Britney Spears named ultimate gay icon

By Liz Kelly

Correction: It turns out this blog item was based on a bogus news report. We knew it sounded to absurd to be true. Thank you for SFGN's Jason Parsley for the fact-checking. -- Feb. 23

Britney Spears, icon. (Associated Press)

The last time we checked, Britney Spears was not gay. Nor was she known for being particularly adored by the gay community. Yet in a poll by the Orange County Equality Project, Spears was named the "Greatest Gay Icon of All Time."

Spears apparently beat President Obama and Cher to win the title.

We can only conclude that Orange County, Calif., is home of a micro-saturation of gay BritBrit fans who are all extremely motivated voters. Either that or they thought they were voting for Lady Gaga.

I was about to say, how in God's name did Lady Gaga not have a lock on this?

Dear Orange County Equality Project,

Can you have a re-do?

"Ultimate"? I do not think that word means what you think it means, Toronto Sun.

Clay Aiken? Ricky Martin? Anderson Cooper?! Britney should be an icon to noone but her own ignorance.

LOL at some of you guys responses. Gay men do like good looking women. I'm sorry Lady Gaga isn't very good looking. And why would any living gay man (especially the under 40 crowd) care about women that are over 65 or dead?

I'd also add, Britney personal struggles in her life probably give her some support from some of the gay community who usually aren't as mean spirited when people are going through tough times as most of America is (while saying that I understand most of Britney struggles were brought on by her personal choices).

Britney is more guilty pleasure/spectacle than substance but that doesn't mean she doesn't have gay fans or isn't liked in the gay community.

I thought Orange County's Fred Karger was the "Ultimate Gay Icon"? Vote for Fred instead: www.Fred

In related news, Ryan Secrest is considering a lawsuit against Britney to reclaim the title of top gay icon.

Hey, it coulda been worse: just be glad they didn't choose Miley Cyrus. Imagine how knicker-knotted Billy Ray would be THEN!

Good point, Nosy.

Kathy Griffin gets my vote for the ultimate gay icon. She could womp Brittany's ample bottom on Monday Night Raw. Jake Gylenhall still remains my ultimate fantasy male.

Who counted the votes? It must be Orange County, Florida and we know what happened the last time we left it up to Secretary of State Katherine Harris. She and Jeb conspired to make George Bush the President and the country spent eight years regretting it.

Britney *is* frequently the character of choice for hot, young female impersonators.

are you kidding?? haha, i'm surprised that this is such a surprise to you all! i'm not sure who the post's demographic is these days, or the target audience of your blog (i came across this via googlenewsfeed.), but this is common knowledge. britney has been a gay icon for my generation of queers for about all 12 years of her career. every boy who grew up with her during the formative yrs of middle school, high school, and college is now a young adult.

the largest and longest lasting britney spears fansites over the years have been run by gay males, e.g.,, and others. she's this generation's madonna/cher. i'm not going to go too in-depth into why here, since there's not much of an argument. i do agree that lady gaga is giving her a run for her money, but she's still relatively new. if she lasts for a few more years, then sure, maybe it'll be her. christina aguilera is also a contender.

both xtina and britney have been bashed and judged endlessly by the media for their sexual preferences (not for a gender, per se, but for the liberal expression of their sexualities). the hate that they get from it, and their determination to rise again each time, is what captured this generation's spirit, i think. their images are fierce, unapologetic, and full of attitude.

obviously, britney's fanbase has suffered since the conservatorship, but she still has a lot of supporters rooting for her.

You girls have been duped.
You relied on the Toronto Sun.
Who relied on a scammer.
And the leading LGBT weekly in Florida just exposed the whole poll is likely a total fraud.

And it took a gay South Florida weekly to expose it all:
