Giuliani Video is Up, Union Boss Explains Why

The International Association of Firefighters video criticizing Rudy Giuliani's leadership on and after 9/11 is now out (see below). A conversation this afternoon with IAFF president Howard A. Schaitberger paints a great picture of where groups like this may be headed during the 2008 campaign cycle (and why Channel '08 will be very busy through November 2008).

And there's a companion Web site, Rudy-Urbanlegend.com.

"Our production was really developed for our members, because it's Giuliani and his campaign out and around the country trying to sign up firefighters, trying to use them for their own political purposes, trying to use them in photo ops," Schaitberger says.

So why not educate members and the general public through TV and radio ads?

"We made a decision we're not going to use paid advertising venue to do this," Schaitberger says, emphasizing the campaign is primarily designed to educate union members. But, "I'm not trying to be naiive or coy about this: I want every voting citizen to have the opportunity to know our view of Giuliani," says Schaitberger. "We're going to do that using the Internet, we're going to do that using our members who have their own members who have their own contact lists out there."

Schaitberger also admits posting the IAFF's opinions online through sites like YouTube is a quicker, cheaper way.

"This is a much more efficient way to do it. It's a broader way to distribute it. And in turn, it's much easier for our members to forward it on to their friends, neighbors, contacts, and their communities," he says.

As for criticism from the Giuliani camp that the IAFF's video is a partisan smear campaign, Schaitberger says, "I'm not going to be disingenuous and suggest that every member of the IAFF is going to agree with our position. I will tell you that overwhelmingly we represent the troops on the ground. And overwhelmingly, our members support our decisions." He also points out that he believes roughly 45 percent of IAFF members are registered Republicans, while 30 to 45 percent are registered Democrats.

Over at The Fix, Chris Cillizza has whipped up an analysis on Giuliani's prebuttal of the IAFF video. Chris writes that it "reflects the post-Swift Boats, post-Macaca world of campaign politics. In previous campaigns, responding to a web-based video would have been considered poor form; it would have almost insured the video would get more attention than it might have gotten on its own.

"But, in the new viral world of politics, a link is a link. Giuliani's campaign knows that if the video catches on in the world of YouTube and Drudge it could get out of control very quickly. By seeking to discredit the messenger before the video even hits the Internet, the Giuliani campaign hopes it can deaden the impact before it has a chance to grow."

Amen. We'll wait and see how other campaign handle similar viral video attacks in the future.

"Amen. We'll wait and see how other campaign handle similar viral video attacks in the future." WHAT? It's interesting you're blithely snotty run-down of the IAFF's "viral video attack" omits whether or not the ad is TRUE. Jesus. Don't bother practising any actual journalism or anything. This must be that liberal media I'm always hearing so much about...

Anyone familiar with public employee unions and their never ending campaigns for tax increases to support their glutanous appitites for ever more wage and benefit increases will be familiar with their tactics of half truth, distortions and outright lies. Anyone with half a brain will siomply ignore these commercials.

Is something a "partisan smear" if it's true?

This article is one more example of the pathetic state of the media in this country.

Journalism? What's journalism?

your favorite common tator...

hey,

any one that says this is not Republican based is crazy. There is a certain kind of candidate that Washington INSIDERS want to see win.

Someone that is already part of the graft machine, or someone that they can control.

YOU will see the same pattern with Clinton, Obama, Edwards or anyone else that is not already aligned with the

Washington INSIDER WASHINGTON.

Someone like a MITT ROMNEY, that has been in lockstep with Herr Bushmeister...they know that they can feed him whatever they want to and he will shout:

Seig Heil!

Even McCain never really got it that he was never going to be next in line. The REPUBLICScamArtists...

don't want someone in charge that they can not control. They can't control Guilliani.

They would never tell him, that it is Republicscams....but anyone with the intelligence of a titmouse, can tell dats da facks...

Certainly it ain't Democrats, they don't do things like

Swiftboat, Make up B.S. about Iraq and invade them to steal their oil, or send an aide into the WhiteHouse to seduce Bill Clinton...it's more of a we don't care about the country F.U. Republicascam kinda thing...

doncha know?

THEY WANT SOMEONE THAT WILL KEEP "the illusion," "the story,"

that BushCO Inc. and others of the war profiteer kind, are fighting a war against terrorism...

they want theit B.S. Meister in charge of the WHITE HOUSE even if Rudy has to take a hit....

it really isn't about party...

it really is about who is runnnig washington d.c.

people that use terms like

liberals

are dumb as doorknobs.

they don't actually have the intelligence to work with issues as issues...

they use third grade tactics....

labeling is approximately equal to name calling

in a more sophisticated attack, it is called strawman, but really not much different than name calling.

In a circumstance like this, it's important to look at the facts. Stripping out the commentary in the video, the facts themselves seem clear.

With 343 dead on the scene, I think the firefighters have earned the right to be heard.

Posted by: lart from above | July 11, 2007 7:04 PM

What do you mean by "Amen" at the end of your piece?

Are you hoping the Giuliani campaign can deaden the impact of this video before it has a chance to grow?

Also, since when are facts partisan?

There's nothing wrong with expressing an opinion. Problems arise when you lie or misrepresent facts to support your opinion as certain groups and tv/radio personalitys have been known to do.

Christie Todd Whitman recently testified that New York City officials didn't want EPA workers at Ground Zero to wear hazmat suits due to the image problems it would present.

She also said in an interview with NBC she believed the illnesses killing first responders can be blamed on the city's lack of action.

Is she partisan too?

I know these issues may be beyond the scope of this blog but I believe giving equal weight to the Giuliani campaign's response to this video simpy isn't fair.

Rudy Guiliani ordered the operations command center to be placed in the lobby of a one of the towers while the tower was on fire above. The tower was built and designed to implode to minimize collateral damage that it could cause if it were to fall over. Placing the command center in the lobby of the burning tower sentenced all the firefighters working in or dispatched from that command center to a tragic fate. It's a shame that political appointees were managing the NYFD at its highest levels on 9/11. Those appointees who were determined to whip the firefighters union into shape in furtherance of Rudy's political future. Unfortunately neither the mayor or his cronies knew anything about how to manage a high-rise disaster. Research "Chief Driscoll" (who criticized the City's plans for handling high rise disasters at the time that the towers were built) to learn more.

This is probably the most powerful video I have ever watched from Youtube.

I never realized that when the order was given to evacuate the 2nd Tower, that the firefighters would have had time to evacuate... but yet 121 died due to Rudy's gross negligence on the issue of getting working radio's ... something he had almost 10 years to fix.

Rudy's statement in front of the 9/11 commission that all these 121 firefighters purposely ignored the order to evacuate is probably the most appalling, self-serving, statement I have ever heard from an elected official.

I hope every voter watches this video and comes to their own decision as to who the real heroes of 9/11 are.

Certainly FireFighters can object to Guiliani for whatever reason - it's a free world. Living in Manhattan though I'm not impressed with them. It was strictly a matter of low IQ and their constant stubborn stupidity why so many people got killed at the 9-11 WTC. Even now I often let them use my cellphone if they need to call the Hospital or Police. Is that Guiliani's fault - don't think so.

Posted by: ridagana | July 11, 2007 9:27 PM

Real nice ridagana, you don't address any point made in the film and proceed to blame the victims.

Would you like to piss on their graves while you're at it? Since it was certainly their "stubborn stupidity" that prevented them from receiving an evacuation order.

Also, to answer your last point - YES it is not only Giuliani's fault but Bloomberg's as well if New York's firefighters STILL do not have adequate communications gear and resort to borrowing your cell phone.

Amen? What's wrong with you? Is it not ok for unions to go on the internet with truth?

Posted by: Steve in Minneapolis | July 11, 2007 11:19 PM

I dare Ed O'keefe, who wrote this piece, to disprove the fact that Giuliani did not replace the incompatible radios used by FDNY and NYPD on September 11. You say the video was "dismissed as partisan"; oh yeah? By who? Giuliani campaign? Get to work and do what journalists do: Analyze. Is it true or is it not true?

Posted by: Andrew | July 11, 2007 11:38 PM

Guiliani is not the one who bailed out NYC, The Victim's families, or a great law enforcer!

In FACT, it is his arrogant attitude towards the illegal invasion and the declaration of NYC as a Sanctuary, that I want to enforce some LAW ON HIM!

President? Yeah, he can be President of Chasing the Soap! Throw him in JAIL for Aiding and Abbeting Criminal Acts!-at the Federal Level!

Posted by: RAT-The | July 11, 2007 11:44 PM

Why is the President of the Firefighters Union (voted in by a democratic vote by all of the members) called a "Union Boss" by the Washington Post?

Is President Bush a "Boss"? Is the President of a corporation called a CEO? Or a "Boss"? Why are Union leaders called "Bosses" and no one else?

Washington Post editors, care to explain?

Sorry, for the three postings. It was a mistake.

How can the FDNY attack a man of such impeccable credentials?

His Penn campaign mgr busted for bribery
His La campaign mgr confesses to prostitution
His SC campaign mgr arrested for distrib cocaine
His close friend and ex-NYC police chief doing time for public corruption
He's anti trad family, pro disposable wife (married 3x), pro abortion, gay rights advocate
He's anti sovereignty, pro amnesty, pro merger Can-USA-Mex, pro gov seizure of 100s thousands sq miles of land for largest private FOREIGN OWNED TOLL HIWAY in world
Tied to mob
No foreign policy experience

Such recommendations, and they dare complain about a few fallen comrades?
