Clinton Fact-Checks Obama

Just as the Obama campaign is circulating a video fact check of Hillary Clinton, the Clinton campaign has produced a similar video critical of Barack Obama's plans to withdraw U.S. service members from Iraq.

The video combines Obama's statements about troop withdrawals with the comments of his former foreign policy adviser Samantha Power, who told BBC News that the senator's plan to pull out all U.S. service members in 16 months is a "best case scenario."

More Incoming Fire For Clinton

As has now been conclusively established by video film and news photographs, Hillary Clinton did NOT come under sniper fire in Bosnia in March 1996 when she made a morale-boosting visit to U.S. troops enforcing the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement. But she is dodging plenty of bullets for her over-dramatic accounts of the trip.

Last week was not the first time that Clinton talked about sniper fire in Bosnia. She has provided various different versions of the incident along the campaign trail and in her autobiography, Living History. See, for example, this New York Times account of a campaign rally in Waco, Tex., on February 29, at which Clinton said that the welcoming ceremony had to be "moved inside" a Tuzla airport building "because of sniper fire." She made a similar statement in Dubuque, Iowa, back in December.

After my post last week examining Clinton's claims, I received messages and calls from several readers, providing very different accounts of the scene at Tuzla Air Force base that dank March morning. U.S. Air Force journalist Don Jackson was standing on the back of a flatbed pick-up truck filming the event when Clinton's plane touched down. Here is his account:

Mrs. Clinton arrived to a flight line full of well-wishers, both military and civilian, accompanied by her staff as well as comedian Sinbad and singer Sheryl Crow who were there to entertain troops. To set the record straight, there was no enemy fire, and no imminent danger. If there had been any danger, "well-wishers" would not have been allowed on the tarmac, much less allowing me to stand above everyone else on the back of a truck. And Sinbad and Sheryl Crow would've been running for their lives instead of taking the time to be interviewed by yours truly, on the tarmac. Mrs. Clinton's [claim] is a lie, plain and simple.
UPDATE Monday 2:15 P.M.

CBS News has now posted the full version of the truncated report by correspondent Sharyl Attkisson about the arrival ceremony in Tuzla that has been circulating on YouTube. You can see it below.

In a blog posting here, Attkisson shares her memories about the trip. She recalls that the pilots made a steep, very fast descent into Tuzla "to minimize exposure to hostile fire on the ground," but adds that there were "no known incidents of enemy fire on our aircraft." (This kind of landing is not the same as the "corkscrew landing" described by Clinton in some of her speeches. You can see an example of a corkscrew landing here.) Attkisson adds:

The mood upon first landing at the Tuzla airport was light. Children were there on the tarmac to greet the first lady, Chelsea was by her side, Bosnian dignitaries had gathered: It felt safe...To be sure, it was not the "safest" trip for a First Lady to take: there were serious risks in traveling to Bosnia, even for the President's wife under the vigilant protection of the U.S. military. It took some guts for her to go. But I don't recall, and did not note, any close calls on this trip with sniper fire or any other dangers.
Video clips of a smiling Clinton walking across the tarmac, and bending down to greet an eight-year-old Bosnian girl, are proliferating on YouTube. In some cases, the images have been juxtaposed with her harrowing account about running for cover "with our heads down." Here is one such effort that had received nearly 100,000 hits by Monday morning.

Sometimes, in politics, it is the trivial mistakes rather than the major policy blunders that can trip you up.

Don't forget she also LIED about NAFTA

The implosion of Sen. Clinton's campaign has now reached epic proportions.

Even if she doesn't care about the Democratic Party, or about winning in November, or about the American nation, she should quit this race to save her own reputation and dignity. She has now descended into fodder for late-night jokes which belie the intelligent, resourceful person she once was.

Please, Sen. Clinton, for the sake of us all and yourself, please go!

Wow, I can't believe Obama's Spiritual Advisor said those Terrible things about our Wonderful Nation.

I'm so hurt. And I am so confused about who said it, too. I mean I keep reading Wright's words in articles about Obama. It is almost like before the Iraq invasion. I was SURE Saddam had something to do with 9/11, because they kept talking about it and Iraq and Saddam and those Weapons of Mass Destruction, too. I was so scared.

Thank Goodness we know about Barack Obama and his Father now. What if we accidentally elected a President who said, "God Damn America?" That wouldn't make much sense, would it?

No wonder he tried to say his father went back to Kenya, he was here the whole time, teaching Barack to hate our very own precious little nation...our island home.

Well, that's good enough for me. I'll never vote for somebody who hates our homeland to be President of THE United States of America.

Yep, now I know what to think and all. PHEW, that was close, too... A crazy black man in the white house. Hide the white women!

I guess I'll be voting for the seething war mongering corporate puppet McCain in November. That way, I'll know he loves our country while he's dragging it into the dark ages, continuing the path of our super nation blessing president we are blessed with today.

I knew there was something "funny" about that Barack Obama anyway... I mean, his name is funny, isnt it?

:)

Ugly campaign, run by ugly people (in the soul), ugly lies, with nothing possible but an ugly end.

Dumb...Idiot, You are truly dumb! Your nom de plume suits you perfectly. Obama hardly knew his father, stupid. Rev Wright is not running for President. There are many things which God is punishing America for right now. One is the way we have treated blacks and other vulnerable groups. God says we should take special care of those who need protection, we don't in this country. We can say "God bless America" all we want, those are empty words in the ears of God, if we continue to mistreat the ones we should protect.

Dirty politics. I would never vote for Hillary. She's using susan's comments to say barack is lying, the same way she used wrights comments to say he is unpatriotic. she's disgusting.

Posted by: sjmarie | March 25, 2008 11:13 AM

So if Hillary is elected president, does she pass an amendment to the Constitution that says people are guilty by association alone. So then for the sake of argument if I think Howard Wolfson's a snake, then Hillary is one too. Wait, that doesn't help my argument.

In anycase, Samantha Power is an ADVISOR. She suggests policies. Barack makes the final decision. The only fact here is she disagrees with Barack's estimate.

I think Wise Owl has missed Dumb Manipulated American Idiot's sarcasm. They are both on the same page. Viva Obama

I think this Bosnia story is in a twisted way is good for Hillary. It reminds everyone that she was there she was everywhere. Been there done that. Hillary looks good she has done more for Americans as First Lady then Bush ever could of as President!
The BO, Rev. Wright story will go down in the history books as what not to say about race
For BO, to say" Typical White person" saying his grandma made him cringe, but not his pastor! It's going to be the infamous" the pastor disaster" This won't go away folks.

CLEAR, UNAMBIGUOUS and UNCERTAIN terms on how they plan to get out of IRAQ!!!! Yes Sen. Clinton, McCain and President Bush, told the American people that Iraq, had weapons of mass destruction, but there was none there.... Sen. Obama has made a clear plan to get American troops out of Iraq and if in 6 months or a Year from now, something disasterous happens in Iraq, I do not think any reasonable President which I think, Sen. Obama is going to be; is going to rely on the plan he made during the Campaigns.
Sen. Clinton is a Loser and like Ms. Power said a "Monster" who would do anything to see if she can win. Its really unfortunate she wants to change the debate about her "Credibility". There is nothing she says about herself or her oponent now, that we are going to believe any more.
She is not worth the pains. She is just a big Loser and should be shameful of herself.
