McCain's Christmas Story

Let there be no doubt: There is a cross in John McCain's Christmas ad. (Some have suggested Mike Huckabee's holiday ad had a subtly placed cross in the background of his holiday message.) McCain's Christmas ad follows similar messages from several other candidates.

McCain tells a story about spending Christmas as a Vietnam POW. Arguably the most personal ad of the several holiday ads so far.

Call me a skeptic, but a part of me wonders if this ever happened, since this is the umpteenth ad drawing attention to McCain's time as a POW. Even if the cross in the dirt did happen, was it really in as quixotic a context as the music sets.

"Qvo Vadis" Released in 1951 depicts a very similar story of drawing a religious symbol in the sand to let someone know who they were. Even more interesting is the plot is about the persecution of Christians in Rome. In other memoirs by McCain, he has mentioned thinking and sharing stories of Cesar and the Romans during his captivity. Mere coincidence, or did someone borrow a scene from an old movie and pass it as a touching story and memory?! You decide
