#prayforjustin to save us from a dull Friday afternoon

By Liz Kelly

We're sure that when it started, the trending Twitter hashtag #prayforjustin was legit. Or as legit as a trending hashtag can be. The 16-year-old wunderkind perhaps has a cold. It's also possible he's going for a checkup . . . or not. He did in fact hurt his knee back in November, but what's a few months when your demigod is in trouble?

But predictably, thankfully, the hashtag quickly devolved into an utter hate fest with people chiding Bieber fans (who probably totally heart Kenneth Cole shoes) for worrying about The Bieb when people are dying in Egypt.

There's a raging war in Egypt and people are dying but a teenage pop singer is a little unwell, so obviously we should #prayforjustin!less than a minute ago via web

And Australia...

#prayforjustin? he has a cold! my friend died on sunday morning, and Australia is in devastation. i think bieber is pretty well off tbh.less than a minute ago via web

Others seized the opportunity to find creative ways to end the set up "pray for justin":

#prayforjustin to hit pubery while he's out sick..less than a minute ago via Echofon

#prayforjustin to be hit by an elephant travelling at speedless than a minute ago via web

And, of course, there was plenty of garden variety snark:

#prayforjustin why? Is it his foot, a cold of breathing difficulty? Here's hoping its the worst, most painful, possible combo of all threeless than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

Thankfully, caitlin08teresa was on hand and able to put the whole Friday phenom into perspective for us:

the only reason #prayforjustin is trending is b/c everyone keeps tweeting it about how stupid it is!... cmon folksless than a minute ago via web

I am by no means a Belieber, but some of these are a little harsh. I don't want to speak for God, but I'm pretty sure he likes knowing that people are concerned for other people, whether they're protesters or pop stars.
