Mel Gibson enters no contest plea to battery

Gibson, now in court. (AP) Updated, 5:05 p.m. ET: Mel Gibson has entered the no contest plea and has been sentenced to 36 months of informal probation. A judge ordered that he must do a year of psychological and domestic violence counseling and 16 hours of community service, as well as pay a $400 domestic violence fine, in addition to other fines. Oksana Grigorieva, the alleged victim, waived her right to appear in court. Gibson calmly agreed to the terms of the plea and answered all the judge's questions. "I have a good grasp of everything my attorney has discussed," he said during the hearing. Gibson will perform his community service at Mending Kids International, a non-profit organization. Robyn Moore Gibson, Gibson's ex-wife, is the president of that organization. ----- Originally published at 4:35 p.m. EST Mel Gibson has just arrived at an L.A. courthouse to enter a plea...

'Already married' syndrome: The video montage

In honor of the release of the new movie adaptation of "Jane Eyre" -- which, as all good English majors know, involves a major reveal about Mr. Rochester's wife -- Vulture has put together this montage of classic "Wait, you're married?" moments from TV and film. Watching them all in a one-minute-and-40-second-long clip makes one realize how even the best uses of this narrative device -- "Up in the Air," "Casablanca" -- can seem cliche when rolled into a viral video. Also, for the record, I'd just like to point out that the clip of Scarlett Johansson and Bradley Cooper in "He's Just Not That Into You" shouldn't count because Johansson's character already knew Cooper's character was married. In that particular scene, she was merely angry because he just had sex with his wife (Jennifer Connelly) while Johansson was hiding in a bathroom. Yes, it is pathetic and sad that...

Japan's earthquake and tsunami impacts 'Twilight' set and Jimmy Kimmel

In the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, obviously our primary prayers and concern go out to the hundreds of average citizens whose lives were lost or impacted by this disaster. But this being Celebritology, we are also keeping tabs on the impact that the tragic event is having on figures from the entertainment realm. People reports that everyone on the set of "Twilight: Eclipse" -- including stars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner -- has been evacuated from the Vancouver Island beach area of British Columbia, where the film is currently being shot. No significant impact appears to have been felt there, but the move was made as a precautionary measure. Jimmy Kimmel also was evacuated from a French polynesian island earlier today, and tweeted it about it as it was happening. His most recent Twitter message simply says: "we are evacuating the island. dogspeed." Tsunami warnings...

'Super 8': The new trailer has been tweeted. And it's Spielberg-licious.

The new, full-length trailer for J.J. Abrams's "Super 8" has been disseminated via Twitter. As an homage to Steven Spielberg sci-fi, it's so Spielberg-esque, I think it just turned on my heartlight. Well, either its Spielbergness turned on my heartlight or Kyle Chandler did. Either way, check out the clip....

Police search Charlie Sheen's home; Miley Cyrus lashes out at paparazzo; Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel split

Charlie Sheen, restraining order-free. (AP) Los Angeles police searched Charlie Sheen's home last night for firearms that might have violated the terms of the restraining order filed against him by ex-wife Brooke Mueller. They found one gun, an antique, and a few bullets. In related news, Mueller and Sheen have reached an agreement that nullifies that restraining order and settles the custody issues involving their sons, but the details of said agreement were not revealed. Sheen tweeted his praise of the LAPD and later added, "50 cops in my home. they all left. I'm still here. WINNING? 24/7." (Associated Press) Miley Cyrus doesn't hesitate to let a paparazzo have it when he accidentally runs into her mom with his camera. (The Hollywood Gossip) Reps for Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake confirm that the couple has officially split. The stars of "Valentine's Day" and "The Social Network" have been dating...

Jon Cryer responds to Charlie Sheen, admits to being troll

Jon Cryer has finally responded to Charlie Sheen's assertion that he is both a turncoat and a troll by appearing on television and admitting that he's actually a troll. Granted, Cryer did this on Thursday's episode of "Conan," so the seriousness of his response is obviously questionable. Nevertheless, the first step to overcoming trollness is admitting that one has a troll problem. So kudos to you, Mr. Cryer....

Celebrity justice: Lindsay Lohan in court, Charlie Sheen files suit

Lindsay Lohan, not pleading. (AP) Lindsay Lohan made a brief appearance in an L.A. courtroom today, where she chose not to agree to a plea deal in the case of the $2,500 necklace she allegedly stole from a Venice, Calif., jewelry store. Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz gave the actress a bit more time to ponder the matter; he will hold a hearing on March 25, at which time she could still accept the offer that, according to an E! Online item, includes six months of prison time. If Lohan sticks with her plan not to plea, a preliminary hearing in the case will be held April 22. Or, to summarize more succinctly: Lohan came to court in another chic, body-hugging outfit and pretty much nothing happened as a result. Meanwhile, over in Charlie Sheen's corner of the celebrity justice world, he filed a $100 million lawsuit against Warner...

Trailer: Cameron Diaz in 'Bad Teacher'

Based on the new trailer for the summer comedy "Bad Teacher," Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake could be pretty funny together onscreen. That said, I still think the most entertaining part of this clip involves Jason Segel going off on a Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James rant. Just me? Or is Diaz doing a twist on the Jack-Black-in-"School-of-Rock" routine equally hilarious?...

Felicia 'Snoop' Pearson of 'The Wire' arrested

Felicia 'Snoop' Pearson: back in trouble with the law in real life. (Marvin Joseph/Washington Post) Felicia "Snoop" Pearson -- the young woman who was plucked off the Baltimore streets and cast as the ruthless assassin Snoop on HBO's "The Wire" -- was arrested early this morning as part of a massive drug bust in Baltimore. Pearson was taken into custody on a state warrant, according to the Baltimore Sun. This is not the first time Pearson, 30, has been in trouble with the law. At 14, she was convicted of second degree murder and released from prison after serving a six-and-a-half year sentence. And, according to the Sun, she also was arrested recently for refusing to testify in a murder trial. Ironically, it's her street cred that led to her being discovered and cast on "The Wire." Michael K. Williams, who played Omar, spotted her at a Baltimore club...

Five things Julianne Moore won't do in her role as Sarah Palin

Julianne Moore, otherwise known as Sarah Palin. (PRNewsFoto/P&G/Bounty) As reported this week, Julianne Moore will play the role of Sarah Palin in HBO's upcoming adaptation of the book "Game Change," about the 2008 presidential election. It's a provocative bit of casting, first and foremost because Moore is a fine actress, and it will be interesting to see how she brings Palin to life in a way that diverges from the comedic,Tina Fey template. But it's also intriguing because, in their careers at least, Moore and Palin seem like wildly different people. To prove that point, here's a list of five things that Moore has done on film or television in the past that, presumably, she won't be doing in the role of Palin....

Rob Lowe won't replace Charlie Sheen, and Sheen issues 'an apol' to Jon Cryer

Charlie Sheen, master of the apol. (AP) The latest on Charlie Sheen: Rob Lowe is not replacing him on "Two and a Half Men" because he's under a multi-year contract to remain on "Parks and Recreation." And that show is actually funny. (The Hollywood Reporter) Also, Charlie Sheen has issued "an apol" -- that's a half-apology, by the way -- to co-star Jon Cryer for calling him "a turncoat, a traitor and a troll" for not reaching out to Sheen. (Cryer's reps say the actor has contacted his "Two and Half Men" brother.) "I'll apologize to Jon right now," Sheen told an L.A. radio station during his "apol." "I was in a mood and I threw that out to somebody. I didn't know they – well I kinda knew they were gonna print it. Yeah, I knew they were gonna print it. I confuse myself ... It's a little...

Mel Gibson to plead no contest to battery

Mel Gibson, entering a plea. (Getty Images) Mel Gibson will plead no contest to battery in the case involving his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. People magazine reports that Gibson has struck a deal with L.A. prosecutors that will allow him to avoid jail time and, presumably, attempt to put the whole Grigorieva-tape-recorded-ranting affair behind him. He will appear in court Friday to enter the plea. "I know from almost 20 years as a criminal defense lawyer that sometimes justice can come for a client at too high a personal price," Blair Berk, Gibson's lawyer, said in a statement cited by People. "That is particularly so for Mel, whose right to due process can only be exercised in this case with an enormous media circus attached. Mel's priority throughout all of this has been that the best interests of his young daughter Lucia and the rest of his children be put...

'American Idol' contest: What would Simon say?

Surely you can say something as nasty as this guy. (Reuters) Some "American Idol" fans may be missing Simon Cowell this season. In fact, some may long for the acerbic British judge so much that they often find themselves talking like him just to compensate for his absence. If that's the case, you're in luck, because flinging Simon Cowell-esque commentary could make you a winner in the weekly Celebritology contest, "What Would Simon Say?" After watching Wednesday's and/or Thursday's episode of "Idol," airing at 8 EST on Fox, come back to this blog item and post a comment that assesses one of the contestants, using the sort of cutting, pithy phrases Cowell might have used. You have until midnight Friday to enter. (Read all the contest rules and regulations here.) Each week, I'll determine a winner, whose witty, judgmental and (most importantly) Simon Cowell-ish rhetoric will be featured in...

Kate Winslet's new hair look

Academy Award winner Kate Winslet has cut her hair short and colored it platinum blonde, as duly noted on the cover of British Vogue. Is this an Oscar-worthy look for Winslet? Or should she go back to the long and darker tresses she used to sport? For the record -- and it's important to go on the record on such earth-shattering matters -- I think she looks great. Mike Starr of Alice in Chains and 'Celebrity Rehab' is dead at the age of 44

Mike Starr, former bassist for the band Alice in Chains and one of the famous patients on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew," has died. The Associated Press reports that the body of Starr, 44, was discovered Tuesday in his Salt Lake City home. The cause of death has not been determined. Starr appeared on the third season of VH-1's "Celebrity Rehab" in an attempt to overcome a drug addiction. For several months, he appeared to have become sober but last month he was arrested in Salt Lake City for possession of a controlled substance. Pinsky, among many others, expressed condolences on Twitter, writing: "Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. Our prayers are with his family." Layne Staley, one-time frontman for Alice in Chains, died of a severe drug addiction in 2002. Starr expressed regret in interviews (including the one in the clip above) that he...

'Cars 2': Lightning McQueen meets James Bond

The trailer for "Cars 2" raises an important question: is this a Pixar movie, or a globe-trotting James Bond spy adventure? Or, perhaps, both? I can't decide. But maybe you can. Charlie Sheen: What he could learn from his character in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'

At this stage in the Charlie Sheen saga, there is a strong, strong temptation to note that he has officially turned into his memorably tweaked-out character from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." (For the record, this is not unlike the temptation to note that Randy Quaid has turned into Cousin Eddie from "National Lampoon's Vacation.") As you can see in the video above (which, warning, features some NSFW language), the similarities are all there. His character -- officially dubbed Boy in Police Station -- is decidedly high on something. He's the kind of guy who often winds up in trouble with the law. He's got an undeniably anti-authority, screw-you streak in him. I even found a certain irony in the fact that Jennifer Grey's Jeanie tells him she goes by two names -- Jean and, for reasons that remain hilariously puzzling, Shauna. Two goddesses for the price of one! But the...

Charlie Sheen responds to 'Two and a Half Men' firing by waving machete; Gwyneth Paltrow pursuing record deal

Charlie Sheen reacts to being fired from "Two and a Half Men" by waving machete from the top of a tall building and invoking the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. Well, that and his lawyer threatens to sue Warner Bros. and "Two and Half Men" co-creator Chuck Lorre; Lorre, meanwhile, has hired his own attorney in preparation for the legal battle. (TMZ; The Hollywood Reporter) In case anyone still cares, here's a portion of that Lindsay Lohan surveillance video footage we mentioned yesterday. Please contain your excitement. Gwyneth Paltrow, who returns to "Glee" tonight, is in talks to get her own record deal. We all saw this coming, didn't we? Ginnifer Goodwin is Snow White

Ginnifer Goodwin finds her "Once Upon a Time." (File photo) Ginnifer Goodwin has been cast in the buzzy ABC pilot “Once Upon a Time,” a fairy tale-style drama written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz of “Lost” fame. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goodwin wil play Snow White/Sister Mary Margaret Blanchard, which suggests her character may have a dual identity: one in reality and one in the show’s “fantasy land.”Goodwin certainly looks the part and seems like a strong choice. It also seems like a smart move for her; if the pilot actually turns into a series, it will keep Goodwin steadily working on TV after “Big Love” ends. This bit of Snow White news serves as the latest in an ongoing parade of fairy tale-related developments in Hollywood. Kristen Stewart has been rumored as the actress most likely to play Snow White in Universal’s upcoming film “Snow White...

Charlie Sheen officially fired from 'Two and a Half Men'

Charlie Sheen: fired. (AP) | More Sheen photos Charlie Sheen is done. Warner Bros. has officially fired him from "Two and a Half Men," booting him off the puzzlingly lucrative sitcom for good in a statement issued today. "After careful consideration, Warner Bros. Television has terminated Charlie Sheen’s services on Two and a Half Men effective immediately," the studio said in an e-mail, as reported by Vulture. TMZ also cites a letter sent by Warner Bros. to Sheen's lawyer, which states that Sheen's contract can be terminated because "There is ample evidence supporting Warner Bros. reasonable good faith opinion that Mr. Sheen has committed felony offenses involving moral turpitude (including but not limited to furnishing of cocaine to others as part of the self-destructive lifestyle he has described publicly) that have 'interfere[d] with his ability to fully and completely render all material services required' under the agreement." On Funny or Die, Katie Couric investigates the sillies

In a Funny or Die clip that will likely cause intense debate in newsrooms and Journalism 101 classes across the country, Katie Couric launches an investigation into whether or not it's possible to "shake your sillies out." She goes deep into the hallways of an elementary school in search of answers. And reporters will probably look deeply into their souls as a result, asking questions like: is it OK for a respected newswoman to appear in a Funny or Die clip? Is it appropriate for CBS News to use its branding on what is clearly a satirical viral video? Is CBS attempting to be both a beacon of journalistic integrity and The Onion? I don't have the answers, but I do have the video. Watch it below. Katie Couric Investigates the Sillies from Katie Couric...
