painted a large outdoor mural depicting Clooney in a take-off of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel painting, the Creation of Man. Clooney is in Cincinnati shooting "The Ides of March" and local art gallery Studio Vertu recognized the man's presence in their city for what it is: their chance to get some attention. Either that, or the biggest thing to happen to Cincinnati since the tragic turkey drop of 1978. The gallery owner and muralist explain the work in the video below: Haven't had enough? Get the local news team's take on the story, complete with a peppy correspondent and silly hijinx. It's almost sa good as "Threat Level Midnight." Via Popeater...

'Threat Level Midnight' finally debuts on 'The Office'

"After three years of writing, one year of shooting, four years of reshooting and two years of editing, I have finally completed my movie, 'Threat Level Midnight.' " So said Michael Scott (Steve Carell) on Thursday's "The Office." And, yes, it was worth the wait. In case you missed it, settle in with a latte, a set of earbuds and a handy spreadsheet to hide your slackitude, and watch the entire episode online. Happy Friday:...

Kardashians make $65M in 2010; Prankster makes off with Paris Hilton's birthday cake

The Kardashians made $65 million in 2010. Says mom Kris of her daughters' ubiquity: "We'll take Kim in a bikini and put her on a beach towel. So you would be laying on a Kardashian at the pool." What time does happy hour start? David Arquette has stepped in to fill the void left by Michael Vick's "Oprah" cancellation. Oprah will interview Arquette next week and, we assume, talk about his split from Courteney Cox and a recent stint in rehab. Lady Gaga wears condom-inspired outfit for "GMA" appearance: Amanda Seyfried and Ryan Phillippe officially split. In related news, Amanda Seyfried and Ryan Phillippe were apparently dating. Denise Richards, who apparently has nothing better to do than accompany ex Charlie Sheen to New York so he can... umm... party, let it be known that she would enthusiastically sign on to the next season of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills." Andy...

Video: Paris Hilton shares her life plans with David Letterman

Paris Hilton, who just celebrated her 30th birthday by pretending she was one of the can-can dancers in a Baz Luhrmann film, appeared last night on the "Late Show With David Letterman" and, after prompting from Mr. Letterman, shared her life plans. Those plans? To "just continue doing my business and growing my empire and have kids." (When she said growing my empire, for some reason I immediately heard this music in my head.) She added that someday she'd like to have three or four children. When Letterman asked if she was currently having sex (Dave! Shame on you!), HIlton refrained from comment. But she did very happily show the talk show host how her new Paris Hilton app works. (Guess that app is part of the aforementioned continued empire growth.) Watch a condensed version of the interview below, if only to remind yourself on this Friday that, at 30,...

Britney Spears debuts 'Hold It Against Me' video/infomercial

In her latest video, Britney Spears arrives on earth -- an alien, we presume -- to spread the message of consumerism. Music videos -- at their most basic level -- are ads. Ads for the artists featured therein. Spears, in her just-released video for her new single "Hold It Against Me," has taken that concept one step beyond self-promotion and into the realm of product placement. Is she the first performer to push product? No. Think of the effect Run DMC had on Adidas back in the early '80s. But she does seem to be breaking ground with undisguised, un-subtle in-video brand cameos. Of course Brit's own perfume gets a money shot, but so does Make Up Forever (available at Sephora), dating site PlentyofFish.com and Sony. All of whom, we imagine, defrayed the costs of making an over-the-top music video with lots of pyrotechnic effects....

Sarah Jessica Parker can't help but wonder why anyone wants to make a 'Sex and the City' prequel

Sarah Jessica Parker, not cool with young Carrie. (Warner Bros.) Sarah Jessica Parker is anti-"Sex and the City" prequel. "I was like, Wha-a-a-a-t?'" she tells the Los Angeles Times of her reaction to online rumors about Blake Lively perhaps playing a 19-year-old version of Carrie Bradshaw. (For the record, according to our poll on this subject, Dakota Fanning might be an even more popular choice.) "I don't begrudge any 21-year-old the opportunity to tell their stories," Parker adds. "They prove to us on an everyday basis that they're interesting. Even their narcissism is interesting. Even their inertia is interesting. Even their tonal speech patterns are interesting. ... But I don't think we can pretend to go back. It's creating two histories. It's like, 'Oh, I didn't know that about Carrie Bradshaw.' " In addition to her tongue-in-cheek commentary about the 21-year-old set -- which totally reminds me of this...

Channing Tatum gets drunk, loses his cellphone and giggles like a girl in awesome GQ profile

Channing Tatum, drinking and tittering his way into our hearts. (GQ) Celebrity magazine profiles tend to veer in pretty predictable directions. Sometimes the writer cozies up on the source's sun porch, which provides the opportunity to poetically recount how dapples of golden sunlight played across the movie star's face just as she began to discuss her painful, highly public divorce. Other times a reporter gets to cruise down Sunset Blvd. while the star of the next big comic book flick sits behind the wheel of his souped-up Porsche. If things go well, the soon-to-be-cape-wearer will speed heavily and brake hard, allowing the reporter to use his driving style as a metaphor for his career. And then there are those profiles in which the excessively handsome source insists on camping in the desert, gets wasted, loses his cellphone and walks around wearing a Snuggie....

Rolling Stone wants us to know Justin Bieber's opinion on abortion, Korea and other stuff

I've asked my 16-year-old nephew about matters of import and, aside from the 98 percent of the time when he has absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, his pronouncements come off as ill-informed sanctimony tinged with a healthy dose of naiveté and a dash of parroting whatever his parents think. Which is why I would never sit my nephew down for an interview, ask him about stuff like health care and abortion and then publish those quotes here. Granted, my nephew is not Justin Bieber, so maybe Rolling Stone is absolutely right to have published the Bieb's musings on all of the above and more. Since he's got a lot of money and a trademark haircut, he's probably way more qualified than the average teenager. Somehow, we're thinking his publicist called in sick the day this interview was done and is now looking for work. Some choice quotes...

Jessica Alba pregnant with baby No. 2

Jessica Alba, re-upping on mommyhood. (AP) Jessica Alba and husband Cash Warren are expecting their second child. Alba announced the news earlier today on Facebook. "It's been a while since I've been on FB & I thought I'd drop by to let you all in on some exciting news>Honor is going to be a Big Sister!," the actress wrote on her Facebook page. "Cash and I are thrilled and wanted to share the news directly with you so you didn't hear about it somewhere else." Of course, if you don't "like" Alba on the social networking site or haven't checked Facebook lately, you're probably hearing about it here. Which qualifies as somewhere else. (Sorry, Jess.) Alba and Warren have a two-year-old daughter, Honor Marie Warren, who is referenced in the quote above. The pair married in 2008. While there is undoubtedly a dumb "Little Fockers" joke in here somewhere,...

Michael Lohan to blame for Lindsay's bogus Letterman booking

No top 10 for Lindsay Lohan. (AP) For a few fleeting hours, we thought Lindsay Lohan would emerge, Phoenix-like, on Thursday's "Late Show with David Letterman" to read a killer Top Ten List that would immediately restore her to A (okay, B) list stardom and kick off an image rehab that has been a long time coming. But, alas, it is not to be. Lohan herself tweeted that she had no knowledge of the booking and, Wednesday morning, Letterman's folks retracted an earlier release in which they'd touted her upcoming performance. So what happened? Michael Lohan. That's right. Lindsay's sometimes estranged dad tells TMZ that he was responsible for booking his daughter for the Letterman appearance. Not only that, but that Lilo was totally on board until her reps got wind of the plans and quickly shut them down. "Anything positive that I bring into her life," said pere...

'House's' Lisa Edelstein speaks up for 'Right to Choose'

"My opinion's no more important than anyone else's," says "House's" Lisa Edelstein, who is appearing in a new pro-choice ad for MoveOn. "It's just that I have the ability to have access to more ears when I speak because of my job." In the 30-second spot, Edelstein -- dressed in 1950s clothing -- walks tentatively down a hallway towards a door as, in a voiceover, she says, "Decades ago, women suffered through horrifying back-alley abortions. Or, they used dangerous methods when they had no other recourse. So when the Republican party launched an all-out assault on women's health, pushing bills to limit access to vital services, we had to ask: Why is the GOP trying to send women back ... to the back alley?" "The things going on in Congress are so about the fine print," said Edelstein in a Wednesday phone interview. "There are little changes in laws [being...

Liam Neeson opens up about losing wife Natasha Richardson

(Esquire) In the March issue of Esquire, Liam Neeson opens up to writer Tom Chiarella about his life since losing wife Natasha Richardson two years ago in a tragic skiing accident. The man is, understandably, sad and still somewhat lost. Despite his return to work immediately after her death, he says the loss still hits him when he least expects it. "It's just extraordinary," says Neeson, referring to the depth of his pain. The entire heartbreaking article is worth a read. But, we've included a few particlarly poignant excerpts after the jump......

Lady Gaga: I was in the egg for 72 hours

Lady Gaga has had a seismic effect on pop music. Well, let me rephrase: She's had a seismic effect on the image projected by pop music stars. Her outre influence has pushed former vamps into camp territory, with chanteuses from Rihanna to Katy Perry to Miley Cyrus ratcheting up the freak factor in a desperate bid to keep up. On Sunday, she topped even herself, arriving at the Grammys inside a kinda cool, but mostly icky egg-shaped vessel in which she claimed to be creatively incubating. She emerged just in time for her on-stage performance of Madonna's "Express Yourself" her new song, "Born This Way." On Tuesday, Gaga called in to Ryan Seacrest's radio show and shared the shocking, yet laughable (and slightly troubling) news that she had spent 72 hours confined in the man-made embryo. "I was in there for about 72 hours," Gaga told Seacrest. "And it...

Oscars 2011: Who will make a cameo appearance in the opening number?

We're less than two weeks from Oscar showtime. And that means the people behind the scenes are starting to leak tidbits to the media. Specifically, producer Bruce Cohen tells Entertainment Weekly that the closely guarded James Franco/Anne Hathaway opening number will include "a very exciting and special guest star or two." Naturally, that got our mental juices flowing. Who would be the perfect guest star -- or two -- to join our young Academy Awards hosts Feb. 27? Here are a few guesses, ranked on a scale from possible to totally never going to happen....

Britney Spears named ultimate gay icon

Correction: It turns out this blog item was based on a bogus news report. We knew it sounded to absurd to be true. Thank you for SFGN's Jason Parsley for the fact-checking. -- Feb. 23 ---- Britney Spears, icon. (Associated Press) The last time we checked, Britney Spears was not gay. Nor was she known for being particularly adored by the gay community. Yet in a poll by the Orange County Equality Project, Spears was named the "Greatest Gay Icon of All Time." Spears apparently beat President Obama and Cher to win the title. We can only conclude that Orange County, Calif., is home of a micro-saturation of gay BritBrit fans who are all extremely motivated voters. Either that or they thought they were voting for Lady Gaga. Billy Ray Cyrus: 'Hannah Montana' destroyed my life

Look out Michael Lohan, there's a new disgruntled celebri-dad in town and his name is Billy Ray Cyrus. In the latest issue of GQ, Cyrus opens up about his recent divorce, the whole Miley bong incident, why he's feeling increasingly estranged from his 18-year-old offspring and how "Hannah Montana" "destroyed" his life. (Hey, mine too! Or at least 30-second portions of my life that involved channel surfing and getting momentarily stuck on the Disney Channel.) Anyhow, Cyrus -- who once posed in a provocative Vanity Fair Annie Leibovitz spread with his then underage daughter -- says he didn't attend Miley's 18th birthday party because, "they were having it in a bar. It was wrong. It was for 21 year olds and up. Once again all them people, they all wanted me to fly out so that then when all the bad press came they could say, 'Daddy endorsed this...

Justin Bieber: The Grammy loss reaction videos

We've all had a day to process the news. But some Americans clearly are still reeling from the fact that Justin Bieber lost the best new artist Grammy to Esperanza Spalding. Take poor young Jonah in the YouTube video above. His Grammy grief was so extreme that Conan O'Brien shared the above clip during an interview with Bieber on his show last night. Jonah isn't the only weeping/outraged individual to respond to the Biebs Grammy snub on YouTube. There are a number of similar videos circulating, and I've highlighted a few of them here. Are these people genuinely reacting, or just acting? It's unclear in some cases. Either way, it's pretty fascinating to watch. Here's another little boy who can't stop crying during the Grammys and a parent who clearly can't stop filming:...

William Shatner crashes 'Conan' with dramatic reading of Rihanna's 'Umbrella'

William Shatner has built an alternate career -- one that parallels his mainstream TV success -- with unexpected dramatic readings and over-emoted interpretations of popular songs. BlogPost recently chronicled this phenom, one which, I must admit, has fascinated me since Shatner performed "Rocket Man" at the 1978 Science Fiction Film Awards. On Monday night the former Captain James Tiberius Kirk, and current star of CBS sitcom "S#*! My Dad Says," popped up on "Conan" to give Rihanna's "Umbrella" the Shatner treatment. Fans of Shatner kitsch will not be disappointed (look for him starting around the 4:10 mark):...

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson returning to WWE ... kind of

Can you smell what "The Rock" is cooking? It has the distinct odor of publicity stunt. The football player turned professional wrestler turned movie star made his first appearance in seven years on Monday night's "WWE Raw" to announce that he'll be hosting Wrestlemania 27. While that sentence makes about as much sense to me as "Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich," I'm assured by a WWE fan of my acquaintance that this is, indeed, big news. Johnson, who used his WWE popularity as a launching pad for a career making a string of meathead-does-good movies, later found success as "The Scorpion King" and in kid fare like "Race to Witch Mountain." He is also one of the most surprisingly funny "SNL" guest hosts, most recently making appearances as "The Rock" Obama....

Marion Cotillard joins cast of 'The Dark Knight Rises' -- Report

Marion Cotillard with her Oscar for 2007's "La Vie En Rose." (AP) Marion Cotillard, the French actress who is not Audrey Tatou, has reportedly been cast in Christopher Nolan's next Batman installment, "The Dark Knight Rises." According to French newspaper Le Parisien, Cotillard, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in the French film "La Vie en Rose," will add the second Batman sequel to her growing list of American movie credits -- a list that already includes "Public Enemies," "Nine" and Nolan's Oscar-nominated "Inception." A rep tells the Hollywood Reporter that Cotillard's casting is "in discussions, but nothing has been confirmed yet." The actress is pregnant with her first child and is due this spring. She would reportedly begin shooting in mid-June. Anne Hathaway is attached to play Catwoman, so Cotillard would presumably play Christian Bale's non-feline love interest. Christina Aguilera falls on Grammy stage

In case you missed last night's Grammy broadcast, well, suffice to say you missed a lot: Lady Gaga arriving in an egg, Katy Perry sharing footage of her wedding mid-performance and a rousing tribute to Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. A tribute that, as Jen noted last night, totally redeemed Christina Aguilera for her Super Bowl fumble. But, alas, XTina was unable to make it off the stage without something going awry. At the end of the performance, she took a slight tumble. Maybe the concentration required to get the lyrics to Franklin's "Ain't No Way" right left her vulnerable to motor control malfunctions. Miss it? Watch again without blinking. (After the jump, see the full performance...)...

Grammys 2011: The best, worst and weirdest dressed on the red carpet

Grammy's best dressed: Drake, Dianna Agron, Natasha Bedingfield, Nicole Kidman and Selena Gomez. (Reuters and Getty Images) | More red carpet photos A different set of rules apply to Grammy Awards red carpet fashion. Rockin' sometimes trumps elegance. Weirdness rules. And even the guys are willing to take chances they might not dare to attempt at the Oscars. But as is true of any red carpet, some people manage to work it better than others. Here are my picks for Grammys' best, worst and weirdest dressed. Why that third category? Because this is the Grammys, and those who get extra-freaky deserve special recognition. Grammys 2011: Esperanza Spalding wins best new artist award over Justin Bieber

In one of the bigger surprises so far of this year's Grammy Awards, Esperanza Spalding won the best new artist award, beating out better known names Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence + The Machine and Mumford and Sons. That's right, Spalding -- a 26-year-old jazz performer and bassist whose second solo album, "Chamber Music Society," was relased last year, and who is not the subject of a 3-D biopic currently playing in a multiplex near you -- beat out the Biebs. If you're a serious music (especially jazz) fan, this was a moment in which integrity triumphed over mass popularity. If you have Bieber fever, this was an injustice of the highest order, as evidenced by the predictable explosion of "Who the [bleep] is Esperanza Spalding and who does she think she is?" tweets that immediately dominated Twitter. Grammys 2011: Christina Aguilera officially redeems herself

Christina Aguilera belted the soul out of "Ain't No Way" as part of the tribute to Aretha Franklin that opened the Grammy Awards. A cursory check of the lyrics indicates that she did not screw up any key lines, as she did while performing the national anthem during last Sunday's Super Bowl. Of course, to be fair, the word ramparts does not appear in that Franklin classic, so that may have helped. So is she redeemed now? Can we all officially stop unnecessarily unloading our rage on Aguilera? Or wait, maybe this is a more appropriate time to ask some other, better questions. Like, was it kind of ridiculous to close the Franklin tribute with "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" or would "Freeway of Love" have been a goofier choice? Is it me, or does Aretha Franklin, who appeared via video at the end of the tribute, look...

BAFTAs 2011: All hail 'The King's Speech,' plus the rundown on more winners

Colin Firth and wife Livia Giuggioli on the red carpet, basking in the BAFTAs glow. (AP) "The King's Speech" was crowned best picture during the BAFTA Awards tonight in London, solidifying its position as the movie to beat at this year's Academy Awards. A film about a member of the royal family who overcomes adversity to unite the country at its darkest hour? Sounds like the sort of drama that should dominate when it comes time for members of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts to reward the finest cinematic work of the year. And that's exactly what it did. "The King's Speech" won seven BAFTAs -- best film; outstanding British film; best actor for Colin Firth, in his second consecutive BAFTA win (he got one last year for "A Single Man"); best supporting actor for Geoffrey Rush; best supporting actress for Helena Bonham Carter; best original...

BAFTAs 2011: Helena Bonham Carter and more winners from the ceremony

Expect this Brit to walk away with a BAFTA tonight. (AP) The Orange British Academy Film Awards, the British equivalent of the Oscars, is one of the last big movie shows before the Academy Awards on Feb. 27. In other words, it's another crucial opportunity to cement "The King's Speech" as the official front-runner for Best Picture. The ceremony is underway at London's Royal Opera House and the biggest winner of the night so far is Helena Bonham Carter, who just took the BAFTA for best supporting actress for "The King's Speech." (For the record, presumed Oscar front-runner Melissa Leo was not nominated.) That's a big win for "Speech" on a night when, thus far, the honors have been dominated by "Inception," winner for best sound, production design and visual effects. "The Social Network" has taken the prize for editing and "Speech" triumphed for original music. Expect to see...
