Romney and Religion

Peter Hauck

The fallout from the dustup over what Al Sharpton said or meant when he commented on Mitt Romney's Mormon faith has spread in a new direction: the practice of racial exclusion in the recent past by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Romney tries to get out in front. He says he "literally broke down" when his church finally allowed African-Americans to become priests. (Do you believe that?) And you'd think he'd know that trotting out "One on my best friends . . ." is always a surefire cringe-inducer.

You can watch Romney's response here.
